Closing Notices... Winter is Coming on Broadway

Yes, the cold winter of box office lows are coming... You can tell, because the Spring shows that are struggling at the box office are posting their closing notice. 

In the past week, both Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812, and Bandstand have announced that they will close early September.  But why?

Why are these two shows struggling at the box office? Both received Tony Awards and good or better reviews!  

The answer is exactly what my dad told me, “It’s not what you make, it’s what you spend.”  The costs for these shows to run (their “nut”) are more than they expect to make when the summer ends; therefore, they won’t make it.  It’s very sad to see these shows that are wonderful, smart, beautiful and moving, close so soon.

As a stage manager, the closings remind me that we not only have a responsibility to artistically maintain the show, but also to be fiscally responsible. We have a part to play in the financial health of our shows because the choices we make can affect the bottom line. For example, do you need to bring a full crew for understudy rehearsal? That costs money.  Can some rehearsals be done without props & scenery?  Is it better to rehearse in a studio instead of onstage? Some shows I’ve worked on give a departing cast member a bonus if they give 8 weeks’ notice instead of 4.  This allows any new wardrobe pieces that may be needed to not be rushed; therefore, saving a lot of money in construction labor and shipping.

Those are just a couple of examples, others include: avoid rehearsing on the day after the day off, watch out for cast & crew overtime, insure the show ends before 11pm, etc... 

We try to make the best choices possible for the show, in all respects, therefore, our awareness of the bottom line in our business is important.  It’s not that stage managers can make or break the running of a show, but it’s a good reminder to us all, that Broadway is a business, not just the home of the shows we love.    

If this side of the business is interesting you, you may have a future as Broadway Producer!  The weekly grosses of all the Broadway shows are published in a few places, like BroadwayWorld so check them out.  You won’t know the “nut” as that is not public, but it will give you an idea of the financial health of the shows you love, so you know what you should see sooner than later.

And if you haven’t seen COMET or BANDSTAND yet, do it soon.

Hey folks, we have some sad news. After some deliberation, we’ve decided to close All The Worlds for now and place the roleplay on indefinite hiatus. At the moment, Cameron has other real life responsibilities outside of the roleplay, which leaves him little time and energy to dedicate to admining. With the nature of the roleplay as it is, it’d be really difficult to continue and keep up with only a single admin. As much as both of us would like to continue the roleplay, it just isn’t feasible at the moment.

Despite our short run, we’re so thankful to all our dedicated members who’ve kept us strong and active up until the end. We’ve all met so many wonderful people and fell in love with all of your characters. Roleplay with all of you guys has been a trip.

While all the characters are your own writing and of your own creation, we’d ask that our writing, lore and graphics not be used in another group roleplay or in independent roleplay. If there’s threads or stories you’d like to continue past closure, feel free. It’d just be in more of a 1x1 capacity.

We’ll be keeping the skype group chat up if you’d still like to use it, as well as the ooc blog on tumblr.

The Cookie Counter, Greenwood’s vegan bakery and ice cream shop, has a note on their door, announcing they are officially having their last day on February 29th, Leap Year Day 2020.

My favorite cookie from them is a Chocodoodle, which is half Snickerdoodle dough, half Chocolate-Chocolate-Chip, and it sort of comes out like a yin-yang of the two flavors.  I’ll have to eat a couple more before they’re gone so that I can reverse engineer my own later.

NOTICE

i’m going to be honest. this post was coming for a long time but i’ve delayed it as far as i can. most people have left the kagepro rp community so there’s very few people left and i feel insufficient compared to the rest since they have better themes and everything. rping hibiyo has taken a lot of time and energy from me that i’d personally like to use for my own wellbeing. most of you people don’t know that i usually barely eat and i spend most of my time thinking of how to reply to threads here. rping has become a chore even though it should be fun. it’s hard rping a noncanon character. rping hibiyo has been one of the best times of my life but it’s over. i can’t do this any longer. maybe one day i’ll come back or maybe i’ll just make a new blog. but until then consider this blog closed. i’m still rping!! but i’m just done with hibiyo. you can rp with me here and my main blog is here. maybe one day i’ll be able to handle this.
