You're Not Wearing That
A low profile mission calls for the boys to wear civilian clothing, which brings dismay to what his men pick out.
◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇
"When picking your suit, keep it simple. But if you have to be extra, Kix, pick a floral design." Rex explained, standing next to Senator Amidala. "After you choose your suit, try it on, Senator Amidala will make sure everything's how it ought to be then you're all set."
"If you're feeling over welmed, the Captain and I chose out some suits already, they're all right here on this rack. But, please, take a look around the shop." Senator Amidala said with a smile.
She didn't know why the 501st was on a Coruscant mission and not Fox's men, but she didn't mind their company, it gave her time to catch up with their Captain.
The small group of men, Kix, Echo, Fives, Hardcase, and Jesse all gave each other a smile before dispersing into the store. "I was hoping they'd just look on the rack" Rex mumbled as the two watched his men disappear into the jungle of clothes.
"Me too," Padme sighed as she turned to push the rack of disregarded suits. "Wasn't Ahsoka with us?" Padme asked, taking a swift look around the store.
"Yes, she arrived with me and decided finding suits for herself was the best way to pass time while we awaited your arrival with my men" Rex explained.
"Ah, looks like I may be making another few purchases then." Padme chuckled, "What about you? Did you already pick an outfit?"
Rex looked to her and smiled, "No, but I'm almost certain Ahsoka or my men will find something they want to stuff me in. I'll humor them" he said as he went to look at the suits on the rack.
"Sir, I found a suit" Jesse said, seeming to have appeared out of no where. Rex turned and nodded, Jesse then begun showing Rex what he'd found.
"...You're not wearing that" Rex sighed, arms crossed. Padme appeared busy, but had secretly tuned in to the conversation.
"What?! Because it's pink?" Jesse asked, getting slightly defensive.
"No, because it's hot pink. Low profile Jesse. That suit screams 'hey look at me" Rex explained, "Try Rose, rouge, peach, heck, even magneta" Rex said, "More subtle vod."
Jesse frowned and looked at the suit he'd grown attached too. But now was looking forward to find all the other pink suits. "Yes, sir."
Rex shook his head, letting out yet another heavy sigh. "These men have no fashion sense" he'd turned to Padme, who was occupied by an eager padawan showing the senator what she'd found. "What did you find?" Rex asked, tuning in.
Ahsoka's eyes were glittering. "I found a plaid suit, a yellow one, and.. Oh! I found a 501st blue suit too, look!" Ahsoka exclaimed, holding it up for Rex to see.
He nodded, "At least you have a good taste in clothing" he chuckled, "You should go help the boys, they need it."
"That's an excellent idea," Padme smile, "I'll take those suits while you go help them."
"I'll see if they'll want my help, but I can put these away whole I'm over there" Ahsoka smiled as she adjusted the clothing in her arms.
Padme smiled, "No, I mean I'll take them so I can pay for them, I know you weren't too fond of the dresses Anakin and Obi-Wan picked out for you."
Ahsoka's face lit up even more, "Wait, really?" Padme nodded and next thing she knew, the young padawan had pulled her into a hug. "Oh, thank you, Senator"
"Of course, Ahsoka. Now I'll take these and go help them, they need it." Padme told her. Ahsoka nodded and grabbed Rex's hand.
"Come on Rex, you gotta look fancy too!" Beamed Ahsoka as she dragged the Captain.
"I knew you'd do that." He chuckled as he caught up to his friend. "Just one request, it's gotta be 501st blue."

After Army?
"After I have served, I want to go far away with all my brothers and live. Actually live."
"This isn't ideal, but I'll get to see my brothers. All the brothers I never get to see anymore."
Captain Rex laid alone in a field. The shooting had stopped for at least 10 minutes. He'd been counting as he started to lose feeling.
He was cold, in the blood stained grass. His eyelids were getting heavy. "Maybe... I'll close them, just for a second." He mumbled, words slurring as his throat went dry.
Screams. He heard screams. Who's screaming? Were they looking for him? Rex couldn't tell. He had to admit, he was surprised his men hadn't jumped out when he went flying out. "They probably have to find me"
Letting out a bloody cough, he finally closed his eyes. Maybe he was meant to end here. He was scared, but relieved. No more war. No more.
"Sir?! Wake up! Sir!" A bother said, "Oh, please Rex, wake up!" The voice belonged to Fives, who was not going to loose his captain. "I couldn't save Echo, maybe I can save you."
Rex had been talking to Echo, he said his life after Army was nice. He got good at sabaac, made Shirley temples, and even sang at karaoke. "Sounds nice" Rex had said, before hearing Fives' voice. "Mm? I guess it's not time for me to leave" he said, he gave Echo a very tight hug. "I'll tell him you said hello." The Captain said before he walked to the red.
"Dammit! Rex!" Fives screamed as he keyed his location to Kix. Fives removed Rex's chest armor to reveal the bloody wound. Next thing he knew he was pushing on Rex's chest.
Fives didn't think, didn't breathe, the only he did was focus on bringing Rex back. He needed Kix to get here now. Fives instantly shot back off of Rex when he heard a loud cough.
Rex's eyes shot open and his whole body ached in pain. A giant smile of relief spread across Fives' face, "Welcome back, Captain" the arc trooper said as he wiped his eyes.
"F-fives? Fives... I saw Echo" Rex spoke, barely able to compose a sentence. "He says hello"
The smile dropped immediately. Did he hit his head? Fives took a second to look at his beaten captain then his eyes went wide. His attention turned to the bleeding wound on Rex's abdomen. "Shit! I gotta- I gotta pack your wound. Or, at least hold pressure" Fives babbled as he looked for anything to press the wound with. He felt for the rag he usually carried and thanked the stars he had it.
"Kix will be here soon, sir" Fives told him. He pressed harder on the wound, the bleeding won't stop. "It has to stop." He mumbled. It has to stop. Rex's breathing was short and staggered, and though he knew it wouldn't do much he still tried to help Fives.
"I talked to Echo" Rex said again. The man couldn't process where he was exactly, couldn't remember what had happened but he didn't care. All his mind could focus on was how much he hurt, and Echo.
"I know, sir." Fives sighed as he looked desperately for Kix. "What's Echo doing?" He asked, against his better judgment.
"B-being" the Captain stopped due to a coughing fit, startling Fives. He's getting worse. "Being happy" he finally got out. "His with our brothers."
Fives stared off into the distance, letting himself get lost in the fact Echo was happy. Even if it wasn't true. "After the army" coughed Rex, "They're together"
"That sounds nice" Fives mumbled as he turned to his Captain. His face was pale and sickly. But he was smiling. He took Rex's hand, "That sounds really nice."
"I- I wanna be with my brothers" Rex whispered as his weakened hand was held by Fives. "After the army. When I die"
Fives looked to his Captain with concern. "With all due respect, sir, you're not dying today"
"But would that be so bad?" Rex mumbled as he closed his eyes went again, "To die and spend eternity with our brothers?" All his strength going to tightening his hand around Fives', who gave him a weak smile,
"No sir, it wouldn't"
Beginnings
In the form of Cody and Rex becoming friends back on Kamino.
◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇
"So... Does that mean you're a defect?" A young cadet finally spoke after a long minute of silence. Rex, or the cadet that would later be known as Rex, scratched his head in discomfort.
"I- I mean, not really?" He tried to explain,"I think it's just my hair."
The cadet that had raised this to attention turned to his brothers beside him. "The Kamionions probably don't think that though. I mean, did you hear about that one defective clone? He'll never get to fight. Are you still gonna fight?"
"What? Of course I'm still gonna be able to fight?!" The young boy's voice raised in distraught. "I- why wouldn't I?" He asked them, scanning their faces in confusion.
"Well," one shrugged, "I guess that's good. If I had your defect I'd be terrified of being swept aside. No wonder you're always working harding than everyone else." The boy said, then leaving the blond haired boy alone.
He watched them leave, holding his own hands tightly as his stomach sank. "What do they know" the young cadet mumbled under his breath. He tried to be angry, thinking of words he wasn't allowed to say. But it failed.
The ten year old boy felt tears starting to swell. He kept his head low as he went to a supply closet. He stood there, fists clenched in frustration, "What do they know? What do they know?!" He hissed. Unsteadiness growing, trying so hard not to cry but, "Everything, they know everything!"
Tears finally fell as he gave into his emotions "I hate myself!" He tearfully screamed, kicking the metal wall. He turned his back and slid down against the wall. Hiding his face in his hands and sobbed. "I hate me."
A very social cadet had headed back to the barracks to grab a gift for one of the Kamionions when he heard a loud thud. It had scared him, yet intrigued him at the very same time.
He listened carefully, thankful the barracks were empty. As this clone walked he heard muffled sobs, making him want to find this brother even more.
The cadet tracked the crys to a supply closet, he opened the door carefully, "H- hello?"
The crying boy jumped and instantly started to wipe his tears and stood up. "Uh, I - I just dropped something." He tried to explain, but his face gave it away.
The clone in the doorway raised an eyebrow, then closed the door. "You're crying" he stated. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing wrong! I'm not crying I just dropped something and it landed on my foot and-"
"You don't need to lie" he inturrupted, walking to his distraught brother. "I'm CT-2224." He said, holding out his hand.
The other boy wiped his eyes and sniffed. "Uh, CT-7567" he mumbled, yet again wiping his eyes. "You don't have to make friends with me" he told his brother while shaking his hand.
"But, I want to. Come on, let's sit. We'll be friends" the future commander smiled. The boy that had been crying cracked a small smile and sat across from him. "So, how are you doing?" He asked with a smile.
"Great, I'm having a good day, what about you?"
"You're still lying bro, come on, you shouldn't be alone if you're upset." He said. This particular brother wanted his brothers to be happy. He'd heard the whispers of the Kamionions, terrible whispers
The distraught brother looked down and then back up at his brother. "I-" he tried to speak but his voice went weak. "I'm a defect" he cried in a whisper. "An-and that's all I'll ever be" he let out, hiding his head.
"What? Come on! That's not true!" The clone that would later be known as Cody said. "You're not a defect!"
"Yes I am!" He sobbed loudly, "Look at my hair!" He collapsed into his brother's arms. The future Commander instantly tighten his hug around his brother and tried not to cry himself.
Seeing his brother so sad and upset made him that way too. "I think your hair is awesome" he mumbled as he held his brother. "But... If you don't, why don't we cut it?"
The brother that had been crying for so long pulled out of the hug, wiped his eyes as he cleared his throat. "You... are you serious?"
His older brother smiled and held out his hand. "Yeah! Come on! We'll go freshen you up in the refresher and then give you a snazzy new haircut!" He exclaimed. "Sound like a good idea?"
The younger of the two smiled widely, taking his brother's hand tightly, "Yeah, that sounds great"
Don't tell the Captain
Fives and Echo explain the long list of reasons not to go to their captain. But when their grumpy captain just happens to be pulled into the conversation, well, he's not having it.
◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇
"Don't tell the Captain"
Something said a lot, when someone forgets to do something, did something stupid, or are planning on doing something stupid. But in this case, it was Fives and Echo filling in the shinies.
"You have an itch? Don't tell the Captain, go to Kix. Are dehydrated cause ya didn't listen when Rex says drink ya water, go to Kix. Need your hair cut? Tup's your boy, the Captain may have excellent hair but he doesn't wanna spill his secret. Hungry in the middle of the night? Rex is too grumpy to wake up unless someone is dying. Come to me or Echo, we have goodies."
Fives had explained all the 'unsaid' rules to the newest batch of shinies. Don't go to the Captain for anything that isn't too 'official'." Fives told his newest brothers. "It's not that he won't help you, he just doesn't want to."
"Oh, and if you want to go have an adventure when on leave go to Hardcase, he always has some fun things planned" Echo added with a smile.
"Questions?" Echo asked as he finished handing out the reg manuel that he wanted them to read. (But they weren't going to).
"J-just one." A shiny spoke, raising his hand. Echo turned in delight, they usually never get asked questions. Fives nodded to the clone, granting permission. "What about relationship advice?"
Echo's eyes widened slightly. That was actually a new one. He decided to turn to Fives, who was arguably the more suave of the two.
"Well, uh, leeme think." Fives said. He didn't have an answer. Usually he could bs it, but who did they confide in? "Well, uh, I guess any older brother you feel comfortable with?"
"But.. What's the reason we can't go to the Captain?" Another spoke. Fives looked at the shiny and plastered a fake smile as he thought of yet another bs answer. "Like does he not wanna talk about his relationships? He hasn't been in one? Or he just doesn't wanna talk about something so informal." He spoke.
Echo looked to Fives, who returned the glance and sighed, "Well, uh, I haven't personally thought about it, I mean..." Echo scratched the back of his head as he looked around for anyone who could give a better answer. "My guess is Rex just doesn't wanna talk about it?"
"Talk about what?" Their esteemed captain had appeared behind both Fives and Echo, causing them to jump.
"Oh, uh we're just telling the shines who to go to for personal issues not work related" Echo explained as his heart rate calmed down.
Rex raised an eyebrow then glanced over his new men, "What have these two told you shines?" He asked.
"Well sir," one begun to speak, "We know where to get our hair cut, midnight snacks, wierd itches, uh, and uh where to go if your dehydrated" he explained. "But they hadn't answer our question about relationships"
Rex's usually face of annoyance grew slightly as he looked to his ARC troopers. "This is what you tell them?" He mumbled, shaking his head. The Captain then looked back to his eager group of shinies, awaiting an answer. "Well, I suppose Kix would be your best bet, or Jesse. Kix will give you serious advice, whereas Jesse will talk about pickup lines and such." Rex explained.
His men mumbled in understanding. "Anything else" Rex sighed, part of him wishing he hadn't walked in at all.
"Wait, sir- Fives and Echo explained all the reasons to go to other brothers and not you, what's the reason sir?" Spoke one of the braver shinies. Echo's and Fives' face quickly dropped, with only one thing on their mind. 'Oh no.'
Oh no, yes, oh no indeed. The Captain stared blankly at the shines then angrily at the two trouble makers. "Well.." He started, gritting through his teeth, "If I ever had the time to sit down and actually tune into the conversation with you, I'd give you an answer, but it probably won't be the one you'd expect." He explained. "Does that answer all your questions?"
"Yes, sir!" They all seemed to shout in unison, much to the Captain's dismay.
Rex forced a smile and nodded. "Well then, I'll leave you with the capable hands of Echo while I talk to Fives." He said, giving a look to one of his ARC troopers.
"Uh, yes, sir" Fives said as he followed after Rex.
"Please don't tell me you're teaching the shines to avoid me when they have problems?" He asked Fives once they had gained a respectful distance from the group.
"No, no, just the ways to stay out of trouble and leave you alone at all times." Fives explained, glancing to Echo, wishing he was with him.
Rex sighed, he was no longer tense. "Alright, Just... Just make sure you two aren't making them feel like they can't talk to me, Fives, you know how important trust is." Rex explained. "I don't want them to think I can't be bothered with them."
Fives nodded, "Of course, sir. Well, I guess I best, uh..rearrange how I say things." He chuckled. Rex nodded and gave a small smiling, patting Fives' shoulder.
"Good man, well have fun." Rex said, giving Fives one last look before leaving.
Fives watched Rex leave before running back to the group with a smile. "....Well, anything else?" All their hands went up, even Echo's.
