For checkertheflag as part of a lil art/fic trade, I’m sorry this took about 507 years and I hope you enjoy it! <3
You can find the super duper cute art version of this here :D
It’s almost 3am when Jenson is woken by the cat - or at least, he thinks it’s a cat before he realizes that it has an Australian accent. This, his sleep-addled brain informs him, would make absolutely no sense, because they are in Spain.
Still though, it sounds like a cat - the kind of screeches cats let out when they get in a cat fight over a pretty lady cat, or when they get their tail stuck in a door (not that Jenson has ever stuck a cat’s tail in a door, of course, he’s not cruel like that. Still, this kind of noises.)
The only unanswered question, then, is why would an Australian-sounding cat be screeching something that sounds remarkably like a badly buchered rendition of ABBA’s Fernando under his hotel room window in Spain.
And - oh.
His hotel room.
His hotel room in Spain that happens to be right next to Fernando’s… And an Australian accent.
It suddenly clicks as his brain comes back online.
Surely it can’t be, though… Or can it?
Mark had been at the party at the McLaren motorhome earlier - of course he’d been there. Fernando had left early, off to nurse his disappointment in his room while Jenson tried to party away his own, but Mark had stayed. He’d still been there when Jenson had called it a night sometime around midnight, when it had become clear that no amount of karaoke, however terrible, would do much to improve his mood.
And now…
A crackling noise, like pebbles hitting his window - then a muffled swear, cutting through the lyrics, and more pebbles, rattling against the window next to his.
“Mark?” The noise of a glass door being swung open. “What are you doing?”
Fernando’s voice is slightly muffled, his accent made thicker by sleep. He doesn’t get an answer - the screeching just gets marginally louder and a touch more dramatic. By the sound of it, Mark is trying for an opera version of the song now that he’s got an audience.
“Dios mio…” Fernando says from the balcony, halfway between amused and mortified, and Jenson bursts out laughing into his pillow.
This is Mark Webber, legitimately standing under Fernando’s balcony in the dead of the night and drunkenly serenading him with an ABBA love song, and… Jenson’s gossipometer had started tingling the second he’d known Fernando would be his new teammate, sure, but this is even better than anything he could have expected.
He’s still grinning as he makes his way towards the window, phone in hand to immortalize the moment.
Mark reaches the bit about the drums again when Jenson gets to the window, his arms flapping about so dramatically as he sings that he almost trips over his own feet. The white shirt he was wearing for the party is opened all the way down and apparently soaked, and he’s holding on to what looks like a bottle of champagne. On the picture Jenson snaps, he’s looking up at Fernando on the balcony, a hand over his heart and the cheesiest expression on his face, and Jenson makes a mental note to save it to his Blackmail Material folder later on.
(Not that he’s got a Blackmail Material folder, of course, he’s not cruel like that. Still, if he did have one, the picture would definitely be worthy of it.)
On the balcony, Fernando is desperately trying to look disapproving, even though there’s no one there to see him - or, well, there is, but Jenson isn’t about to come out of his hiding place in the curtains to inform him of that. The faint light coming from his room is enough to make the blush on his cheeks evident, and he can’t seem to keep his grin in check, no matter how much he tries to hide it behind his hand. He looks vaguely embarrassed, but mostly completely smitten - and then he bursts into an actual fit of giggles as Mark starts singing even louder for the last chorus.
“Mark, stop! You will wake up everyone!”
Mark seems perfectly willing to do just that though, because he merely carries on butchering the last chorus, arms flapping with renewed enthusiasm on the last line - and, really, there’s something to be said about his familiarity with the lyrics, if not his vocal talents. Such familiarity speaks of numerous listens rather than a single karaoke session, and the sudden image of Mark humming along to Fernando as he dusts the house almost has Jenson in tears.
On the balcony, Fernando is still looking down at his serenading Australian, who is now taking a deep bow - so deep, in fact, that he almost faceplants in the grass, only regaining his balance by using his bottle of champagne as support. The Spaniard shakes his head again at that, complete with the least convincing eye roll Jenson has ever been - as it turns out, looking disapproving with actual hearts in your eyes is a feat even the great Alonso cannot achieve.
He snaps another picture, because Fernando is looking kind of adorable, leaning on the barrier and looking at Mark with enough fondness to give Jenson a few cavities - maybe he’ll give them the photos in the morning instead of putting them in the Blackmail Material folder. Call him an old romantic, but the whole thing is rather endearing.
He finds it a lot less endearing five minutes later though, after Fernando has invited Mark up to his room - not that Mark is in any fit state to make Jenson hear things he’d rather not hear through the walls, thank God for small mercies, but he’s not entirely sure that having to try and talk the idiot out of actually scaling the wall to get to Fernando’s balcony, rather than taking the stairs like an actual person, is in any way preferable.
(It does get him a Blackmail Material folder worthy video though, and he’s definitely holding on to that one.)

I HAVE BEEN CALLED IN TO BE NICE and be nice I shall! :D
thepagemistress is an all-around A+++++ human being who deserves all the good things in life. Like, ALL of them. Also my official partner in writing crime who is always there to listen to my ridiculous ideas and whose support I'm eternally grateful for :'3 Also 200% totally responsible for my decent into Rolipe madness (and I am forever thankful for that too <3)
checkertheflag aka Nurburgring Queen and Master of the Art, Selfie Emperess and The One With The Best Family Stories, may her days be blessed and her pony be rich \o/ Such a wonderful artist who will draw the silliest things for you if you ask nicely (*cough*François-in-drag*cough*) and who makes me laugh a lot with her tales from the 'Ring and just generally a super cool person! :D
Keira (did you change your url? the last one I had in mind doesn't seem to work anymore :'3) is another great great great person to talk to about pretty much anything and who shares my neverending love of terrible sheep puns and that's just beautiful \o/
silverlynxcat my Launt bro who writes A+++ fics and who keeps bravely fighting for the survival of the Rush fandom, and she's also great to talk to and super nice and generally very cool :D
marussiaaa my #1 partner in French Stew crime in the good old days omg and I'm still laughing/crying at some of the headcanons we discussed like 6 months on, that's how good her headcanons are. Also her writing is a thing of beauty.
stelleappese has a knack for writing fics that make me flail wildly and cry a little bit and ship people I didn't mean to ship, like it doesn't even matter if it's angst or the fluffiest of fluff, at some point I will just be crying because how do you even write :'33.
also skittleswar I know your Team doesn’t do those but you’re kinda my favourite human being so don’t even think you’re not getting a mention. Et bim.

Ooh, thanks! Now, let’s see (please don’t take offense if I don’t include you, I love a lot of people on here!):
sherrinford221b Great passion for F1 and lovely to talk to even when it doesn’t relate to the fandom.
nadayoghurt My partner in crime when it comes to headcanons and bouncing fic ideas off of. She is a wonderful human being and one of the main reasons I love this fandom as much as I do.
theflirtmeister Fic queen and thoughtful to boot. Many a time has she been there with a kind word when I needed it.
checkertheflag I scream over her art on a regular basis and her selfie game is hella strong. Not to mention all the anecdotes.
crazybee I have caused myself actual harm from laughing at her posts. She was also the one who made me think I could write more than the one Simi fic.
(Oh! I just noticed it says at least 5 so excuse me while I include two more, otherwise I will feel bad…)
urbiezira Simi squeeing partner but also someone who is very easy to talk to and I know I can say what’s on my mind and be honest without causing an upset. Very important human being.
marussiaaa Writes fics that make me want to punch things. Which may not sound like a compliment but it totally is. There have been numerous occasions where I have looked at the poetically crafted sentences and been quietly grateful we don’t write the same pairings.
checkertheflag replied to your post “[[MOR]The ongoing dilemma of do I try this acne treatment that will...”
oh god i feel your pain i've been dealing with awful acne since puperty urgh all the shit i've tried, freaky oils whO BURNED OFF THE SKIN. sweet memories
Right? I've been on so much stuff. I don't remember the name of it but I got put on one cream while I was at school and it literally felt like putting acid on my face and then it would just crack the skin and burn for the rest of the day. I looked worse than I had with the freaking acne and school kids weren't forgiving at the best of times. It stays with you. Which is why I've put off trying this new gel for so long.
1. First impression: Super rad person who lives practically on a freaking race track and tells insane stories in the most hilariously flippant manner.2. Truth is: I'm envious of the history you and your family have with F1! It's awesome.3. How old do you look: Late teens, I would say.4. Have you ever made me laugh: Oh yes, plenty of times.5. Have you ever made me mad: Nope!6. Best feature: Physical? Eyes (and your make-up is always hella on point). General? Your BAMF attitude.7. Have I ever had a crush on you: No8. You’re my: Queen of Rolipe Art (and future wife, apparently!)9. Name in my phone: Not in my phone10. Should you post this too?: Sure!
