Only to the extent that we expose ourselves over and over again to annihilation can that which is indestructible in us be found.

Compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded. It's a relationship between equals. Only when we know our own darkness well can we be present with the darkness of others. Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity.

The third near enemy of compassion is idiot compassion. This is when we avoid conflict and protect our good image by being kind when we should definitely say 'no'. Compassion doesn’t only imply trying to be good. When we find ourselves in an aggressive relationship, we need to set clear boundaries. The kindest thing we can do for everyone concerned is to know when to say 'enough'. Many people use compassion ideals to justify self-debasement. In the name of not shutting our heart we let people walk all over us. It is said that in order not to break our vow of compassion we have to learn when to stop aggression and draw the line. There are times when the only way to bring down barriers is to set boundaries.

Compassion #3
The sixth and final stage of cultivating compassion involves all of the stages. We make a compassionate aspiration for ourselves, our loved one, our friend our neutral and our challenger.
We voice the aspiration that we may all be equally free of suffering and its causes. We then extend our wish even further to encompass all human beings without exception be free of suffering and the root of suffering.
Through greater understanding of suffering we can all be aware of how we need to stop acting and thinking in ways that escalate ignorance and confusion. We aspire to be free of close mindedness and fixation.
We wish to dissolve the myth that we are seperate.
E.g way to practice -> You may be at the supermarket and notice a particularly sad looking teenager. You may then wish him free of suffering and its causes.
We are all united through our worries, our hopes and fears and pleasures and pains.
We are deeply interconnected.
When we actively practice aspirations we no longer feel so separated.
life keeps coming together and falling apart again-- or perhaps it is falling apart and then coming together is the glass half empty or half full? is life primarily breaking or mending? hurting or healing?
