So, my mom smokes like a chimney. She always has. When my sister told my mom that she was having a baby, she pleaded with my mom to stop smoking not only for her health, but also for the baby's health, in the event that the baby would come and stay at my parents' house. Fast forward eight months, and the baby has been born and it's time for the christening. It's gonna be a big deal. My sister asked my mom, at the very least, to not smoke in the house for a couple of weeks before they come and stay for a few days. Mom agreed. Now, my sister and I are a team. We feed one another information and strategy to deal with our sometimes difficult family. I happen to be visiting my parents a week before the christening, and she asked me to tell her if mom was smoking in the house. The moment I walked in, my mom lights a cigarette. So I quietly send a text to my sister to that effect. My sister, who has apparently lost her damn mind, IMMEDIATELY calls the house phone and yells at mom about smoking in the house, completely throwing subtlety and strategy to the wind, and throwing me under the goddamn bus in the same breath. So, of course, my mom lost it, as now she has proof of what she has suspected for our whole lives- that her daughters often collude against her without her knowledge. Luckily, my dad defended me, lessening the charge of espionage. My sister asked me a question, and I answered it. Even if we weren't spying together, (which we totally were) what did Mom expect? For me to lie to my sister? With a couple of emotional phone calls, my sister managed to spin the situation and somewhat right things. Still. What a night.
