Rambling about Fairies - Manga Chapter 99
This show has a constant switch of saviour and saved, most commonly between Erza and Natsu simply because they’re the ‘capable female knight’ and ‘main hero’ characters. To us, it goes without saying that Natsu ‘the main character’ Dragneel is the one that dives in to save her, but in-universe, it makes sense that the stronger Erza is the one that saves him instead.
Natsu is always trying to save his friends from themselves, hence his tendency to assure them before he deals with his own anger. Erza is always trying to save her friends at the risk of herself. It’s similar, and both are done out of love.
This complicated shift of who's truly the ‘saviour of the day’ is what really sells the Natsu and Erza dynamic to me. They are both capable when they’re to be counted on, they are both weak to their own things that the other can stand up against, and they are both selfless for their loved ones’ protection. They complement each other where they lack to fill in the roles of the two most reliable in the Team Natsu dynamics.
Does Sanji believe in a higher power?
Much is made of Luffy smiling at his supposed execution -- and rightfully so, it’s an important moment -- but I feel like the events leading up to said smile are often overlooked.
Luffy struggles. He begs (inefficiently) for his life. Once Zoro and Sanji arrive on scene he shouts at them to save him. He defiantly declares for all the world to hear that he’s gonna be king and does everything in his power to free himself.
It’s only when he exhausts all his options that he decides to smile. Until then, he’s fighting with everything he’s got.
