the name nika presumably is in reference to the japanese word nikoniko, which is the sfx/onomatopoeia generally used to represent smiling in japanese. i’ve also always assumed that the same word is the source for robin’s surname, nico, which is written the same way in japanese.

the sound effect used here for luffy’s smile reads as nika.

Is it just me or do Wano's chapter titles go especially hard?

Now the idea of the ‘drums of liberation’ has been brought up as far back as Skypeia (with that exact sound effect) during the party they had there (which...also featured Luffy silhouetted against the fire in a way very reminiscent of the way Nika was portrayed earlier in the arc) so the pieces are beginning to fall into place.

i just think it would be fucking hilarious if it was announced worldwide that luffy was dead and his bounty rescinded

his vivre card probably has burned up or is burning up by the end of the most recent chapter given he’s a corpse for a few moments there, meaning the fleet probably thinks he’s dying/dead, which, uh oh.

itd be hilarious if at that exact moment one of the fleet (probably bartholomew) is getting attacked by some marines and the marines see a vivre card burning up with bartholomew screaming about luffy, and that info is passed up thru chain of command. cp0 is hanging out nearby rn, so they could 100% confirm that yeah, luffy’s been killed, kaido won, officially he is actually dead.

skip to the end of the arc where luffy probably beats Kaido and the enel shock faces applying to every relevant character that didn’t know Luffy wasn’t actually dead. also holy fuck he beat Kaido??? cue the world gov scrambling to put out another, larger bounty on luffy’s head bc not only did he just beat an emperor (Kaido!!!) he fucking beat death??? holy shit???

it’s very unlikely to happen this way. it’d probably take way longer for the news to spread than it’ll take for luffy to beat Kaido’s butt. however, for comedic purposes, i reeeaaally hope this is how it plays out. bonus points if we get panels of allies who aren’t at Wano who refuse to believe luffy is dead and then their joy when yep, they were right, luffy’s still alive and kicking butt like usual (like Shanks)
