Casefiles - Fic Recs

Need just the right case to push you from UST to RST with your not so platonic work partner? Casefiles with slow burn MSR are my jam:

Early On:

Universal Invariants by @syntax6 - set over the course of a canon-parallel version of season 1 and early season 2 where Scully’s boyfriend Ethan who was cut from the pilot sticks around. One of my all time favorites.

Classic Era (or I don’t know when it’s set so I picture season 3):

This House Is Burning by Tesla - serial killer undercover case set at a ski resort.

Under Covers by skinfull- Scully goes undercover.

We’re Married Now by skinfull - married undercover with a cult.

Scary Stories by skinfull - investigating urban legends.

Homicidal Tendencies by Swikstr - crossover with Homicide: Life on the Street, but you don’t need to know that show. Scully/Other ending in MSR.

Cancer Arc Era:

The Common Fate of All Things Rare by @aloysiavirgata and Scarlet - post Never Again, filling in the blanks leading up to Momento Mori.

Omens by @lepus-arcticus - a cancer era classic.

On Untying the Endless Knot, and Other Improbable Things by secondsflat - post Demons, dealing with Mulder’s lingering flashbacks and tying back to the post lives from The Field Where I Died.

Gates of Hell by @alienqueequeg - post remission they work a cold case from Scully’s past.

Embers by @syntax6 - post remission as they explore a new relationship.

Laws of Motion by @syntax6 - sequel to Universal Invariants, set over the course of season 5.

Hey! I love your podcast and it's given me so many hours of fannish glee, thank you guys sooooo much! I was wondering, do you have an episode where you sort Anthea or discuss her character in (any level of) depth? I've been looking but haven't found anything and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that maybe I just missed it? Have a great weekend!

Unfortunately, it looks like we haven’t sorted Anthea - I would say due to lack of canon material, but that’s never stopped us before! haha

Casefile #1: The Stenza

Canon fire thunders from the bow of the ship, rolling across what was once a calm afternoon at sea. It’s a warning shot -- a gentle encouragement to the trade ship that this is one thief you’d rather not trifle with. She has 5 guns to your every one, after all. Of course, they always have to be stubborn none the less. A small attempt at returned fire has the trade ship being reeled in on grapples, inviting the rogue seamen onto its decks in a ravenous swarm, eager to take it’s riches by violent force. The small crew is overcome in short order, the rule is to limit death until they have a better idea of the cargo, though English ships rarely disappoint this far out.

He steps off the gang plank with a resounding thud, one hand at rest on his sword as he survey’s his new conquest -- could’ve been better, but he’ll take the easy work. He has a look of approval when his hands have already rounded up all the captives, kept kneeling in a neat group by the main mast. He casts a side glance to his quartermaster, “Survey her arms, begin loading whatever they’ve got.” The command’s met with a curt nod before a series of barked orders at other crewmen, leaving the captain to interview their new captives.

One older gentlemen clearly stands out at the conquered ship’s captain, and he approaches him, coming to rest before the bound man as he stared down his nose, piercing blue eyes giving a firm, pressing stare. “..What brings you to the west indies? You’re clearly not old salt for these waters..” The question is met with a scowl, but he seems to second guess talking back to the buccaneer, “You’ll find little. We’re only making passage to Jamaica -- a ferrying mission.” That doesn’t seem to sit well with the pirate, after a raised brow his jaw tenses with annoyance, “Ferrying whom?” 

There’s a pregnant pause, of which he has little patience for, and it lands a harsh kick to the captain’s ribs for it. He buckles under the pain, biting back a yelp before he squeezes the words out, “--A lord’s son.” 

The seems to perk up his spirits, lifting his gaze to the tied lot around them. It isn’t particularly hard to find the noble one in the crowd -- soft, pale skin untouched by blazing sun and the whipping winds of the sea. He approaches the man next, interest in his eyes as he comes to rest before him, “Just whose lord’s son am I blessed with the company of, hm? Don’t play quick either, I can just as easily raze your ship, with you on it.”

FYI it’s canon that Joe Hardy puts garlic on his BLTs if it’s there 😂😂 (and he made two of them).
