#JackedKirby - The Insectons!!! 💥💥💥 I feel like Jack’s work on Captain Victory is derided for no apparent reason... because the artwork is FIRE! I don’t even understand how people could look at the splash pages located throughout these 13 issues and ever say “nah man... he lost it by then”. I just don’t get it. 💥💥💥 Take this page from #Issue5 of the Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers (July of 1982) that features some invading Insectons (the main villains of the series) as they run up Captain Victory and his crew... look at the detail and design in each of those Insect Faces!!! Especially the main character of the page, who turns out to be the new “Regent” of the hive... kinda like the head Insecton in charge! He is amazing to look at. All the appendages and detail are just amazing! 💥💥💥 What I think Kirby does really well here is blue the line between insect & robot. As much as you know these are organic insect creatures you also get a very robotic vibe about their appearances... I think it’s the gear-like shapes and angles that do it, but they look like they are insect-robots. I wonder if this is where the Transformer creators got the idea for the INSECTICON line of insect robots that first appeared in 1986. #JackedKirby - The Giant Galactic Eye... 👁👁👁 Check out this massive space-scape from Jack on one of his last full series, Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers! What an insanely beautiful cosmic picture from the King... hard to believe that THIS is what people criticize as “Kirby being in decline!!!” 👁👁👁 This awesome double splash page comes from Captain Victory #Issue7 from September of 1982. We see Captain Victory and his fleet stumble upon this massive face in outer space... the Giant Galactic Eye!!! 👁👁👁 If this is how the story starts artistically, you can only imagine the insane designs that Kirby would employ when bringing the Wonder Warriors into this issue (check back in the feed, we did a whole post on those fantastically designed characters sometime ago- Mike). Kirby has his cosmic greatness hitting on all angles with this insane alien head... and the beautifully Kirby-Tech adorning the bottom two panels (from inside Cap’s ship!) are throwbacks to Kirby’s FF days!!! #JackedKirby - Back Covers are just as important as Front Covers to Jack!!! 💥💥💥 When Jack left Marvel & DC behind to explore the worlds of animation and Indy publishing one of the things he tried to do was break conventions and restrictions that had limited him as a creative for al those years in the industry. Publisher Pacific Comics couldn’t care less how wacky Kirby wanted to be... they had The King of Comics in house, and he was accompanied by industry titans like Neal Adams, Steve Ditko and others contributing back up stories for Captain Victory... a revolution was brewing! 💥💥💥 Take the back cover for Captain Victory #Issue6 from August of 1982. The title character, Captain Victory, suffers a catastrophic injury in battle and he is moments from death. But Jack had a plan for that... the Captain can take all his memories/mind and deposit into a new fresh body!!! As long as the procedure can be completed, Captain Victory would NEVER die! 💥💥💥 The back cover of the issue is used to show the mind switch surgery process. The Captain lies there with a special helmet, awaiting for his consciousness to be deposited into his new clone body! It’s another cover/splash page... and a beautiful one at that!!! There is also an example of Jack’s signature writing. His prose is very new age and cosmos orientated at times, and that is on display with this passage here!!! To think that Jack would put this much work and effort into the BACK of a comic is beyond me. #JackedKirby - Captain Victory & Kirby Tech... 💥💥💥 This one goes out to a duo of very cool dudes who often hit us up with great comments: @gumballheadthecat and @theartofskinner requested Captain Victory & Kirby Tech respectively... so I killed two birds with one stone!!! 💥💥💥 This unbelievable splash comes from #Issue3 of Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers that was published in March of 1982. It’s a double splash and it depicts the interior cargo hold of an accompanying ship traveling alongside the Captain and his crew. This ship is a dreadnaught named “Tiger” and it’s loaded with all kinds of high tech insane gadgetry... look at all those screens and magnificent Kirby technology adorning the walls!!! 💥💥💥 I think my favorite piece of tech in this page has to be the headset on the soldier on the lower right hand side (see pic 3 for a close up).
