It has long been known that xantusiid night lizards are an ancient lineage that have persisted for tens of millions of years. But Chase Brownstein at Yale University and his colleagues suspected that the group may have actually arisen earlier than previously thought: in the Cretaceous Period, which ended around 66 million years ago...

Here's a 2022 painting of a Thescelosaurus (front lit by the low Sun from the west) amidst the Tanis devastation caused by the end Cretaceous Chicxulub asteroid impact (the orange glow from the south). Also features are Triceratops and Quetzalcoatlus.

My top artists rendition are these detailed rendered trexes standing on pixels of something watching the meteor hit apparently right in front of them. They’re only really social with family. Fun afternoon at the (beach?) in Yucatán ruined by meteor. Years of nuclear winter to follow. One of the rendered birds looks like. A biplane. This world is beautiful and do is the scientist that made this with love in their heart. Love is real and it is found in a scientists art. Love for these dinosaurs. The tragedy in two watching together. They wouldn’t have had enough time to both turn to look at it in this way but this depiction shows the grief the artist feels for them in how they gave the dinosaurs a moment to see the catastrophe. To stand together watching the apocalypse. The earth would regrow but these two don’t know that. Here they have a respite together before the end of it all. That’s a moment they didn’t truly have.

Or, I felt silly and decided to draw the Chicxulub incident in my DPR AU that was caused by some TNOs for some reason.

DUDE. Someone needs to make an Indie simulator of the mammals that survived the dinosaur extinction event emerging and struggling to exist and reproduce in the wake of the destruction. That would go CRAZY. Just this ashen, dead, cold, apocalyptic world covered in death and decay, and a few little mouse-like creatures having to brave the odds. Constant scavenging, constant hunting for water that wasn't poisoned by the acid rain, constantly fighting and resource guarding, sometimes resorting to cannibalism, desperately trying to mate, unknowingly ancestors to ourselves. I want that SO BAD.
