Described as “curious, but not ornamental” by Bean’s Trees and Shrubs, the leaves of the Prunus laurocerasus 'Camelliifolia' (English laurel, common laurel, cherry laurel) are the usual size but curled and twisted. This vigorous, upright, evergreen shrub has erected spikes of small, fragrant, white flowers in late spring followed by fruit that changes from green to red and then black, but as you see these are poisonous.

Head scratching mining bee (Andrena spp.) on Portuguese cherry laurel (Prunus lusitanica). The cherry laurel has extraordinary amounts of pollen which require the bees to groom frequently or face being encased in it, hence the arm brushing the pollen off the head and antennae. At the back of the long border at Great Dixter, Sussex, Prunus laurocerasus ‘Castlewellan’ (cherry laurel, common laurel, English laurel) provides all year round interest. Laurels and variegation tend to be the Marmite of the plant world - you either love it or hate it! This plant has silver-marbled variegation, which gives it a light and airy appearance and it can easily be controlled by pruning.
