I would like to remind everyone that whenever you make a character you should be asking yourself does this character narratively need to be white and if not make them some other minority group
…wether or not this was a good thing. Like morality for Hanks character.
For those who don’t know, Hank McCoy aka Beast, broke the time stream. This was done to to bring the leader of the X-Men at that time, Cyclops, back to his senses after his militaristic and lacking regard for human and mutant life on the battlefield.
Now I know many people don’t like this decision on Hanks part because of what it lead to. Both for his character and for the rest of the x-men. (Which are extremely valid I might add…). But here’s the way I see it.
If someone cares about you, adores you, and worries about you enough to want to break the very aspect of TIME so that you get the help you need…I don’t think that’s wrong. That’s so rare nowadays for people to even consider going that mile with you! Many people who just stand by and watch you suffer, but to those who don’t God Bless you. Unfortunately, due to Hank’s actions and his mindset on this some people just see it for the action not the reason. (And when they do it’s more than what I’m saying here). But in Hank’s most purest form, even though he hated Scott for what he was doing he still loved him enough too do this. You can’t just hate someone without at first caring about it.
Even if it’s minimal.
Even the most basic forms of love have to start before immediately turning into something negative. For Hank and Scott, that’s the side I view this. He loved and worried for his friend so much that after trying to make him see reason in the present, he decided to give him a blast to the past…LITERALLY! Just to remind him of what they once was…even if he did have some alternative motives….
Now I just want to make it crystal clear, I AM NOT completely defending Hank here. I know what he did after was pretty shitty, especially to use this opportunity to TRY AND TAKE SCOTTS GIRL FROM HIM!
Even he knows what he did was wrong.
But before we raise our pitch forks and immediately deem this as a terrible action, I think it’s necessary to consider at least some side of Hank who did this just to save his friend. To save his community. But more importantly, to go back and understand what made them who they are today. To me, that’s pretty important for a man who is never deemed by society as this compassionate and while constantly reaching out to help others.
….but if anyone wants me to take the opposite approach on this then I’ll do that.
Anyway way! See ya later!
Oh! And before I go I just want to thank @positivelybeastly for their post on this character. Really helped me come to my own conclusions about this era of my favorite x-men character. Hopefully I do something like this for more than just Hank McCoy’s character. Now…Bye!
I am currently re-reading Kill Switch, and I'm just realizing how fucked up Will is over Damon and Emmy. The amount of power these two have over Will cannot be overstated. If there is anyone who can destroy him, it's them, and frankly, if he hadn't patched things up with Damon, I think he would have gone down a very dark road.
“Then do it,” he fired back. “Do it, because I have nothing to lose, D. Nothing.”
He gasped out the last, desperation suddenly rippling off of him, and it was familiar because I felt it too. I stared at him, his eyes searching mine.
“I can’t stop going down this road I’m on,” he nearly whispered, his eyes watering. “My family is done with me. Michael has Rika. Kai has banks. You were a lie.” He faltered, dropping his gaze. “She was a lie.”
She.
She was next. After I was done with Winter, I’d do it for him.
“I’m not afraid of you,” he said, even though his voice was laced with defeat. “I’m not afraid of anything anymore. If you don’t kill me, I’ll keep pushing you until you have to. And I will fuck you over any way I can.”
-- Kill Switch
Damon and Emory are the two people Will would do anything for, and they both left him and betrayed him, yet all the same, he still forgives them because of how much he loves them. It's freaking depressing. People really overlook how much he suffered.
I agree!
Will did suffer greatly, would do anything for Damon and Emmy, and is incredibly forgiving. For instance, even though Emory hadn't contacted him up to this point, knowing he hadn't discovered the letter yet, I fully believe if Emory had reached out he would have gone to her.
Will wanted and needed very few things to be happy. He wanted his friends and his girl. Damon was the one that understood him and accepted him. Emory was the girl he been in love with for a decade. Both had abandoned him, Emory claimed she never wanted him. Damon left, after trying to kill him, and he felt he couldn't match with Michael and Kai.
The feelings of worthlessness have taken down much greater people.
It's been discussed before, but I agree that Will would have died if Damon hadn't come back. No one was watching out for him, and Alex enabled him. Drugs would have eventually taken him out if nothing had improved. I still wouldn't put what Emory did in the same level as what Damon did. Emory acted out of necessity of survival, and Damon was selfish. Both were betrayal, nonetheless.
I do like when Will asked for an apology, Damon gave it to him - as horrible as it was. It was such a small thing on his part, but it made Will so happy.
I think where people get the most frustrated with the Willemmy conversation is that he acted like his suffering was as great as Emory's. They both went through a lot, but Emory had years of struggling alone to survive, while Will struggled to rely on his friends, but he had people - family and friends.
One of the reasons I like Willemmy is because they both legitimately suffered from something the other person did. They did hurt each other, to varying degrees. And they had to work to forgive each other and themselves for what had happened between them, but I legitimately believed their pain, which was not the same for the other couples.
Anyway. Thanks for the reminder of one of the only scenes where Emmy is mentioned in Kill Switch. It was a big eye-opener for me to how much Will still clung to her despite all that had happened. It was also nice to hear something good about Will for a change.
Another Yugioh opinion for today. Why the fuck was Serena not brought to Xyz? Is it because the writers for Arc V were drunk off their asses? Because they didn't know how to write good female characters? Because they were on the second to last arc and burnt out? Who knows. What I do know is that it was a wasted opportunity. Serena as a character has been defined by her realising how evil Academia is and breaking free of the brainwashing its inflicted on her and thousands of other Academia soldiers so why wasn't she in the Arc where that was a main plot point?!
Not only that Serena actually seeing Heartland is perfect potential for angst, she's litteraly seeing the results of everything she used to believe in which is effectively genocide. Her interacting with Sayaka, Kaito, Allen and Shun in this situation would be fascinating to watch we could of seen her interact with Edo and be a foil to him, both have been heavily brainwashed by Academia but Serena broke that conditioning while Edo struggles with it. Her helping him and other Academia soldiers change along with Yuya would be a lot more interesting then just him doing it, seriously though why did he get a sudden case of Jaden syndrome by the Xyz arc?!, but that's a topic for another day. In conclusion Serena was wasted and I hated that considering how much potential her character had especially in later arcs. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
Authors: Write 10 chapters about Jason going through the hurt and justified anger of Bruce replacing him and showcasing just how badly it affects him. Then have a few more chapters showing Bruce and Jason slowly reconciling.
Then for added tension and stretching out the storyline, let’s bring in some opposition or roadblocks, like say maybe Dick Grayson.
Let’s have him argue and fight against Bruce. And the poor parent is just a victim in all this who has to deal with his first ungrateful son throwing tantrums and wanting to be independent. So with all Bruce’s attention on Dick, there’s room for insecurity on Jason’s part and doesn’t that just add to the angst we all love.
Authors: Also completely ignores why Dick is angry in the first place. He has no justifiable reason obviously. Because we can’t have that. We can’t have it being written that Dick’s anger stems from Bruce never telling him he views him as his son, or not adopting him when he adopted another kid very quickly. Or worse, that he took away Robin even though no one made any effort to hide that fact.
Authors: We just spent half our fic writing about Jason’s feelings on losing Robin! His feelings of hurt and betrayal hinge on it being something he never anticipated! So we can’t write that Bruce has done this before, or it will seem really stupid. And that he did it to Favorite Son Golden Boy. It will seem as if Jason’s every action since returning was driven by emotion which WE CAN’T HAVE. Dick IS THE ONE WITH THE TEMPER RIGHT? DICK IS THE ONE WHO’S BEEN THROUGH THE EMOTIONAL WRINGER WITH BRUCE FOR YEARS AND YET HAS TRIED FORGIVING HIM OVER AND OVER AND HAS MADE A NAME FOR HIMSELF AND HAS POINTEDLY STATED THAT HE DOESN’T LIKE USING BRUCE AS AN EXCUSE FOR HIS MISTAKES.
IF WE BRING THAT CHARACTER IN THAN OUR WHOLE PLOT IS GONE.
If you can’t tell, I’m so done with this.
Why is this so hard for people? The amount of similarities between Jason and Dick is HUGE. Authors have SO MUCH to work with in terms of finding ways for them to get along and connect. Why is there such a need to oppose them?
I can’t expect everyone to enjoy reading what I read. I can definitely say a lot of people hate reading about abusive Bruce while I feel like his abuse needs to be recognized.
So if you want a character as a conflict, fine. I’m not going to read your fic just to complain about it. You write for whoever you want.
But if you write a character completely OOC, mention that he’s OOC. Or that this is an AU. Make it clear this isn’t the actual character.
Dick Grayson doesn’t have a temper. He gets angry like anyone else or when he’s being mind controlled.
Dick Grayson isn’t stuck up. He had parents before Bruce if you all bother to remember whenever you’re being judgmental about his circus upbringing.
Dick Grayson isn’t emotionally stupid. He didn’t raise Damian by constantly making him uncomfortable, or not backing off when it’s clear that he needs to, or randomly barging into his room when he’s not wanted. (The amount of times Dick does this to Jason in fics is unbelievable. A brick could see that Jason is at his limit and needs space.)
Dick Grayson loves his family. You can’t write him being the family person and emotional support and then try to shove down our throats that he doesn’t care about Jason. Do you really think he’d look at Jason and be no way I’m accepting this street kid, but look at Damian and think Yes. This assassin baby who treats Alfred like trash and has no problem killing and has very serious racist and sexist beliefs will make a perfect little brother.
Dick Grayson loves Jason. He didn’t break his moral code and kill Joker for kicks, all right? And he didn’t have nightmares about Jason out of misplaced guilt. HE LOVES JASON.
You can easily have all your angst with them loving each other and having issues with their methods of saving people. Or Pit influence. Jason can still be insecure and hate Dick, but sibling hate him. Like he’s so perfect what a jerk oh he’s asking for my help well fine I’ll help and I’m in no way happy about it. It isn’t like you created Robin and were my hero and now you’re asking for my help. I am very INCONVENIENCED BY THIS OKAY?
Jason would still have the premise of being accepted by the family and his feelings on being replaced would still be valid. Joker would be alive. All your things with Bruce are the same except Jason has a big brother to turn to who understands him. And isn’t that what we want?
Someone to understand and be there for Jason?
And it’s not like that solves the entire family drama. Canonically Tim never looked up to Jason and even if he did, the attempted killing is still a thing. Damian would hate him on principle and constantly anger him with comments about being the outcast or street urchin and just about being everything Jason would hate from rich people.
Cass wouldn’t like his methods. Steph would probably be cool honestly. They would chaotically get along.
Give me a Jason that doesn’t need an entire character to change for his emotions to be valid. Give me a Jason that has actual respect for Robin and for its creator, so that being replaced actually hurts because it meant so much to him. Give me a Jason with all his trauma, and all his emotions, and all his pain, and make him get the love and respect he deserves by growing and being his own hero and not by others’ nonexistent slights against him.
You’ve molded him into a character that depends upon others’ unjustness to him. And you think this makes him more interesting and loveable.
But in doing so you’re inadvertently admitting that without these invented abuses, Jason has no justification for his actions.
