My Galavant: The Musical!
On February 18th, a year since ABC’s comedy extravaganza, Galavant, had ended I had gone to my computer and began typing out major plot points that would fit in a 2-3-hour stage Musical. It was separated by Act One and Act Two. On a separate Word document, I made a list of songs that I felt were the best of the show and were the most plot important. After a lot of retooling and fixing, on March 7th, I started writing the script.
For those who don’t know what Galavant is, I’ll summarize. (If you know what it is, feel free to skip this paragraph.) Galavant is an ABC TV show that first aired January of 2015. It was eventually renewed for a second season, and on May 2016, it was cancelled after only two seasons. It’s a musical, fantasy, comedy about a dashing, yet egocentric, knight named Galavant, who goes on a quest assisted by his squire and Princess Isabella to reclaim his reputation and happily-ever-after by defeating an evil King who not only conquered the Princess’s kingdom but also kidnapped Galavant’s lady love Madalena, who actually chose to marry the King for fame and fortune. Galavant was very unique. It continuously poked fun at clichés and stereotypes. The damsel in distress isn’t in distress at all, over the course of the two seasons she turns herself into an evil queen. Princess Isabella is a strong female character who will do anything to protect her kingdom and her family, she’s a smart leader who even leads her cousin’s army. The Evil King is arguably the funniest character in the show. He acts strong and forceful when he is actually just a weak willed, spoiled, big kid who wants to be happy and have friends and doesn’t realize what he’s doing is evil. And a snobby, selfish knight who’s only in it for the fame and glory, but learns to be a selfless person. Galavant’s so sappy. He’s a hopeless romantic.
From the first day, I started watching Galavant, I wanted it to be a stage musical. I could see it in my head, and I was just hoping that someday, someone would make it. I’m already a huge fan of Alan Menken. It was perfect for stage. One of my siblings and I had joked about making the script, about how it would go, what we would keep, what we would change. It was only until recently did I realize that I actually could write it. I don’t know where this will eventually lead to, if anywhere. I mostly see this as a writing exercise. If I can turn this show into a musical, I can write anything. Who knows what will come of it. I’ll keep everyone posted. Wish me luck!
