I've been convinced Mike and Will are modeled after Chris + Gordie in Stand By Me

I haven't watched Stand By Me in decades but I do remember the close bond between Chris and Gordie.

This excellent video by The Demo Station draws a TON of parallels that have convinced me that the Duffer Brothers modeled Mike and Will's personalities and closeness to those two. Apparently Noah and Finn also read lines from Stand By Me to audition or prep for their roles!

You have to watch this video - the resemblance of s1/s2 era Mike/Will to scenes from Stand By Me is eerie: how Gordie is a writer and is looked down on by his father and others, how protective and physically intimate Chris is with him, etc., etc...

While I'm guessing that Chris and Gordie are platonic (it's been a while since I watched it!), their relationship was QUITE gay coded. And the fact that most don't think they're gay gave the Duffers a model of how to hide a potential gay Best Friends to Lovers arc in plain sight...
