Mini Adventure: Cinema ‘76

They pulled out I'm Drunk I Love You on cinemas earlier than I expected, thus, I wasn't able to watch it. Then I stumbled upon this article about the showing of this film in Cinema '76 and so our mini adventure begins!

After I did some school errands like filming a street child for our Theology class, which he actually did for me. We left Intramuros early, even if our scheduled time to watch is 12nn. 1.) We don't want to be late 2.) It's our first time to commute to San Juan

How we went there

From Intramuros, we rode a jeep to Quiapo. From there, we rode FX going to Pasig and we told the driver to drop us on Dumlao. Landmark is Big Guys Pizza on the left side of the road, from there we walked along Luna Mencias street, until we reached Cinema '76 on the right side.

We arrived early, fortunately. So we had some time to check the place. One ticket costs P150. Oh the things we do for great films.

Cinema '76 accomodates 50-60 people and instead of usual cinema look, you get this cozy vibes because of couches and throw pillows! They even have a small dining area at the back so you can enjoy your meal while watching. How cool is that?

He already watched IDILY with his family, but he really wanted me to watch the film as well so he brought me here. I enjoyed the whole movie, it was artsy (indie music + film) and the cinematography, boy hands down!

After watching, we haven't eaten lunch yet and of course we're both hungry and we're both clueless about the food stores/mall around the area, so we just walked and walked and found this Shaw Center Mall.

I was craving for bagnet because of Maja. Fortunately, we saw this place which offers bagnet! Without second thoughts, we decided to eat here. I forgot the name of the place though.

I'm still in my washday uniform, ccccccringe. Hahahaha!

Cinema ‘76!

Dalawan beses palang ako nakakapunta dito (and I watched 4 indie films here [Pamilya Ordinaryo x Patintero: Ang Alamat ni Meng Patalo; Sakaling Hindi Makarating x I’m Drunk, I Love You) pero I swear, kung gusto niyo talagng maenjoy ang panunuod mo ng indie film, punta ka na sa Cinema ‘76! Sa San Juan lang ‘to. Masaya siya kasi para siyang living room na may mga sofa with pillows. May bar area where you can eat. Projector ang gamit nila pero pag nanuod ka, parang hinde dahil sobrang HD nito! May merch pa sila doon ng mga movies. Kahit maliit lang, sulit dahil makakahalubilo mo lahat sa tawanan, gulatan at iyakan. As in! Eto kasi; alam naman natin ang sitwasyon ng mga indie films sa mga sinehan like SM Cinema. Wala masyadong nanunuod. Ang onti ng tao at wala kang kasamang tumawa man lang o umiyak. Pero sa Cinema ‘76? Sabay sabay talaga kayong tatawa at iiyak. It feels like home kumbaga. At pwede pang magmovie marathon.

took myself on a movie date at Cinema ‘76. A cute cinema house with an adjacent cafe that serves cakes, coffee, and sandwiches you can bring inside the theater. I love how intimate the screening rooms are- it kinda enhances the sense of community for people who share the love of films (though I am the only audience plus the couple who sat in front of me during the time slot I picked).

I watched Alex Garland’s Civil War (2024) which is a harrowing film (I’ll probably talk about in a different post) The movie stressed me tf out.

I’ll come back here and watch their quiz nights (I’ve read they are hosting one for film nerds). I might join if I’m feeling brave at the moment.. but maybe not lol. I just love the vibe there. Got me thinking about making a list of cute theaters to visit. Anyway, my heart is happy today!

1ST TIME IN CINEMA '76 + SUZUME!

First impression, ang ganda sa Cinema '76 and the Cafe 🫶✨ Siguro kasi bagong location nila to (sa Anonas before) kaya good as new lahat. Madaming pwedeng upuan, malinis ang comfort room at approachable and friendly ng staff.

Nilakad ko nga lang from GMA kamuning akala ko medyo malayo. Available naman mga tric everywhere but as someone na ang exercise ay tuwing lalabas lang (ilang days na ako bahay lang para tipid? Char), kahit medyo mainit ay naglakad lang me. Dami ring nadadaanan mga restos and cafes. Siguro pag hindi busy mapuntahan din yun.

Anywaaaay nagkape lang ako talaga kasi kumain muna ako sa bahay bago umalis. I tried their Iced Caramel Latte, for me ang tamis sobra. Di na ako bumalik para magpa-add ng water kasi may dala naman ako. Medyo maaga rin ako dumating mga 45 minutes before start ng film kaya tumambay muna ako. Maganda rin naman ambiance sa labas and comfy kasi may couches and long tables sila kung by group. Maganda rin maging hangout ng barkada. May parking spaces din sa baba (2nd flr pala ang Cinema '76), tho di ko sure kung para yun sa mga resto and cafe sa baba 😆.

Ako pala unang pumasok sa Cinema. Sobrang feeling exclusive kasi 6 rows lang yun, 11 seats kada row. Tapos 6 lang kami nanood. Sa pinaka likod ako pumwesto para kita ko lahat haha. Tyaka nakalimutan ko salamin kooo feeling ko masyadong malapit din.

Di ko na iispoil yung Suzume pero super naenjoy ko yung film! Nawatch ko na ibang mga Makoto Shinkai films pero ito yung first time na sa theater ko nawatch. Parang everytime nanonood ako ng anime, di mawawala yung admiration ko sa country ng Japan. Their culture and lifestyle, if ever man ipanganak ako ulit sana Lord doon po? Char. Di ko alam kung makakapunta ba ako dun pero sanaaaa

Bukas na first day ko ulit sa bagong work. Kaya sobrang nasulit ko naman yung experience here. I hope sa susunod may kasama na ako, yung game din magexplore sa new cafes and nood films (busy friends kasi weekday ngayon 😆).

Saw Nocebo at Cinema 76. Probably the best local indie theater I’ve been in yet. Nocebo, Triangle of Sadness, and Everything, Everywhere, All at Once are all showing this January!

Indie date

Last December 21, our plan of watching an indie film at Cinema 76 Film Society finally pushed through. Aina and I literally traveled our way to San Juan. We took the MRT-Jeep-Walk kind of ride haha! We had fun travelling, though. We were supposed to meet at MRT EDSA station around 10:30AM but she was too early and I was too late :) Thanks to Baclaran traffic. We finally met at around 11:30AM huhuhu I let her wait for an hour so I gave her a slice of cake when we ate at Backyard Coffee, which is my 32nd cafe for 2016. We watched Apocalypse Child which was a very good movie. I am not an expert when it comes to writing a review about a movie but I really liked the movie. However, I think it is not the best indie film I have watched.

Cinema 76 is a small room that comes with comfy chairs (it has pillows and you may rest your feet up) and cold temperature brought by the air-conditioner. And when they say 2:00PM, it really started at 2:00PM. So let me discuss a simple review about the movie. Apocalypse Child might be your typical indie movie. The setting was in Baler, which makes it cinematography worthy. The story was straightforward with a hint of evasiveness. It basically discusses issues regarding family, friends and self. For me, it was plain but can stand on its own because of its uniqueness. I will post a separate entry for my review of Backyard Coffee. But I really had fun that day because I was able to watch the film I’ve been wanting to watch and I was able to survive the place I’m very not familiar with. Thank you, cinebuddy, for being with me.
