Cersei was never a villain. She was just a victim of circumstance and a hero to her own story. From the very beginning, every single character hated Cersei, treated her like shit, and made the fans think that they have to hate her as well. But, what has she really done to deserve all this hate from the beginning?

Nothing. Characters hating Cersei, was a way to make the fans hate Cersei. Sure, she was a bitch, but is that really reason to hate someone and claim that they are the biggest villain of the show?

Sure, she had the sept blown up, but that was her only way to survive. And it wasn't even her original plan. It was her plan B.

Her original plan was to use trial by combat, but they manipulated her son into taking that right away from her. They wanted her dead, so they could control Tommen, and ultimately, be the true power of Westeros. It wasn't possible if Cersei was there. So they tried hard to get rid of her.

So, after her only chance of survival was taken away, she goes to plan B and uses wildfire.

So, the whole world screams that she's the mad queen and she's evil and insane. Like, really?

I think most of the characters would have done anything they could to get rid of the enemies that were trying to kill them. Robb Stark, Daenerys, Stannis, Arya, Etc. They all would have done what they could to survive. Just like Cersei.

So why is Cersei hated so much? Because she's bitchy? Or because the other popular characters have hated her for 8 seasons?

STOP looking at Cersei through OTHER CHARACTERS EYES, and look at her with YOUR OWN EYES!!

Unrelated to the last ask, but I am curious: what do you think about the fandom's reaction to Sansa? IIRC even GRRM was surprised by the amount of hatred for her naivety. Since Sansa is, next to Cersei and Jaime, my favorite character (and yours as well, I'm sure!) I'd like to read your thoughts on this extreme (and baffling) reaction. Many boast about loving 'relatable' characters in fiction - but isn't Sansa one of them? We all must have been naive at some point in our life (Hopefully?)

I’ve had issues with the fandom response to Sansa for a LONG, LONG time. You’re right; there’s a major tendency to hold Sansa’s naivety against her. Which is truly baffling when you consider that Sansa is a very, very young girl who went from an extremely sheltered childhood into a maelstrom of tragedy, betrayal, and abject horror. Yeah, Sansa does still cling to the hope that things might turn out all right (even despite evidence to the contrary), and this optimism can read as naive. But I read this tendency as a survival mechanism. Sansa is, above all else, a survivor. She doesn’t have that rigid Stark-like code of morality; she’ll do what she has to do to push through the difficult situations forced upon her. And if a bit of willful ignorance is what she needs to handle abuse, trauma, and systematic efforts to break her spirit, then who are we to hold that against her?

I say this a lot, because I think it’s incredibly true: Sansa and Jaime are bizarrely-similar characters on bizarrely-similar paths. They both started off as starry-eyed innocents, fully convinced that the world would accommodate their wishes and their goals with few complications. And then they both discovered at very early ages that things were NOT going to pan out that way. We still see Jaime grappling with the consequences of his past actions decades after the fact...and I imagine that Sansa will also need to cope with her own youthful missteps as she grows.

You make a good point about Sansa as a “relatable” character. Hell YES, she’s relatable. The problem (for some fandom folks, that is) seems to be that she forces people to look at aspects of themselves that they may prefer to avoid. Every one of us has been naive and materialistic and petty at some point...but these are always the traits that we judge most harshly in fictional characters. That’s why I think that, for fic writers, Sansa often becomes the “fandom bicycle”; people like to project any number of pairings/personality traits/behaviors onto her, often at the expense of the character that GRRM actually wrote.

Sorry that this got so long- I have SO MANY Sansa thoughts and feels!
