The vast majority of my tumblr feed is cute animals and feminist comments.  Many of the comments I've read recently have been on the topic of how frustrating cis-men can be.  Identifying as such, I'd like to offer this comment and encouragement:

A few years ago, I was VERY ignorant (and still am) about queer and feminist issues.  I spent many hours during car rides arguing with my friend who has a gender studies degree.  I argued all of the points that are (apparently) commonly used by cis-dudes.  I did not really yield in my opinions during the arguments/discussions.

However, I did listen.  And after days, weeks, or even months, my friend's statements stuck in my brain.  I started seeing things from a different angle, and realized that my outlook on gender was from a point of indoctrination and privilege.   I've begun to change the way I approach these things.

Obviously, I'm not perfect.  However, I think I'm getting better.  Tumblr has been a big part of keeping gender issues on my radar, because they can really disappear in the white guy world that I work in.

So, I guess the whole point of posting was to say this:

When you're discussing issues with people like me, and it seems like you're not making any progress, you probably are.  It's not fun for us to admit we're wrong, nor is it to have our world view questioned.  However, slowly but surely, what you say sinks in.  Dealing with us must be pretty frustrating, but remember that most of us wont figure this out on our own.  If my friend hadn't been so patient with me, I'd probably still be a misogynist.

I hate the terms cis-gendered or cis-privilege. It's like "oh, look, there are people who have nothing we can bully them with, let's bully them with the fact that there is nothing we can bully them with." Just shut up...if you're all so anti-labels, don't make up fucking labels.

I agree with You completely.  And my agreement is independent of my own experience of being approached with violent intent.  I hope You never experience anything of the sort; I hope that for everyone.  I'm not sure that anything I've escaped counts as attack -- but what's most important is that I've always succeeded in removing myself from said situation, and I'm grateful and more than a little lucky for that.  Please know I'm not advocating living in fear and perceiving experiences of violence as anyone's failure to be prepared to deal with the reality of the world as it is. Far, far from it.

Re-reading, I realise I didn't articulate super-clearly that I shared this list not as a this is how things are for us ladies so let's all be prepared' message, but as an "I am incensed and terrified by the fact that all this strikes me, a queer lady, as sound advice."  I just edited my initial post, too, to identify where my words end. One thing I quoted that's worth qualifying is the gendered assumption in the statement "Here's a good refresher for my lady friends."  The kind of interpersonal, sexual violence these steps encourage being aware of as a terrible thing that people inflict on others disproportionately targets women.  But I completely failed to check my cis-privilege earlier by not noting that many of my friends, regardless of gender identity, also navigate a world where the threat of such violence is never completely absent.  Being perceived as a woman in the 'as sexual object' and/or 'as lesser human' spectrum of senses by someone who hates women isn't functionally different from being perceived as any other kind of 'lesser human deserving violence' by those people whose existence keeps me at least a little afraid most of the time -- and whose existence I don't believe should be normalized as inevitable among any group of humans.

Privilege Lists

"Don’t quibble with privilege lists. If you read them from a standpoint of wanting to deny your privilege, you’ll come out having successfully denied it but learning nothing. Read sympathetically and think about it.
