Spring Dunes | Point Reyes National Seashore. The pacific coast is not plentiful with sand dunes like these in Point Reyes National Seashore. For the most part the Pacific coast is too steep to allow for the accumulation of sand to form dunes. However, sand dunes are vitally important for a variety of reasons. Healthy sand dunes protect our shoreline for damage caused by storms, wind and tidal surges. Often new coastal developments will remove sand dunes from the coast line leaving populated areas at risk. They also lower temperatures by blocking the sun's rays from baking the lightly colored sand. Additionally, the dunes provide a safe and healthy habitat for numerous wildlife species. With out the dunes the wildlife that make the dunes their home as well as he humans who populate the coast pay the price. Now is the time to understand how vital these habitats are and protect them.
