Sadly, ch135 strongly suggests they are not. If that chapter had been any more explicit in its depiction of what happened to them, the series would probably have to be rated for more "mature readers".

Okay but.

This is a narrative parallel if I’ve ever seen it. 

Gray’s even using the opposite hand and using magic one-handed, of all things. Even the line of action is mirrored, and just look at those closeups of Gray and Lyon being literal reversi colours of each other.

It’s the problem of Fairy Tail against Lamia Scale, and both situations are vaguely about Erza. Sherry encourages it both times, and Lucy gets unwillingly victimized in some minor way. And neither situations are properly solved, someone comes in to stop them with an offer of peace, because this isn’t time for infighting.

Mashima really looked at these two and said they were counterparts and he was going to stick with that damn theme. 

(Honestly, I’d say their ways of expressing affection for Juvia in the GMG arc is part of this long line of parallels, too.)
