today was absolutely massive, and the atmosphere at the etihad was buzzing with celebration and hope for the future.
city's 3-1 win against chelsea was fought for nicely, and the hunger that your club clearly had for that win in which the way they played showed how well they strived for it was such a pleasure.
"there goes full time!! congrats girl, happy for you," your best friend says - giving you a friendly side-hug. although you liked city and she came up from london to have a little manchester weekender with you, you guys' brilliant bond as bffs established a tenderness within the each of your hearts for one another's clubs.
"awh thanks~" you replied, hugging her back. "sorry we had to totally obliterate you."
"i'm telling you, if that new guy's goal wasn't offside, we would be down three points to you... i'd be on the floor literally!" she exclaimed.
"oh yes, him!! gosh, if only..." you went on dreamily, because a 4-1 city win to you would of course be even more satisfying than a 3-1 city win. "that guy...! what's his name again...?"
you thought hard... feeling a little silly for not knowing right on the spot. your mind was just a bit fuzzy after going (positively) mad after a brilliant match.
plus, you'd been off the internet for a good bit before this very day as it was only the errand you ran this morning to finally pick up your new cell phone. after having lost your other one due to some petty crime while in london just weeks ago with your best friend, your mind was riddled with insurance happenings, getting the compensation for that unfortunate event - transfer window was not your biggest concern.
"marmoush!" she said. "just came from frankfurt. bundesliga. i don't blame you for having to think... i know we're both more invested in the prems than any other league."
marmoush... you tried to process the name. have you heard that around. you weren't sure if you could even attach a first name to it from memory alone.
the bell didn't ring. not right away. not yet.
if only you picked up on the names of the players you'd seen almost a year ago after the friendies match you attended of egypt vs croatia.
your best friend commended you and your club. "he's seriously good, so i've been told. good stuff, girl. let's head down."
and so the both of you chatted away as you put your jackets on and slung your purses over your shoulders. the sky above the etihad was a beautiful contrast from how it had already looked when the match was beginning - starting out as sky blues merged into orange with the setting sun, now a clear near-nighttime sky.
your best friend then quipped; "hey, we've been sitting, like, almost pitchside today... let's go try and talk to one of the players before they go back through the tunnel!! get pics with them even!!! ...
...isn't that your dream, to interact with a baller? from your club especially?!"
lord if she wasn't the smartest person you knew!
"wait, you're a total genius. come quick~"
you two made way down just a couple of steps before you both pressed up against the very front of the stands where the adverts making up the perimeter of the pitch stood, phones in hand. close enough to get the attention of the players as they mingled about on the pitch before going through the etihad's tunnel.
and then some bouts of absolute magic had come you guys' way.
"oh my gosh, joško just smiled at us!" your best friend exclaimed, as the croat noticed the two of you, and gave a nod before going to pat a teammate on the back.
"and there goes your favourite winger~" you pointed out. chelsea's noni madueke also smiled and made eye contact with your friend for the split second, as he scanned the audience near the pitch to express his gratitude to - especially since he bagged chelsea's goal.
your bff? ecstatic. "oh my gosh! noni!!"
"that's crazy, two in a matter of seconds-"
"hey, y/n - over there!!" your best friend cut in.
she was pointing with her index, arm outstretched, and your eyes calculated to where she was pointing.
one of the city players who you'd never seen on the pitch until this very day.
but you finally got a good look, because he was looking right at you, approaching.
a man right about six feet tall with tan skin, black curls, a goattee... and an absolutely unforgettable smile.
you were so awestruck. "i recognize him from an earlier time...
...not from bundesliga."
"you remember omar! omar marmoush! you talked to him after that friendlies match last march..." she chimed.
omar got close to the pitchside stands, looked up at you, and his smile only curved up into an even happier one.
"y/n?" omar asked, his voice raised just enough so you could hear him amongst the loud atmosphere in the stadium.
"you remember my name, omar?"
"of course i do...
...i remember you! come..."
your best friend gave you the most mischevious smirk, her mind getting ahead of the times already. her bff reconnecting with the baller she'd met last year. "i'll wait for you guys" she whispered. you looked back at her with a smile.
omar reached out his hand in a very gentlemanly manner, leading you through the short gate that allowed you to step onto the grass. you were hesitant at first but he looked at you reassuringly.
"it's alright, the people working this place will see you're with me. they won't mind." omar chuckled.
you laughed along with him and shrugged, as you carefully stepped onto the pitch.
"we meet again, then!" you said, the stadium floodlights reflecting in your eyes. omar noticed it, and he felt some warmth in his heart. you looked really pretty.
omar nodded with another chuckle. "we do... yes. you saw us take a bit of a loss to croatia last year... but now you see me win."
your face was graced with a smile, as was his. he looked so... happy... to see you.
there was this fondness in his eyes that glimmered all thanks to the etihad floodlights reflecting in his own as they were for you.
both you and omar were in tune enough to really just take that moment in. look at one another and smile.
"i just..." omar started, kind of stalling, for even he was open mouthed in amazement for he got to see you. "i remember you, y/n. speaking to you after friendlies last year."
"i remember now too... sorry it took me a moment to even know it was you, i was just... dealing with so much these past couple of weeks. lost my phone in london... wasn't keeping up with transfer news... i had no idea you were-"
"i'm here. i'm at city." omar assured you.
that stall between the two of you happened again.
magically, it wasn't awkward though. it was just a pause... that made you two just really think about how cool it is that you two were face to face at a premier league match.
you couldn't lie when you told yourself silently in your head that the egyptian looks so good in city blue. so, so good.
the familiarity of his eyes and smile are really coming back to you.
"new phone, i see~" omar smirked, looking down at what was in your hand.
you giggled at that. "your memory, omar-!"
"i don't know, y/n! i just... remember you so well!" he beamed, his excitement so palpable for some reason. "i just thought of you from time... so it feels like yesterday we spoke after friendlies."
"from time?! flatterer..." you joked.
"don't you know the feeling? it's hard to forget a very beautiful face..."
omar sighed, his tone growing a bit softer. he was being straightforward, but he wanted to tell you honestly. "like yours... matter of fact, not like i want to forget it."
you wanted to give him all the thanks in the world, but his smug yet cute grin was already implicitly telling you; "no need to thank me." a blush tinged your cheeks as you shook your head softly, neither of your smiles fading even a bit.
he glanced at the pristine cell phone in your hand again. "wanna selfie?"
you nodded reverently. "that's what i've been meaning to ask, hah~"
"i'll get a flick of you two! pose, guys" your best friend declared, her phone already readied to get a perfect shot of you and the egyptian footballer.
omar looked at you happily, and slung an arm gently around your shoulder, as you two situated yourselves for a brilliant picture, smiling brilliantly for the camera. your best friend snapped away on her cell phone's camera shutter, and omar couldn't help but slither his arm to wrap around your waist for a few seconds. you even used your own phone to get some selfies in with omar.
"just sent you all the flicks!" your bff notified, the haptic and "attachments: 12 images" message coming from her line onto your phone confirming that. you thanked her as you saved them to your camera roll.
"can i have the pictures too?" said omar.
you didn't even need to think twice about pressing the "new message" icon, handing your phone to omar to allow him to type in his numerals. he did so with a smile - one full of hope... that so many more memories with you lay in the future after this. he handed it back to you as you attached each of the pics of the two of you to the chat, hitting send. a little "delivered" appeared beneath the images in an instant.
omar looked at you sweetly again. he figured as the volume in the stadium mellowed out, and the fans filed out, that he should be getting back. he brought his arms around you again, pulling you into an innocent hug. your best friend was silently cheering this budding connection on, as you closed your eyes for a second as you and omar hugged.
"i'll text you as soon as i'm home." omar promised.
"sounds perfect."
taking his sweet time, omar pulled back after a few fruitful seconds of you guys' hug, and he kept his hands gently rested on your shoulders.
"get home safe, beautiful...
...see you before you know it."
