24 July 1411 saw the Battle of Harlaw, near Inverurie.
A pretty bloody battle, by all accounts, aren't they all? Well apart from Carberry Hill, look for it in the group search box to your left if you don't recall it!
This was Scot against Scot clan battle, a feud between Donald of Islay, Lord of the Isles and Alexander Stewart, Earl of Mar, fighting on behalf of the crown, and was all to do with who controlled Ross, a large region of northern Scotland.
Donald planned to strike south east into Moray towards Aberdeen, along with 10,000 of his clansmen, Stewart, forewarned of their arrival, had gathered an army of Knights on horseback, of around 1,000, and over 1,000 spear-men, heavily outnumber but better armed.
Holding his knights as cavalry reserve, Mar organised his spear-men into battle formation to face the advancing islanders near the town of Inverurie,
The islanders launched charge after charge against the close packed ranks of Marâs spearmen but failed to break their ranks. Meanwhile Mar led his cavalry into the main body of Donaldâs army, where the islanders thrust their dirks into the soft underbellies of the horses, stabbing the knights as they fell.
By nightfall the dead littered the field. Exhausted, Mar and the survivors of his army rested and waited for the battle to resume the following morning. With the dawn they found that Donald had left the field, retreating back to the Isles.
The heavy losses suffered by both sides meant that neither side could claim the day; however Mar had successfully defended Aberdeen.
Among the dead was Provost Robert Davidson and many of the City Burgesses fighting on the Crown side.
The ferocity of the battle gave it the nickname "Red Harlaw". It is commemorated by one of my favourite memorials, on the battlefield near the town of Inverurie, designed by the architect William Kelly and erected in 1911. The inscription around the top reads "To the memory of Provost Robert Davidson and the Burgesses of Aberdeen who fell here, AD 1411". There are also a number ballads and music commemorating the fight
Listen to the song from Old Blind Dogs, it is a traditional one and the "modern version is Child Ballad 163, the song was first metioned in documents from 1549. The video has been cleverly put together from several films including Braveheart, Henry V and Agincourt.
Battle of Harlaw
As I cam in by Denniedeer An' doon by Netherha' There was fifty thousand Hielandmen A-marchin' to Harlaw." Wi' my dirrum doo dirrum doo daddie dirrum dey

"Yes we cam frae the Highlands man An we cam a' the wey And we saw McDonald and his men As they cam in frae Skye."

"oh na, Oh na," says John the Graham, "That thing can never be The gallant Grahams were never best We'll try what we can die."
As I cam on and further on And doon and by Harlaw They fell fu close on ilka side Sic strokes ye never saw.

Then back to back the brithers twa Gaed in among the throng And they laid doon the Hielandmen Wi' swords baith sharp and lang.
The first ae stroke that Forbes struck, He gart McDonald reel And the neist ae stroke that Forbes struck, The brave McDonald fell.

And when they saw that he was dead They turned and ran awa' And they turned him in Leggert's den A mile abeen Harlaw
Some rade, some ran and some did gang They were a' sma' record But Forbes and his merry men They slew them a' the road
On Monoday at mornin' The battle it began On Saturday at gloamin' Ye'd kentna wha had won

If you skip the video to 51:55, thereâs a really nice, non-violent confrontation between two clans of spotted hyenas, which lasts till about the end of the video. Even though itâs mostly a constant dance between charging and retreating, and the qualtiy of the video isnât too great, it was still really interesting to watch.Â
Spotted hyena territory battles can get very violent and bloody, but this one remained relatively peaceful.Â
Instead of being treated as monsters, after one of them (Kurama) accidentally saves a village itâs spread the word that the bijuus are actually NATURE GODS. They even have temples dedicated to adore them and you better donât even think on hunt them down or the clans who live close to their dens would chase you to the end of earth for try to harm their deities. The Uzumaki are clearly Kurama followers and Mitoâs seem almost as a deity herself for being able to hold a relationship of mutual respect with the grumpy fox.
The Uchiha and Senju, specially Hashirama and Madara, think theyÂŽre crazy. They literally have a living creature made of chakra within their grasp and instead of try to use their power for themselves they protect it from other clans cause they believe itâs a kind of God (Meanwhile on the background Tobiramaâs trying to decide which one of their enemies would be the best offering to Matatabi). And then after Hashirama starts courting Mito he gets a visit of her grumpy and furry friend which proceed to give him The Showel Talkâą

December 6th 1593 saw The Battle of Dryfe Sands.
This little known battle was between two Border Reiver Lowland Clans the Johnstones and the Maxwell.
For over half a century, the Maxwells and the Johnstones had been at feud and, during the 16th Century, they vied with each other for the supremacy of the Scottish West March. Being in a position of strength, the seventh Lord Maxwell, the Earl of Morton, decided once and for all, to destroy his enemy and his constant rival for power.
With an army of 2,000 horsemen he set about invading Johnstone territory in Annandale to destroy the Johnstone's family seat.
The Chief of the Johnstones, Sir James Johnstone received intelligence of the approach of the enemy. His available forces being relatively weak, he called for urgent help and his pleas was answered by the Grahams, Scotts, Armstrongs, Carruthers, Irvings, Elliots and others. He mustered barely 1,000 men.
Before the battle, Lord Maxwell offered a reward to anyone who brought to him the head or the hand of the Johnstone chief. In turn, the Laird of Johnstone offered a reward for the head or hand of Lord Maxwell.
On December 6th, 1593, Lord Maxwell, with his army set off to seek out the enemy. As it approached the Johnstone town of Lockerbie, near Dryfe Sands, it was harassed by a small detachment of Johnstones.
They attacked the vanguard of the Maxwells and then retreated, provoking them to pursue them, which they did. The main body of the Johnstones, which had been kept out of sight of the enemy, suddenly charged and caught the enemy off guard. Their disordered vanguard was sent reeling into their main force and in the resulting confusion, the Johnstones pressed home their attack.
The fleeing Maxwells were pursued through the streets of Lockerbie and beyond. At Dryfe Sands the slaughter was completed and the Maxwells were said to have lost 700 men out of their 3000.
It was here that the Johnstones used a peculiar downward cutting stroke with their swords, known afterwards as 'Lockerbie licks' which caused hideous facial wounds.
Lord Maxwell was captured alive and begged for mercy, but the Johnstones cut off his outstretched hand and slew him. The hand was fixed to the battlements of Lochwood Tower as a trophy.
Some years later, in 1608, a meeting of reconciliation was arranged between Sir James Johnstone and Lord Maxwell, son of the chief who was killed at Dryfe Sands. The meeting was carefully supervised. Each party could bring only one attendant.
Then during the meeting. Lord Maxwell suddenly drew a pistol and shot the Johnstone chief in the back, killing him instantly. Lord Maxwell escaped and made his way to France. Eventually he was apprehended and taken to Edinburgh where he was publicly beheaded.
The Battle of Dryfe Sands is said to be the last great battle between Scottish families or clans. It was only 40 years later, in 1633, that Rachel Whiteford discovered the Moffat Well and the town began to grow from a small village into a popular spa town.
