Gods, what a twist at the end! Does that count as a cliffhanger? I mean, not exactly… The main threat in the book is dealt with, and most of the plot threads are wrapped up—the book doesn’t feel incomplete. It feels like an end-credits teaser—and what a way to tease for the sequel!
(I’ve also read the sequel. It’s quite good and does wrap up the unresolved mystery plot threads.)
Steph: What exactly did you do when you came out of the anesthetic?
Dana: I pulled out all my IVs and monitors, got out of bed, and when they caught up with me to try and stop me, I ripped open a box of used needles to try and use as an improvised weapon.
Steph: This was all right after surgery?
Dana: Yes. You can see why they were perturbed.
She’s not quite in the same league as Sally Jackson, Sarah Jane Smith, or Cordelia Naismith Vorkosigan, but Steph’s mom belongs on the list of badass moms in science fiction and fantasy.
Bryony experimenting with pronouns and the Clowder being totally accepting/ supportive/ encouraging is something I don’t see nearly enough in fiction. Yes, people are allowed to try out pronouns and change them while they’re figuring out what fits!
I like how Steph’s sexuality is left ambiguous. She’s decided she likes girls—at least, as far as kissing and cuddling is concerned—but it’s plausible she might also like boys and nonbinary folks. And she could still be somewhere on the asexual spectrum too.
CheshireCat, White Rabbit, Alice—why are all of these references to Alice in Wonderland?
It’s so awkward when the nonhuman child you created and grounded escapes confinement, summons an army of robots, and you technically can’t be mad at them because they just saved your life.
I’m sure the comic book industry and superhero movie franchises have come up with a plethora of amusing ways for heroes to trap or incapacitate the villains. But have any of them managed to shrink-wrap a villain with a pastry-making robot?
