The breakthrough
I was so happy Syfy decided to air "Apocalypse? Now?!" and "Ooops....I Did It Again" not only because that would’ve been one hell of an cliffhanger to stew on for a week but mostly because it made the character development much easier to track.
This has been a season of everyone split to their own quests. Kady searching for the Depository to save the hedges from Library mark - she succeeds but also brings Marina back on their heads. Eliot and Margo stuck in Fillory trying to save their friends and the land and getting into all kinds of time magic shenanigans - luckily also got time loop permanence. Penny being dragged to whatever was haunting Plum Chatwin and losing his powers - conveniently a Penny always loses powers that could save the day. And Alice and Julia each trying to find themselves and quest in honour of Quentin - Alice’s lead inward and towards letting go but Julia stumbled onto something truly Apocalyptic.
It pulled them all apart for the first few episodes but finally they all got together again because Julia’s quest turned out to be one of those of Apocalypse and all hands on board. Asking Moon to move out of Convergence is not a one person job (it’s three but you want to have enough back ups you won’t fail if some - looking at you Josh - fall asleep).
But a much as this was a quest that Julia picked for herself it didn’t just turned out to be group effort. It really turned out to be all about Eliot and Margo and their relationship. It has already been the main focus of this season with them working on saving Josh, Fen and the rest of their court from death in the past but it really shines here.
They’ve always made each other better and have been the support system for each other. They are perfectly in sync in some parts (snark and cocktails especially) perfectly complement each other weaknesses.
Margo is the doer. The one who makes the tough decisions and sacrifices (from Bacchus to her own throne) to get the shit done. But she doesn’t suffer fools or deal well when others don’t see it her way. She’d rather stab her way through.
Eliot is the sensitive one, the one who talks to people and finds out what they want. He’s a people person when he’s not drowning in his own sorrow (and alcohol) but he needs someone who pushes him. Someone who makes him stop hiding and actually do stuff and Margo never stops pushing (although others can do in a pinch - even voice in his head).
This is why they were so good as co-rulers (although Margo as High King and Eliot as support works better than other way around) and why they were so good at saving the day. We saw it when they found resolution to the time travel problem. And we saw it when they stopped all the Apocalypses. It was Margo who figured out where the time loop comes from but she was just too undiplomatic. It was Eliot’s ability to connect and find compromise that let him find the solution. It was so good he realised that letting bad stuff out and allowing others in can not only help him but let him help everyone else.
In the end they save Earth from two Apocalypses (magical and astronomical) and stop not only actual Karken and an evil billionaire but also Marina. Eliot convinced the whales. Margo stopped Marina. They both played to their strengths. And no one had to lose their Shade.
And as for Julia it turns out this wasn’t her real quest anyway. Obviously, Fillorian Magical Beast was giving out Fillory based quest. Too bad it was a sexist pig so Todd was chosen instead. Luckily for Fillory and everyone Todd has just enough sense to know he’s over his head (doesn’t even know for sure Fillory is real) and knows ex-goddess Julia is much better person to deal with it. And we are finally getting the new god for Fillory storyline.
