Ways of thinking about community involvement
Casey Jones large-scale turtle invites the involvement of others to collaborate. Bringing communities together for a good cause. It opens the conversation to problems that affect the world. Plastic materials are dangerous for sea creatures. The creation of this project delivers a cohesive idea to people in open spaces.
Letting them know that plastic is an issue and as a group, we can solve it for the better good. The Aquarium has a great input to this community project. Their usable bags help the prevention of plastic. Getting more people using non-plastic bags. This will improve the sea turtle population.
The project has changed the social behaviour of using plastic for everyday use. Environmental people are becoming more aware of the relationship between the ocean and the sea-life. The value of this sculpture opens the door to positive outcomes. Hence, it has successfully directed people to be cautious of their surroundings.
The resilience of the Chinatown Art Brigade
Betty Yu is raising awareness and is giving a voice to threaten communities. There is a sense of compassion for her culture since her younger days of protesting. Creative Mediums have become the modem to promote perspectives of the unheard. Chinese immigrants that live in Manhattan, have been treated very poorly. The idea of projecting light onto various buildings throughout Chinatown empowers strength and unity. It gives residents + tenants of those communities a voice.
“Art is to the community what the dream is to the individual” – Thomas Mann
The presentation of ‘resilience slash resistance show’ is another method like projecting. The fact of allocating two different spoken languages to understand as one. Influences society to appreciate the consequences of diversion. The next step for this movement is to encourage society to change perceptions of illegal immigrants. So that they have the free right to create opportunities for themselves. Preserving the identity of Chinatown.
