Modern productions of Figaro:

Try to make Cherubino look as boyish as possible – short hair, no makeup, figure-concealing costume – and make him look awkward and silly while disguised as a girl. Some recent productions have even cast countertenors in the role.

18th and 19th century illustrations of Cherubino:

Long waves of golden hair. Rosy cheeks and lips. Shapely feminine legs revealed by short breeches. Coquettish expression. No attempts whatsoever to hide that this "boy" is played by a beautiful woman.
