2021 Goals Game 42/56 (vs Columbus Blue Jackets)
Goal 1 - DeBrincat (powerplay) Goal 2 - Soderberg Goal 3 - Kalynuk (1st NHL career goal)* Goal 4 - Strome
*Milestone Master List Addition
Carl Soderberg: You know, being approachable isn’t that important, anyway. The Queen hasn’t smiled since the ’70s, and her birthdays are still very well attended.
MacDonald gave up his number so Soderberg could wear it again 🥺
Even though tonight's game didn't start off a good note for the Blackhawks, they were able to end it on a good note as they defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-3.
The Blackhawks did not have an ideal start in the first period as Michael Del Zotto and Cam Atkinson each scored goals to give the Blue Jackets a 2-0 lead.
However, after Coach Colliton used his timeout, the Hawks started turning things around. Alex DeBrincat cut the Blue Jackets' lead in half as he scored his 21st goal of the season on the power play (assisted by Calvin de Haan and Patrick Kane).
Just as the first period was coming to an end, Carl Soderberg scored his 7th goal of the season to tie up the game with assists by David Kampf and Ryan Carpenter.
In the 2nd period, rookie defenseman Wyatt Kalynuk scored his first NHL career goal (with assists by Pius Suter and Calvin de Haan (with his second point of the night); although there was a review and a coach's challenge from the Blue Jackets, Kalynuk's goal was declared to be a good one and the Blackhawks had a 3-2 lead.
Dylan Strome extended the Blackhawks' lead 4-2 as he scored his 8th goal of the season with assists by Kirby Dach and Alex DeBrincat (with his second point of the night).
Although the Blue Jackets cut the lead in half late in the third period with a goal by Patrik Laine, the Blackhawks continued to maintain their lead goal for the rest of the night.
When the Blackhawks bounce back after falling behind in their games, it's always exciting to watch. I don't know what Coach Colliton said during the Hawks' timeout in the 1st period, but apparently it worked because they definitely bounced back.
I was not thrilled the Blackhawks not only allowed the first goal of the game early on in the game, but two early goals from the Blue Jackets.
The Hawks need to make sure that they don't give up the first goal to the other team otherwise it'll give them early momentum that could potentially affect the outcome of the game for them.
I'm proud of Wyatt Kalynuk for scoring his first NHL career goal in tonight's game.
Although it took a while for the officials to declare it a good goal due to the review to see if the puck crossed the goal line and the coach's challenge from Columbus, it was nice to see the look on Kalynuk's face & the reaction from his teammates when it was declared a good goal. Wyatt Kalynuk is now the 6th rookie to score his first NHL career goal with the Blackhawks.
The Blackhawks also did a good job of taking advantage of the power play in the first period and didn't take too many penalties during the game which was nice to see.
After tonight's game, the Blackhawks will face the Blue Jackets again on Monday night as they end their two-game road series. I hope that the Hawks continue to keep up the good work and have a much better start to their game on Monday.
Until then, go Blackhawks!
