You entered your classroom with a bright smile knowing this day was going to be a wonderful one since it was your birthday and you were meeting someone very dear to you after a long time.

"Y/N!!" You saw your best friend, Mark Lee, waving at you.

"Hey Mark!" You quickly made your way towards him and hugged him, a habit of yours.

"Happiest birthday to you!!" He excitedly wished you, hugging you again. "Thank you so much Mark!"

"I have a surprise planned for you," He said as you two settled down, "Let's meet near the gate after school, mhm?"

"Okay!" You replied with excitement filling your heart.

And soon the school ended so quickly that you didn't even notice it, but you were glad since you could finally see the suprise your best friend planned for you.

As soon as you two started walking Mark gently held your hand and intertwined your fingers, a habit of his. But this gesture always made you feel things.

Maybe it's because you had a crush on him ever since you two first met in your English class way back in high school. But you were just not able to confess your feelings for some reason and you were also scared on how he would react

It's better to have a good friendship than not having anything, right?

"Ok I want you to close your eyes as soon as we get closer to a particular door ok? I will let you know which door of course." Mark seemed nervous but you didn't want to ask him why.

You just nodded with a smile and a "okay!"

You two were in a museum and as soon as you two entered, one of the staff came towards Mark and asked you two to follow her.

And soon when you reached the door Mark asked you to close your eyes and held your hand to guide you inside.

And soon he made you stand in a particular place and asked you to open your eyes.

"Umm to be honest I prepared a whole ass essay about what I was going to say but.." Mark stopped to take a deep breath before talking again.

As you looked behind Mark you saw all the pictures you shared with Mark since high school hung up on the wall which was decorated beautifully.

You were just trying to process everything as Mark stood in front of you, nervous as ever.

"I had liked you ever since you first spoke to me when I was new to the school.. you made everything much easier for me ever since. I always liked your company…" Mark took both your hands in his as he continued, "Trust me I am literally shaking right now. I, myself am really unsure but… the only thing I am really sure about is how much I love you…"

"I know this might be all too sudden for you… and I would totally understand if you don't feel the same way towards me but…" Mark never looked at you in your eyes, and you were a little thankful otherwise he would have seen the happy tears forming in your eyes.

"I really love you, I really do. And for now I want you to be my girlfriend, and maybe my wife in future." Mark let out a small chuckle at his own words.

"Mark," you called him and that's when he finally looked at you in your eyes and concern filled his eyes as he saw your teary eyes, "I.. I too like you.. no i too love you.. a lot…" you confessed in between your sniffs.

Mark couldn't help but smile as he hugged you tightly and after a few seconds he pulled away but still held you in his arms, your hand still around his neck.

His eyes travelled between your eyes and lips, "May i?" He asked and you immediately nodded. And he leaned in closer to give you a soft gentle kiss on your lips.

You two could help but smile after you two pulled away. You both just stayed there with your foreheads pressed together gently.

He soon pulled out a small box from his pocket and you knew exactly what it was when he opened it.

It was a beautiful necklace, "May i?" He asked again before receiving a nod from you.

He went behind you and placed the necklace around your neck before locking it securely.

"I love you so much… I really do." Mark said as he leaned in for another kiss and you too kissed him with a huge smile on your face.

“Aaaand that’s a new record!” The coach screamed, excitement a bit too evident on his face as the school’s swim captain broke another of his own records in swimming. This time, he had completed the entire lap in less than a minute. Pretty impressive even for him. “Good job, boy! Work a little harder and soon no one will be able to beat you in the next competition.”

You snorted at that statement, wondering what the coach meant by 'working harder' because there was clearly no one who worked harder than Lee Jihoon.

He was, after all, your school’s swim team captain. And 'maybe' your crush.

He was everything that could be associated with the word perfect. Handsome, smart, athletic; a complete all in one package.

Okay, maybe you actually had a crush on him.

“You know, you shouldn’t stare that much. Kinda makes it obvious you know?”

The new voice broke you from your reverie (not that you were staring staring) and you turned to glare at your best friend. 

“I wasn’t staring at Jihoon.” You said, sticking out your tongue at him.

Choi San stuck mirrored your action, him too sticking out his tongue, before speaking again. “I never said who.”

You felt the heat rush up your cheeks but you weren’t going to go down. No way.

“There’s only one person in the pool you really didn’t need to mention who it was, San.”

He pouted at you, before plopping down beside you.

“Well at least, I still have you as my best friend then!” He said, wrapping an arm around you and drenching you wet.

“San! Dry yourself first!” 

"What's going on?"

"Mark!" You cried, glad that your friends had finally found you. "Please save me from San's harassment."

"How am I harassing you-"

"Get away from her." Seungmin groaned, pulling the other boy away from you. "She will catch a cold."

"No need to be so whipped for her." Chenle snickered, as three more boys came and stood with you all, causing Seungmin to nearly punch him as Vernon tried stopping the fight that was about to break out any second now. 

San, Mark, Seungmin, Chenle, Jisung, Vernon, Yeosang and Chan. Your entire best friend squad. Your swim buddies since you were seven. 

The nine of you had met quite late compared to most best friend au stories that you read. You guys had met in 4th grade through the swimming competition that your school had held. You of course got selected in the girls' swim team and your reputation as a swimmer grew till the point the eight of them decided to introduce themselves to you and before you knew it, you all were best friends. San was especially close to you.

The reason the two of you were closer to each other than the others was quite simple: you two were neighbours. But what kept this closeness going strong was the fact that he had stayed by your side all the time when you had broken your leg, preventing you from swimming ever again.

Sure, the other boys too had been by your side but unlike them, San pretty much started staying in your house itself, with you, just so that he could be by your side all the time like a faithful friend.. He had even given up swimming for a year so that you didn't feel left out.

But of course you managed to push him back to the sports he loved, after a lot of convincing that it wasn't fair for him and you would feel bad if he kept doing this.

You could hear the boys having a heated argument about something, something you didn't care for because your eyes were trained on Chan and Jihoon, who were walking towards the group.

They seemed to be in a deep conversation and you tried to hear what they were talking about, but it was hard with the odd twisting pain in your heart.

Was it because you liked him or was it because you felt the slight pang of guilt every time you saw him?

Lee Jihoon. 

A name you were very familiar with and a boy you knew too well.

And it wasn't because you had a crush on him or because he was definitely the cutest school sports captain ever and all the girls knew almost everything about him.

It was because he was your best friend.

Your ex best friend.

You had known Jihoon since time immemorial. The two of you practically slept in the same crib as babies.

And of course, the two of you even started learning how to swim together.

But while you made it to the school team, he didn't.

Getting selected to the school team had opened up a whole new life for you. There were new girl friends to talk to, new best friends to hang out with and most importantly of all, daily practices.

Practices took up so much of your time that you had to leave both the vocal and the guitar class that you and Jihoon attended together.

Also, being part of the school sports team uplifted your social status so much that you went from being the quiet girl who sat in the corner to one if the most popular girls in school in a very short period of time.

Maybe it was your extremely packed busy schedule, or maybe it was the fact you now had more fun friends to hang out with, but you barely had any time for your best friend.

The distance between the two of you grew slowly and slowly even though you hadn't meant it to. Jihoon was understanding at first, but soon even he had stopped trying to always be the one to initiate things.

Conversations dangled, eyes weren't met and awkward silence filled most of the little time you spent with each other. You were now one of the school athletes but he was still the lonely quiet kid everyone knew him to be, someone to be ignored. But it got even worse when silly bangers turned into heated arguments, sarcastic comments turned into insults and before you knew it, the thread had snapped.

Within a year of you joining the team you had lost your best friend, and while you were very bitter about it, there was nothing you could do.

After you had left the sport, you had hoped he would come and visit you. But he never did and your resentment grew.

It became worse when you found out that he had got selected to the school team the same season you had left and soon, he was the swim team's captain and the sports captain.

You knew how difficult swimming had been for him and to reach that level was a great achievement for him.

And it was a completely delusional thought, but a small part of you had hoped that he had joined the swim team to become friends with you again bit he never even bothered asking about you from your new friends, nor dud you ever get to meet him in school corridors.

When you finally had the courage to go swimming pools again, you saw him for the first time in years, practicing the butterfly stroke.

And it was like seeing a whole new person in front of you.  He was no longer the boy you knew. He was still Jihoon, sweet and quiet, and yet there was a confidence in him which you hadn't seen.

Before you knew it, you were heads over heels with him.

But since you didn't have the courage to talk to him anymore, you didn't tell anyone. And since no one in your current friend circle didn't know about your friendship with him, they didn't guess it either.

Except for one person.

You felt someone squeeze your shoulder and you turned to look at San, who was looking at you with an eyebrow raised.

Yes, of course. How could San not know? He could read you faster than any book he had read (which...wasn't much but it was still something).

"Hey."

Your head snapped to Chan's voice, as he and Jihoon stared at you, as though waiting for an answer.

"Um…" you said, trying not to look at him. "Did you ask me something?"

"Yeah." Chan said, rolling his eyes. "We were just talking about Jisoo. She got injured and can't swim in this season anymore so I suggested your name to Jihoon-"

"You what-"

"Oh that's wonderful!" San exclaimed,  jumping up and pulling you with him. The rest of the boys had stopped their conversation too to see what was going on. "Y/N would love to!"

"Just as I thought!" Chan remarked, grinning at you.

By the looks of it, everyone knew about your crush on Jihoon.

"No wait-"

"Bye Y/N! Jihoon will fill in the details for you!"

And before you knew it, you were in an empty swimming pool with your ex best friend and current crush.

Just how much more awkward could the day get?

"Hey." He said, sitting down beside you. "How are you?"

"I'm sorry." You burst out, looking at him with teary eyes.

"Sorry?" He asked, blinking at you and causing your heart to flutter. "Sorry for what?"

"I'm sorry for everything-"

"Hush. We don't talk about the past, okay? I should be the one who is sorry for not understanding you. I managed to get into the team but that's when you got out. And it was only then I realised how busy you were. I'm sorry."

You let out a breath you didn't know you were holding and felt as though a huge weight had been lifted from your shoulders.

You smiled genuinely at him.

"Good thing we both see sorry now."

Jihoon smiled, reaching out for your hand.

"So what do you say? Start again?"
