Crowdsourcing Cardassian Praise:

I’ve found so many resources on the Cardassian language for fics, but need to create some praising terms through combining word roots—curious if folks have ideas.

Imagine an instructor to a student, or a mentor to mentee. Or… things that would make an eager CMO blush. I’ve got some ideas; any crowd favorites?

vesstUl: good boy/child (general praise, can be derogatory if said to adult)

atveperrik’l: doing a good jobas one with lesser status (sexual connotations)

tasperenij: intelligence without limit (clever)

te’hrem’li : confident in one’s training/knowledge (‘cocky’, teasing tone)

luUkhos: one with obvious skill

levr’atir: ‘understander of anything’ (affectionate nickname)

hoslevZef’ec: fast learner (salacious wordplay for a “receptive” mind…

Haritvri’a: a water drinker, or in Terran, slut. Inspired by Orchidlocked's Garashir and Cardassian Headcannon filled Fics. Vyc&Tin Kardasi

Irc’ok: Moon Beam But because there was a word yet for moon, there was a suffix so I used that instead. Garak calls Julian his Moon Beam, which I also wanted to imply the Blind Moon. Julian is his beam from the Blind Moon and they were meant to be. Vyc&Tin Karadsi.

A’vre: Akin to ‘Bastard’. using Vyc&Tin’s word for filth.

Sicus’te’i: Enjoined (married partner). There was no word for it, so I took the base word and put -’i, like I’ve seen used in the send of ‘my’/’mine’ in another word by Vyc&Tin Kardasi

Ss’bar’alhi: Holder. Protector. Guardian. The one who holds another’s everything; one who is entrusted to protect their other half; they who was all and everything needed. Vyc&Tin Kardasi

E’zIra, e’zIra he’ kret ka re’mitkaderb men’harit. Ka a’vre!: Rough translation of ~I love you, I love you and need you like the flower who reaches for water. You bastard.

Mitka’wen— From mitka (Plant; used for Floral words such as Flower, Garden/er, and leaf) and wen (Small). Used here as a nickname akin to “ Small Flower”. Vyc&Tin Kardasi

Vit'ol — ejaculation/semen. Mix of seed (Vit) and life (Ol’lo, but only one part because it felt funny to me to add the whole term). Vyc&Tin Kardasi More To Be Added As Made

another thing about the universal translator/the cardassian language that is just so puzzling to me -- the word "legate"

legate is an english word for official ambassador, so seems pretty accurate for the cardassian legates and we can assume whatever their actual title is has been translated from kardasi right?

EXCEPT

we have the guls. english definitely has words for many types of low level officials, so standard should as well. but "gul" is left untranslated. assuming it's not because of lack of translatability, it's probably because it's a uniquely cardassian title. however, the same is also true of the legates.

so there's really only one possible explanation for UT translating one and not the other and it's that the cardassian language which is otherwise completely different from standard somehow independently evolved the exact same word as us which also happens to mean the exact same thing. wild

Hello everyone!

Some of you may have noticed that the old link to the Kardasi dictionary is no longer working. This is due to a security update on Drive that took place a few months ago. I didn't expect to need to do anything about it, but it seems there's a lot more interest in the dictionary than I expected!

So, please check the reblogs of this post for the updated link to the file. (Does tumblr still hate links? Or is this old workaround finally unnecessary?)

There’s a copper-plated gargoyle on the Promenade based on a fish that doesn’t exist.

It’s just below the sign with the stylized green turtle and third province of Bajor on a white background, a few shops down from Quark’s. The gargoyle is a copy of the neck and head of a găzht, a horrifying deep-sea fish from the most evil-tempered of Bajor’s oceans. According to legend, its skull is exposed even when the găzht is alive, and if the găzht swarm decides one of its members is behaving selfishly, they break the jaw horn from its skull, drive it away, and leave it to bleed out from the wound where the jaw horn was.

The thing is, găzht is a Cardassian word—it means “nightmare about being falsely accused of a crime”—and there is absolutely no evidence that it exists, at least on Bajor.

Bajor decided to keep the gargoyle because, after announcing that they were going to take it down, multiple shopowners around the Promenade objected. It’s a landmark of sorts, much more memorable and eye-catching than the sign above it, and people locate shops by saying “it’s two down from the gargoyle, but before the indigo light,” or “it’s three down from the găzht as you go towards the window with four triangles.”

from the Syansi/Kardasi dictionaries ive been adding to, a new phrase: itozeý maelin from itozeý = courageous + maelin = day hatch, dawn, morning

I imagine itozeý maelin [a courageous day-hatch] as a morning greeting suitable for a professional situation amongst peers of equal status, or for your friends in the office. Official use in some circumstances, more formal than for close friends.

Cardassian vocab help?

I've seen a lot of fic using terms of endearment in Kardasi, but I haven't been able to find translations for any of them. I might be missing a completely obvious source (it's entirely possible!) But I've checked the dictionary by tinsnip and Vyc, and still.. drawing blanks.

If anyone has a short list, or a link to something I'm missing, I'd be eternally grateful! 💕
