Penny and Ruby want to go on a date but Ciel is being super strict about time so they decide to to distract her by having her run into a shirtless Jaune and then melting into a mess not able to handle her crush shirtless.

The Distraction

Ciel: Okay, if you want to leave for your date, you need to be awake by 7:00 hours. Dressed by 7:30 hours. Have breakfast by 7:00 hours. Meet up by the air pads by 8:30 hours. Leave on the Bullhead by 9:800 hours. You will arrive at the landing pad at 9:30 hours. You have from 10:00 hours to 12:00 hours to explore the mall. You then have 12:00 to 12:30 hours to have lunch. Then you have from 12:30 hours to 15:45 hours till the movie. The film should end by 17:00 hundred hours. You have from 17:30 to 18:00 hours to have dinner. You are then expected to be back here at Atlas Academy by 18:30 hrs. I will be joining you on your date to make sure you adhere to this schedule. Understood?

Ruby: Uhh... could you excuse us for one moment?

Ciel: You have five minutes.

Ruby: Okay….

Ruby: Look Penny, I know she's looking out for us, but I don't want our date to be running on a timetable.

Penny: While I understand where Ciel is coming from, I'm afraid it will get in the way of us enjoying our date.

Ruby: I don't want her third wheeling us on our date!

Penny: Me neither. But, Ciel is rather stubborn when it comes to sticking to her timetable.

Ruby: Crap... we gotta do something to keep her out of our way...

Penny: What can we do?

Ruby: Hmmm... Oh! I have an idea!

Penny: What is your idea?

Ruby: Just wait, and see~!

Ciel: Two minutes remaining...

Ruby: Oh come on?!

Ciel: Ruby, Penny, it is 8:37 hours... Are you ready to depart on your date?

Ruby: Almost, I just gotta do one thing first!

Ciel: And, what is that?

Ruby: Oh Jaune~!

Ciel: J-Jaune?!

Ruby: You ready to hit the 'Beach?'

Ciel: B-Beach?

Jaune: Hell yeah! I'm ready to hit the beach! I never knew Atlas had an artificial indoor beach. But man, I'm ready to hit the beach, and rewind!

Jaune: Seriously... I need to relax. Work has been exhausting...

Jaune: Hmm? Oh, hi Ciel!

Ciel: H-H-H-Hi J-J-Jaune?!

Ciel: Oh fuck he's so hot!

Ruby: Hi Jaune, we're about to head out on our date.

Jaune: Oh, what are you two doing?

Penny: We're going to the mall to watch a movie!

Ruby: The latest Warmech movie!

Jaune: They made a new one? I had no idea...

Ruby: Hey! I know, hey Ciel, why don't you join Jaune at the beach!

Jaune: Yeah, that's a great idea! No one else wanted to come with me, it'll be fun!

Ciel: Holy fuck! He's ripped like a brick warehouse... I want to climb that brick wall...

Jaune: Ciel?

Ciel: Hmm what, yes?!

Jaune: You okay, you're spacing out there.

Ciel: I'm sorry... I was busy with... with keeping the time...?

Jaune: Okay...? Anyway, are you coming?

Ciel: C-Coming? Coming where?

Jaune: To the Schnee Beach!

Ruby: Isn't it called the 'Schneach?'

Jaune: I refuse to call it by that name.

Ruby: Okay...?

Ciel: Oh, I... I-I-I don't have a swimsuit, so...?

Jaune: Oh we can get you one there! Come on, it'll be fun!

Ciel: Oh, b-b-but I don't think I can...?!

Jaune: I think you'll look great in a bikini, so come on, let's have some fun!

Ciel: Y-You do...?

Jaune: Yeah, you're really pretty

Ciel: Y-Y-You think I'm pretty?!

Jaune: Yeah. You're beautiful.

Ciel: O-Oh... t-thank you...

Jaune: So... are you coming, or not?

Ciel: Well... sure! I'll go with you!

Jaune: Awesome! Let's go!

Ciel: B-Bye guys be back at... Ohh?!

Jaune: Come on Ciel, forget the timetable, and let's have some fun~!

Ciel: Eep! O-Okay!

Ruby: Bye Ciel~!

Penny: Have fun~!

Ruby: ...

Ruby: They're totally going to bang aren't they?

Penny: Well, we're going to, that's why I didn't want her getting in our way.

Ruby: ...

Ruby: W-What...?

Penny: *laying down on Ciel's bed* ... Friend Ciel, i believe something is wrong with me.

Ciel: *frown* I was certain i did all the necessary maintenance... *Picking up her scroll* Can you describe to me what's wrong?

Penny: I recently started to... *Think about the best word to use* ... daydream.

Ciel: *pause, confused* I'm... sorry; daydream?

Penny: *nod* Yes, it is the most apt description of the phenomena.

Ciel: *frown* That's odd... What were you daydreaming about?

Penny: ...

Ciel: ... Penny?

Penny: I... *look away, slightly ashamed* I don't believe i should describe the things i imagine...

Ciel: I imagined myself killing team CRDL graphically numerous times when i learned what they did to Jaune. See? Even i have graphic inner thought—

Penny: *Hide her face as best she could* I was daydreaming about you and Jaune... And me.

Ciel: ... Oh, you... *Cough in her hand, trying to hide her own embarrassment* You meant THAT kind of— i see... *Quickly type something on her scroll, blushing slightly as she whispers to herself* Can't believe he was right... Guess there's no better time. *Smiling* Penny i need to tell you something—

Penny: *being a nervous wreck* I-i know i shouldn't even BE able to feel attraction, that i don't have the biochemistry inside me that should allow these types of feelings... That i'm just a robot but—

Ciel: *smash her hand on her desk, livid* YOU'RE NOT "JUST" A ROBOT! DON'T EVER SAY THAT AGAIN!

Penny: *taken aback by Ciel's outburst* B-but that's what *sees ciel get up* i am...

Ciel: *angry* You cry, you lie, you laze, you bore, you smile, you laugh; a "robot" wouldn't do ANY of those things!

Penny: *nervous* But you were the one—

Ciel: *cutting her off* I know what i said Penny! And every day i see you, every day we talk and laugh together, every day we spend as a team, i regret those words! You're as human as i am, if not more!

Penny: Ciel—

Ciel: *get on the bed, her face almost touching Penny's* You are my friend Penny, my best friend!

Penny: *trying to avert her gaze* C-Ciel, y-y-you are too close—! *feeling Ciel's arms softly reaching her back, hugging her* I j-j-just told you that i—

Ciel: It's fine Penny, i don't mind! I love you too.

Penny: *overheating* N— *hic!* N— *hic* No— *hic!* DAMN IT! *Push Ciel back, shaking her head vehemently* We can't! You're already dating Jaune; that'd be cheating!

Jaune: *open the door, not noticing the situation* Just got the message, are you sure she's— *finally notice his girlfriend laying atop of a petrified Penny* ... Ciel, i know you're the direct approach kind of gal, but poor Penny is looking as if she's on the verge of dying.

Ciel: *goes to speak*

Penny: *panicking* ITSNOTWHATITLOOKSLIKEISWEARIWONTSTEALHERFROMYOUPLEASEFORGIVEMEEEEE—

Jaune: *chuckle* See what i mean?

Ciel: *still hugging Penny* I... *Letting her go* Might have gone too far, yes. When she called herself a robot, i just...

Jaune: *Sigh* Can't be helped, i know. *Take a seat on the bed, smiling gently* Penny, what Ciel probably tried to ask you without much tact was; would you like to become our girlfriend?

Penny: *beaming, being hugged from both sides by Jaune and Ciel* It's sensational, isn't it!?

Neon: *Coming up on his rightHey HAndsome fella~

Ciel: *Coming up on his left* It is good to see you again, Arc. It has been too long since I've seen a colleague-

Neo: *On the bar in front of him* Forgiven me yet~

Ruby: ... Huh.

Jaune: Sorry ladies, I'm taken

Neon: Aw ... It's always the cuties ...

Neo: Unfortunate ... But if you ever want me, I'll know~

Ciel: ...

Jaune: Ciel?

Ciel: Are you open to a third?

Jaune: I- uh, I would need to talk to Pyrrha?

Ciel: Fantastic, Here's my number.

The Ace-Ops are pretty important to the Atlas arc's narrative and themes. They serve as foils to the main cast, show the differences in Atlas and the other kingdom's culture surrounding huntsmen, and become full on antagonists due to their blind loyalty from militaristic chains of command

Fixing RWBY though deleted them from the story, completely replaced except for Clover. Instead we have a stand-in for them called Strike Team 32, consisting of Neon, Flynt, Ciel, and Penny. This will be a post mainly about FNC rather than Clover or Penny who will get individual ones

First, this team is a mess of inspirations. The Ace-Ops were all based on Aesop's Fables, a consistent theme. Now we have Clover the only Aesop left, Penny AKA Pinocchio, Ciel whose inspiration is unclear (I could be totally wrong about this by all means correct me if I am), Flynt is based on a Roosterteeth inside joke, and Neon is Nyan Cat

Second, trying to retrofit these characters into an Ace-Op stand-in to serve a similar purpose in the narrative doesn't work because these characters fundamentally aren't meant to be like this. Flynt and Neon buck the expected trends of the Atlas military, and Penny is far closer to the heroes' ideals than Atlas'. Ciel is enough of a blank slate you could do whatever you want but that's 1/4 at best

Even their designs don't work for this purpose. The Ace-Ops' outfits all have the same color scheme as Ironwood's: Primarily white and dark blue, with black and red accents. This is a visual que of where their loyalties lie, and that they'll turn against the heroes when Ironwood does. Penny, Flynt, and Neon all lack this color scheme in canon and in FRWBY despite having the opportunity to change things. Ciel is the closest to the Ace-Ops here but again 1/4 at best

In canon the Ace-Ops are Ironwood's elite team of huntsmen, the best in Atlas' military (other than Winter who is directly stated to be Ironwood's top fighter). In FRWBY Strike Team 32 is nothing special. Atlas has 5 man teams with an experienced huntsman acting as leader for fresh graduates from the academy, that being Clover in this case

In canon the Ace-Ops weren't partners at the academy or anything, they were simply the best huntsmen in Atlas' military and had their designated partners based on their semblances and fighting styles being compatible on paper. This acts as a clear foil to how team RWBY was practically formed on a slot machine between the eye contact and chess piece rules, but they ended up forming far more natural relationships as a result. This dynamic is entirely removed with Strike Team 32 in FRWBY

Ciel's weapon is a pair of pistols that can combine to become a sniper rifle. Her Semblance is that she can slow down time for a few seconds, but she's affected by it too it seems to act more like a perception boost for her. She is very protective of Penny and hates pretty much everybody not in the Atlas military. She's pretty aggressive and hostile to everyone, especially Ruby. No doubt due to Penny dying in Amity. She also has a clear guilt over being unable to do anything to prevent Penny's death. She *might* have a thing for Penny but that could just be me looking too much into it. Nowhere near as explicit or clear as Melanie flirting with Cinder for example

Neon mainly serves as a contrast to Blake and their thoughts on faunus rights. Blake becomes increasingly angry and frustrated at all the discrimination that runs rampant in Atlas, and just wants it all done and over with as soon as possible. Meanwhile Neon ends up taking Ghira's canon stance of progress requiring time and taking pride in all the progress that's been happening. An Atlas faunus like her even being allowed past the first round of the Vytal festival would have been unthinkable ten years ago, although her team still had to fight the higher ups to allow her in round 2. However, this attitude she has also creates a mindset of allowing the authorities to abuse you and to just put up with it to avoid rocking the boat

Flynt by comparison doesn't have a ton going on. He's mainly just Neon partner and a mediator between her and Blake whenever they get into arguments, obviously siding more with Neon. I mean he does confront JNR on them doing "lame low level stuff" like acting as crosswalk guards, but that isn't exactly a lot

Throughout the volume we see RWBY and FNCP spending a fair bit of time together to develop these relationships and dynamics. Ruby with Penny and to a lesser extent Ciel, Blake and Yang with Flynt and Neon. Weiss doesn't really get this as her focus in the Atlas arc is almost entirely centered on her family

During the climax of the volume due to Ruby being framed by Neo an arrest warrant is put on all of team RWBY. Ruby and Weiss run across Ciel as they try to get to Atlas' vault to fix this mess. Ciel is winning for most of the fight until a team combo between Ruby and Weiss pins her down for awhile, giving Ruby an opening to escape while Weiss tries to handle her on her own

Blake and Yang are on a bullhead to Atlas HQ while this is happening and Neon and Flynt try to talk them into getting arrested. Neon says to not fight it and they'll try to sort it out. Obviously not okay with this, Blake and Yang fight Flynt and Neon and the bullhead they're in crashes as a result separating them

Weiss meets up with Blake and Yang as they're scaling the Atlas HQ building. What happened to Weiss vs Ciel exactly? Did Weiss just run away, did she think she had Ciel beat? Not addressed. WBY as soon as they meet up immediately get ambushed by FNC, losing one by one with little difficulty due to FNC 3v1ing them one at a time. At least it's consistent with FNKI's tactics in V3

FNC arrests WBY, probably writing them out of almost all of Volume 8 if I were to guess

In canon team RWBY beat the Ace-Ops for a multitude of reasons. For one, the training they receive in V7 has allowed them to reach the Ace-Ops' level, a sign of growth of how far they've come. For another, they win in service to the series' themes of unity and trust. Team RWBY knew exactly what they wanted and had each-other's backs throughout the fight, especially Blake and Yang

The Ace-Ops by comparison were a house divided because they all had different ideas on how to handle things. They didn't have a military commander giving direct orders like they usually do. And due to never sorting out their interpersonal issues they're clearly unprepared for situations where their emotions are running high, causing them to have arguments between each other mid-battle

In FRWBY though, WBY just gets their asses beat because they get ambushed and FNC 3v1s them one at a time. Should have played it "smart" like Celtic is obsessed with and used that tactic instead IDIOTS. There's no real thematic reason for WBY's loss here. It's not like there wasn't a theme set between them either. RWBY are all unsure of themselves in V7 if they're doing enough or just being Ironwood's mindless drones, while FNC are fully secure in what they're doing. But that doesn't play into the battle at all

I like Flynt and Neon, I'd like it if they got more screen time. I find them entertaining and they had a really fun fight. And I kinda liked what was going on with Ciel. But really? You're having characters based on memes beat the shit out of the main cast and send them to jail? Nyan Cat and a Roosterteeth Minecraft joke beat up three of your four main characters? As part of the climax to a volume? You don't see any problem with this? Are you fucking serious Celtic?

Just like with Oscar and Vernal, Celtic took the easy way out on "fixing" something. This time he replaced the Ace-Ops, characters that tied incredibly heavily to the Atlas arc's themes, for a bunch of characters he was clearly more interested in. Granted the Atlas arc isn't done in FRWBY and there's obviously more to be done with them, but they still make a rather poor Ace-Ops stand-in
