Idola Circus - Ch3 Body Drop
April 23rd, 10:24 AM. It hadn’t been the most eventful morning, at least for most of you. The nature of a dwindling population meant you were less likely to bump into others while going about your day, unless it was mealtime of course. The increasingly large building versus the lowering numbers. It made things feel lonelier, didn’t it? Still, stress was overall lower given the nature of the motive, so the existence of a body drop might not have been at the top of the mind when you received a notification on your phone.
:Sonny: admin office. now.
Now you don’t know the context of the message, but whether you heeded the call or not, the question was answered only a handful of minutes later, at 10:32 AM. A second notification reaches your phone.
🎵 Good morning everyone! We’ve got some more death on our hands! So nice to see so much motivation to get those rewards~ Please go to the hallway outside of the Administration Office within the next 15 minutes. And do try to not enter before further instruction, it’s not the most structurally sound ♡
Ah… For… this motive? Truly? Someone had… taken the leap? Oh god, who could it be? You began to make your way into the halls, to the upstairs, to the doors, the resounding uptempo sound of footsteps hitting the tile as if their lives depended on it. An urgency had spread like a miasma pushed by a hurricane.
The group rushed their way towards the administration office, dutifully waiting in the hallway to peer into the gaping doorway. The smell of rain and mildew struck you and you saw through the lingering dust in the air. Rubble collapsed on the floor, covering much of the tile you used to be capable of seeing. Mixed within the chunks of concrete and insulation were wires and bottles, though the brightest of the colors was a stark red of still-wet blood, attracting your eyes to two bodies and the people beside them.
That new colourful shirt of hers makes it hard to ignore the sight of María Dolores’s lifeless body sprawled out on the floor. Her face is contorted in a painful grimace, her skin speckled with burns and blood coating her head.
Most alarmingly, however, are the debris covering her legs. Ah - perhaps covering is the wrong word, judging by the pool of blood forming underneath. The display reached some small part of you, and you can’t help but think that, all things considered, it’s a cruel mercy that María Dolores is already dead.
Almost harder to see as much of her body was fully buried was the peaceful Clarabell, looking as if she were nothing but sleeping a quiet dream under a blanket of debris. Motionless and pale, were it not for the patches of blood decorating her sweater and the spaces around her, she might have passed for alive.
Any laughter she may have given you in the past remained caught in your throat. There were no kind words left to breathe, or clumsy accidents to bring joy. A vacant gap would remain in ConCar in her absence that couldn’t be filled.
It was hard to see the scene without hearing the loud, inconsolable sobbing from Sonny, kneeled beside Maria Dolores and holding her hand. Inazuma sits nearby, checking on Maria Dolores’s head, while Erika examines a phone beside the other two.
Miku Prime’s hologram appeared from the admin office’s clock, sounding the death knell as she glanced upon the gathered group, cheek in hand.
“Well! We’re missing a person, aren’t we? Well that’s nothing I can’t fix. I’d just like to make sure everyone’s here before I give you your murder files this time, ok? So let me just….”
Miku Prime snapped her fingers, and less than a moment later, Harper fell from half a foot above the ground in the hallway, collapsing to the floor with a loud ‘oof’.
“Oh! Sorrgy, another accident. I have been pretty clear with my warnings about being late though, Harper dearest. Try to keep up next time, ok?”
Again…. Huh? Miku Prime left little time for commentary, moving onto the important elements of the announcement.
“Well… First off, as you can see, this room is EXTREMELY structurally unstable! My estimate right now is that it can handle a group of five people walking around at most, so I recommend you only go inside in small groups at a time to look around, alright? Take turns! We don’t want any pointless extra deaths, now, do we?”
That thought left you with a shudder. What horribly uncertain and dangerous conditions were you being left to investigate in, huh? It’d be a risk to be walking around in there at ALL. Yet the expectation still remained.
“You’re all welcome to either wait in the hallway to look around, or to look somewhere else first if you aren’t the first group peeking. Oh…! By the way! You should take a look in the Arcade SEKAI this time, because I'll confirm there's evidence there. There’s… only two of you left now, though, isn’t there? You two had better split up. Maybe one of you can let an extra group in if you have time later, too.”
“Hmm… I think that’s all I needed to tell you before you get started this time. You have two and a half hours! Good luck, and here's your files!”
The hologram from the clock flickered out of view, leaving you with a daunting task ahead of you and a ping of the Miku Files appearing on your phones. You braced yourself, as it was time to get to work.
Heart of Shattered Glass | Constellation Carnival: Witch, Clarabell, and Miku | Battle of the Bands Chapter 3
Simple stark-white geometric objects float atop the surface of an otherwise empty lake, partially obscured by a light mist. Tall crystalline cylinders of ice are interspersed among the blocks and pyramids, almost imperceptible thanks to the mist. There is no noise save for the light whoosh of the breeze and the soft lapping of the waves against the shoreline.
A sound suddenly breaks the silence: the strumming of a guitar. Out from behind one of the white cubes steps Witch, who slowly makes her way to the center of the stage while playing some melancholy chords. Her outfit, which blends the aesthetics of harlequin and magician, features a black capelet interwoven with stars and sequins, a leather corset, striped leggings, and short boots. Completing the ensemble is a top hat with an oversized Tarot card– the Star– tucked securely in its band. The light refracting through the ice crystals casts her shadow on each of the structures, and the low reverberations of the gloomy tone echo off of the icy surface, adding an air of mystery.
A voice harmonizes with the guitar as Constellation Carnival’s Miku also emerges from behind a structure and steps out into the stage, donning a short black and red dress, split in color down the middle. Underneath her skirt, a pair of white, fluffy bloomers puffs out, and a pair of long black boots with red buttons end right above her knees. She stands front and center with Witch behind her, soft wordless vocals melding perfectly with the guitar. With each note she shifted to in her tone, the cool harmonization was enough to leave goosebumps.
Behind both of them, partially obscured but still visible is Clarabell, dressed in similar attire as the other members. A soft glow from a laptop illuminates her face, multiple wires connecting the base connecting to a pair of speakers. Emerging from the speakers like trickles of water were synths, as swipes with a mouse against the ice mix and tune the backing in real time. Scattering ice crystals follow each motion, adding to the fog in the air.
With the performers fully assembled, the song slips from its slow, somber opening into the up-tempo first verse. Witch’s expressive guitar intertwines beautifully with Miku’s haunting vocals, and Clarabell’s backing track ties everything together, like a methodical and careful dance.
Amethyst and sage, obsidian and salt
Catch a falling star and place it in your hair
Lavender and rosemary, sunshine and cobalt
Now promise me that you’ll always be there
The shadows cast by the trio intertwine on the different white structures and coalesce to form reflected by the song shapes– crystals, flowers, stars, potion bottles. On two structures directly behind them, the shadows become two distinct figures: a pair of girls in profile, arms stretched outward into the empty space between them. As the song continues, dissonance begins to form between the vocals and guitar– the former, slow and somber, the latter up-tempo and slightly aggressive.
My dreams
My hopes
The promise that we made
I sealed them here in this glass jar
So that they would never be harmed
I kept
It safe
Until the day you lied
I couldn’t hold on and saw it fall
It broke apart and I lost it all
The shadowy ingredients grow in size and overtake their structures, leaving them all engulfed by darkness, the temperature in the air dropping to a chill. The two figures are pulled apart as well; the one on the right lifts its hand to its face and shudders in apparent laughter before it, too, is overtaken by shadow. The figure on the left falls to its knees, now alone.
How can I go on?
Where have my dreams gone?
What else can I do?
When I don’t have you?
The dissonance from before fades and the shadows recede as the song moves into its second verse. The only shadow left is the lone girl, who moves from structure to structure as if looking for something. Witch glances back over her shoulders as she plays, her focus split between the song and the shadow puppetry. She has to get this right. Miku’s breath forms puffs of fog into the air, many of her limbs still exposed to the cold. Yin and yang, the light and the shadow. The warmth of passion and desperation paired with the brisk calm and echoing melody.
Azurite, aventurine, sunstone,
The days swept by, the stars looked on
Heaven, a gamble, luck and warmth
The moon bore witness to our fading song
More shapes form, tying into the song’s lyrics– several crystals, a moon, stars. But the girl can’t find what she’s looking for and returns to the center structure with her head down. Then she too disperses and fades away, and the shadows overtake the structures. Naught but darkness remains, like the last flicker of a dying campfire snuffed out. Though the haunting hymn continued forth, the stage stood empty.
Your hopes
Your dreams
Everything you believed
I made them all a part of me
Now I’m afraid to set them free
What’s real?
What’s not?
I don’t know anymore
I held onto what I once believed
But now I know I was deceived
How can I go on?
Where have my dreams gone?
What else can I do?
When I don’t have you?
Witch’s guitar wails, signalling the beginning of a solo. She plays intentionally and passionately, building upon the emotional core of the song with each bend and slide of the strings. This isn’t pointless shredding to fill time. It’s all of Witch’s feelings blended together to form a cohesive whole, sorrowful yet hopeful at the same time.
Behind her the shadows shift and recede, starting out as formless shapes that move rhythmically along with Clarabell’s backing track before coalescing again to form a new scene. The girl is back and looks upwards as shadowy stars form on the other structures, and as Witch’s solo reaches its emotional end Miku resumes her song, eyes directed to an unseen tower, reaching outwards to a structure nowhere to be found. She dances along with the flickers of the shadows in a gentle spin and sway, a waltz with no partner.
Gazing into the starry sky
I remember what it was like to believe
Even if you’re gone, even if you lied
The hopes inside me will never leave
The shadow of the girl places her hands on her chest. She then lifts her hands, and is now holding a star of her own– the very thing she had been searching for all this time.
I have to go on
My dreams are not gone
I know what to do
I’ll go on without you
My dreams will come true
With or without you
The melody that opened the song reprises itself as one by one, the pillars of ice shatter and fall away into water. Each shattered crystal removes a shadow from a structure, until only one remains: the shadowy figure of the girl. Holding the star close to herself, she “walks” off the side of the structure just as the final ice crystal shatters and eliminates the shadows entirely. With that, the song comes to a close.
Taking a deep breath, Witch steps forward to stand alongside Miku and gestures for Clarabell to join them. Miku trots over wrapping one arm around Witch’s shoulder in comfort and whispering something small that only the three of them can hear. Witch raises a hand and wipes her face before addressing the crowd.
“The song we just performed is titled ‘Heart of Shattered Glass.’ We hope that you enjoyed it, and thank you for listening to Constellation Carnival’s third performance.”
Erosion Girl | Clarabell | Trial 2-3 | RE: Suzie
Clarabell was mostly just listening to the accusations being thrown around, and it wasn’t obvious if there was any clear way to find out for certain if it was somebody or not, just a pure guess based on whoever seemed most likely. She didn’t like this, it didn’t feel good not having something more concrete, but she supposed that this was just the way things had to go for the time being. Her voice was softer than the last time she spoke up, no longer on the hot seat by the looks of it.
“Suzie mentioned I only went into the performance hall at 1:30… I don’t know how long I was alone in the infirmary doing my checks on the inventory but surely even if Jed left around 11 I wouldn’t have had any reason to go in and out of the performance hall more than one time, so I think I’m in the clear…”
She pouts a bit and just looks around the room, there was a lot of pressure on Johann, it wasn’t a situation she would want to be in herself, but she also didn’t have any way to defend him after everything was said and done. Then again, it wasn’t as if she had any clear idea on why it had to be him in specific, still, she figured she’d further clear her name, and maybe Jed’s too while she was at it, if she could. Clarabell gestures down at her clown costume, a small patch of it around her midsection that looked to be discoloured and damaged similar to Jed’s boots, she made a bit of a face, mostly guilt, but also discomfort.
“I didn’t want to point it out because I was worried before it would make you all think it was me even more, but I also got some paint thinner on me, it just happened while I was checking over Takuma, it isn’t hard to get a drop or two on you so if anybody still thinks Jed’s boots are suspicious I think that because I also have some on me its not enough to go off of.”
She rubs the spot a bit, clearly a bit upset at the damage, her costume was pretty expensive after all. Still, it was more important that things get resolved one way or another.
“So I don’t really now who else it could be… I get not wanting to confess to something like this… I don’t think I would want to… so I don’t think its fair to ask Johann to confess… because we could be wrong, and we could be trying to convince him to admit something that isn't true... we just have to go with what we think is right. If we’re wrong then that’s just how it is right? This is Miku’s fault, not ours… we’re not detectives… we can’t expect this to be easy and for somebody to just admit to this… because if they do then they have to die too…”
A soft sigh as she looks down to her feet.
“So um… I dunno I think we can just trust what we believe…”
Hack Girl | Clarabell | Trial 2-2 | Re: Swan, Lau-Fei
Cecilie forgiving Maria didn’t matter to Clarabell, nothing anybody said would ever change how she felt in that moment, but it was at least enough to get Clarabell to stop staring daggers at the woman. She took a breath, looking away as Erika spoke up about leaving it be, and simply decided that it could be figured out later. She didn’t know if she’d do anything, but she wished she would. There was a moment before Clarabell simply crossed her arms, her shoes squeaking a bit as she adjusted her posture. However, it wasn’t really until Swan called her out that her demeanor changed quickly from anger to discomfort. She somewhat expected this. Taking a moment to think over her words she clearly shifted about, bringing her hands up to fidget with as she carefully considered what she would say, there was a lot to think about but she just sort of frowned by the time her thoughts came to their end.
“You just have to believe me… I don’t really have any good way to defend myself… I promise I didn’t kill Takuma… I was just sitting there in the performance hall just thinking to myself, my footprints probably don't ’ match the bigger ones and I definitely shouldn’t be strong enough to overpower somebody like Taukuma right? Also um… the ladder was on the outside of the door… to lock Takuma in the room, so I was easily able to just move it out of the way to get in…, so the killer wouldn’t have been able to go back in for Takuma’s phone to leave to the bar SEKAI unless they were in his unit…”
She didn’t know if that was a good enough defence of herself, she just kind of fumbled through the words and looked around at the others.
“I also definitely wouldn’t cover for somebody, even if it was Jed or anyone, murder is wrong! So no matter what I would never cover for another person! If Pellonia killed somebody and I knew about it I’d never hide that if I knew it!” A pause as she takes a breath. “Also, Sonny and Inazume definitely saw me, they just didn’t mention it well enough I guess… it was right after I woke up, Inazuma was playing that game or whatever and Sonny was on her laptop charging her phone… I wouldn’t be able to just make up those details right?”
Her eyes looked around for some kind of validation from her peers, surely somebody could offer her some help.
“Also you coulda just followed my footprints right? They should have shown how I moved around right? One of you must have seen it right?”
She huffed, clearly frustrated, she wasn’t really sure what else she could say past that, a pit in her stomach as she looks about, she didn’t bother pointing fingers at somebody else, that felt just as discomforting than anything else. She just sort of put her arms down by her side and took a deep breath.
“Listen I… don’t know when Jed left the infirmary and so I don’t know when I left to go to the stage, but people were with me for so long in the infirmary, how would I have had time to get any of the stuff to kill Takuma? I just don’t think it could be me…” She pauses for a moment. “Listen it's not really helpful I don’t think and I forget if anybody mentioned it, but wouldn’t it make sense if while he was dying in the room after the killer locked the door with the ladder Takuma tried to run away to his SEKAI? Why wouldn’t he, right? So um… is that something we need to consider too? I don’t know… maybe somebody already said this and I missed it so I’m sorry if I did… but like… you just have to believe it isn’t me… I… don’t know if comparing my hand will help me at all but I’ll do it if I have to… but if my hand is bigger that’ll just make me look worse… so I don’t really think that's helpful to me at all…”
