Aim for the Top! (known in English most commonly as GunBuster) is a mecha OVA released by Gainax between October 1986 and July 1987.  It was directed and co-written by Hideaki Anno, and co-written by Toshio Okada and Hiroyuki Yamaga.

In the near future of 2015, aliens destroyed a fleet of Earth’s space navy.  The series follows high school students Noriko Takaya and Kazumi Amano, along with their coach Koichiro Ohta, as they join the mecha squadron Top and train to pilot the ultimate Earth defense weapon GunBuster.

As happens with near future sci-fi shows like this, and especially mecha shows that take place in space, the technology that the production crew dreams up is naturally put on the forefront, and more mundane tech is put on the back burner.  That being said, despite the fact that most of the show takes place in space, there are a few instances of planes.

The most that we see airplanes in GunBuster are early on, late episode one and early episode two, where our cast flies to a near-earth station on a Japan Airlines horizontal-takeoff-to-orbit space-plane.  Unfortunately, that’s about all we really get.  We do get occasional glimpses of the standard space-fighters, which look to be much like fighter aircraft, but we only see them in hangers until the last episode, and by that point technology has advanced to the point that they don’t look much like planes anymore.  We also learn in the Science Lesson special episode 4+1 that the design of Exelion, the flagship, which I took as something of a Deathstar rip-off, is actually a lifting-body, made to take advantage of the ether of space (to do what exactly I’m not sure).

Ultimately, GunBuster doesn’t put enough forward to receive many points, and gets a middling score of two planes out of five.

To say you are clumsy would be an understatement - you are a hazard. The look on coaches face when you arrive to gym class is a look of pain ,he loves you he really does -you’re his niece after all but he would rather marry Stilinski than have you near the field and that’s saying something. Ever since you enrolled both of you have been pretty happy with leaving you on the bench.

Until Allison Argent showed up, all tall and graceful, athletic with a bright friendly smile, days passed and turned to years and you found everything supernatural out. Suddenly you had a reason to be active, having Allison as a girlfriend and constant supernatural attacks meant you had to get at least some physical activity done and gym class would be the only place that wouldn’t make it suspicious. Hiding your relationships from your uncle was easy when you were permanently excused from any sports and only had econ to worry about, you never expected him to catch you skipping class with Allison.

“You know Y/N, maybe you should go with me to the nurses office, I don’t think I’m feeling to well” Allison giggled, you rolled your eyes as you stopped walking to class and turned to her.“Want me to kiss it better?” Allison laughed at your response. You grabbed her hand “Lead the way, miss.” And you both walked away laughing. Hallways were empty, since most of the students were in class or ditching school completely.You took the moment to look at her tall, mesmerizing frame. The way she filled up the room with just her personality. She was a warm but dangerous ray of light. And by this point you were convinced she was the Sun. You decided that an empty classroom would be a great place, fine you didn’t really decide you just impulsively ran into one. Her lips locked on yours, fingers gently moving from your neck across your back gripping your thighs. You moved your head and separated your lips. You kissed her neck all the way to her ear nibbling on it, and kissing the spot behind it. It was a sweet moment. You didn’t get a lot of those with constant life threatening dangers, school and Allison traveled a lot with her father so on weeks when dates weren’t an option even classroom make outs were amazing. You relationship has been strained the last couple of days, because of distance…Missing each other and stress really didn’t do much good. Saying I’ll see you on Friday didn’t help much either because that’s a whole week away Allison. The classroom turned into heaven. “What are you starting at, what’s so interesting?” Allison questioned smiling.“Nothing really, I’m just admiring you that’s all.” You answered blushing slightly.“I love you Y/N, but you’re too cheesy.” “I’m just being honest.” You went in for a kiss, lips touching, hands roaming.When the door slammed open.“GREENBERG!” You heard a too familiar voice shout,“ GET IN THAT CLASSROOM RIGHT NOW BEFORE I…” you didn’t hear the rest of it but sure enough your uncle was standing in the doorway and…“(Y/N Y/L/N) WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING! GREENBERG STAY OUT! MAKING OUT IN A CLASSROOM, NOT ANY CLASSROOM ,BUT MY CLASSROOM!! HONESTLY EVEN GREENBERG HAS MORE SENSE THAN TO DO THAT… But I’m not mad cupcake and now GET THE HELL OUT!” Making you and a blushing Allison run out giggling. “WAIT ARE THE TWO OF YOU CUTTING CLA..Never mind, they’re gone and so is my youth…And my liver.”
