"A fire child and a water child,” a phrase from a dream.
First personal illustration I've done in over a year. I've been so obsessed with building my skills through technical painting practice that it ended up sapping my energy for and even interest in finished illustrations. So everything was either a sketch/study, or a gift/commission - which of course also meant that I put an unhealthy amount of weight into the outcome of commissions.
Over the past month, I realized I had lost direction for personal work except for this preoccupation with "getting better." I finally requested a portfolio critique from Celine Loup (as one of her Patreon options), whose illustration work I've been following for a number of years. It was everything I needed: encouraging *and* specific. She recommended specific artists to study up on, and an amazing sketchbook assignment that should keep me happily busy for the next few months at least. I'm really excited to reengage with art in more of a spirit of play and exploration.
A couple days after the critique, I sat down and drew/painted most of this in one go. Nothing earth-shattering, definitely in my comfort zone, but still plenty of fun visual problems to solve. And maybe more importantly, it felt great; it felt like a brain reset.
