There's something oddly enticing yet utterly self-incriminating in the want of having another man in your arms.
Especially if said man is your best friend, laying unconscious three feet in front of you.
Especially if you're the cause of why your said best friend is unconscious, blood dripping down his pale forehead.
Chris Writzmann was frozen to the core, palms on the rough gravel of the road. His head ached to no end from the aftermath of yet another possession from his ever-so-lovely demon Nexus, yet the repercussions of this possession were nothing more than hellish. Toby, lifeless in nearly every form of the word, limply laid in front of Chris. Bruises lined his soft freckled cheeks, and blood trickled down his face from a last-second-effort scratch from Nexus. His clothes had some maroon stains blooming from his sleeves and areas of his chest, indicating that Nexus managed to definitely get a few hits on the kid. Toby's body was sickeningly pale from what Chris hoped to every god was fear rather than some kind of hidden blood loss.
In all utter seriousness, Toby looked dead.
Not a single sob, noise or yell could crawl out of Chris's throat, as much as he wished to. His mind and soul shook and screamed loudly, 'this is your fault'. Chris held back getting ill, nausea making its presence aware by what felt like literal vibrations in his stomach. Quietly, quietly and so shakily, Chris breathed and rested his forehead against the rocky gravel of the road. The setting sun of autumn rested gently on the two teenage boys, and a few birds who remained unmigrated softly coo-ed throughout the entire area. A chill wind quietly brushed its fingers over the two boys as if to soothe them from their traumatizing experience, but Chris wanted nothing more than to bat it away and quietly drown himself in the closest river or bathtub. He nearly considered it when he heard Viola's voice, as calm as a tornado, crying in fear for her two friends from down the oddly empty street.
Viola managed to explain it all; After school, Nexus possessed Chris and took hostage of his body. He held back on causing damage until both Toby and 'Chris' were alone, knowing Toby was one of the closest friends Chris had. Then, of course, Nexus decided to do what he did best; attempt to destroy the things Chris holds dear. This carried on from the outskirts of town into country roads which none of the group were even familiar with beforehand. Chris, managing to find the ability to glance around without crumpling to pieces, glanced around and noticed the small country road they were laying on. Long, long electricity poles stretched out beyond a setting blue autumn sky, and empty cornfields surrounded them. The grass on the sides of the road were splattered with blood.
Viola quickly managed to check for Toby's pulse in multiple places, attempting to not openly shiver like a leaf in front of a blood stained Chris. She nearly sobbed when she found the pulse she desperately searched for and wiped her eyes. "He's fine, Chris. He's hurt, but.. he's fine." she said in a soft, soothing attempt of a whisper, wishing for nothing more than for everyone to be safe and happy once again. Chris glanced from an electricity pole behind him to back at Toby, who was still looking pale and nonetheless terrible. Emotionless, Chris mumbled, "Are you sure?" As much as he wanted to believe the fact that Toby WASN'T dead from him, as much as he wished to believe he never risked killing him in the first place, Chris couldn't believe her. Viola sighed once more and aimlessly wiped her eye. A dark patch appeared under her covered eye before she let out a shuddering sigh once more, utterly miserable. "He's fine, Chris." she repeated, her calm tone now shifting to a much darker, sadder one.
Chris wanted to do so much. Part of him so urgently wished to do as he thought before and utterly drown himself in a bathtub, wanting his soul to disappear more than his need to breathe. Another part of himself wished to do nothing more but sink in his own sadness and disappear into television static. Another part wished to hug Toby close and never let go of him. The latter thoughts screamed louder and louder in his head, heart aching and sobbing out in fear. His head blurred and burned with the thoughts of thousands, if not millions of unspoken apologies and cries begging for forgiveness. In a silent moment, Chris made his decision.
And, of course, Chris did none of those things.
"Take him home, Viola." Chris said, tone shifting to something much more numb than he ever thought he was capable of. He attempted to rise on his feet but ultimately fell to his knees not out of physical weakness, but rather of emotional. Emese, Viola's monster, quietly rose from thin air from behind Viola and quietly wrapped herself around Toby as if to protect him from the world. "..Chris..? Why don't you want to stay here with him?" Viola said in disbelief, heart nearly dropping to the ground. She knew how much Chris cared. Successfully rising to his feet, albeit shaky, Chris muttered seriously, "He's not safe around me anymore. Take him home. Tell him I died or make him hate me if he hasn’t already." Chuckling dryly at his last comment, Chris looked at his scraped palms. Little bits of rock and gravel were stuck in his skin, and he quietly rubbed them off while accidentally smearing small patches of blood across his shaking hands. Viola, desperately trying to get Chris to listen, yelped out, "You can't! Toby, he.. He got really hurt! Chris, you need to be there for us!" When Chris turned to leave without another word, she sobbed, "For me!"
Chris continued walking.
"For him."
