Hey, I was just wondering: Where does it say that Tifa is the mayor's daughter? Wasn't her father the photographer?

What? No. The guy in white was the photographer and he’s seen lying near the inn when the town is in flames. Tifa’s dad is dressed in cowboy style and inside the reactor, which is when you get the whole cut scene stuff.

When Sephiroth is tormenting Cloud about his identity, he goes over to the figure lying on the ground to get the photograph from his pocket. We can see Cloud in his grunt uniform lying to the right in what actually happened. After this scene, Cloud goes to the reactor, sees Tifa crying over her dad’s body and then taking Sephiroth’s sword.

Brian Lockheart never implicitly states his title, however, during a cut off OG dialogue he says “I’m the town’s...” which leaves space for an important title. Mayor is the only one that fits in this space given the situation context.

Sometimes I wonder if my characters are over complicated identity wise and then I remember I’m a bisexual gal with ADHD and 1/4 puerto rican heritage instead of a thyroid.

Honestly what is this big trend of changing white characters into persons of color? I'm not saying it's racist, but eliminating an essential part of a character's identity just because you think that character trait is "over-represented" is kind of ridiculous. Like artistic interpretation is one thing, everyone has the right to interpret and alter a character if they wish to do so, but imagine if the situations were reversed. Imagine if some new director came in and made Storm from X-MEN white because they wanted to. It would be a huge deal, there would be a public outcry. If a character's race was misrepresented in the first place and a new director is choosing an actor of the correct race to play that character then that's great! I'm all for that! I just don't see the point in going, "Hm I'm gonna make this person black because there's too many whities in this movie."

What’s Your Character’s Identity?

Here’s a few questions for your character:

What’s your character racial and ethnic identity? What’s their nationality? What’s their sexual identity? What’s their gender identity? What’s their romantic identity? What’s their religious affiliation? Are they part of a club or organization?

What’s the political party? Are they patriotic? What is your character’s fears? What are their motivations? Does your character come from a large or small family? Are they married or single? What is your character biased against? Is your character driven by logic, love, fear, or by other things? What’s your character’s education level? Do they have a disability?

The answers to all of these questions do not have to be addressed in a story, but by answering these questions, you get to know your character better.

When you know your characters, you know how they’ll act. The better you know your characters, the better you know what actions they’ll make!
