Task force 141 with a reader who is very quiet. So quiet, in fact, you even sneak up on Ghost— though unintentionally most of the time. The first time you met the team, you gave a brief nod to the men in front of you with Laswell practically singing your praises: agile, lethal, intelligent, skilled, yada yada yada.

Ghost was more than apprehensive of you at first. Of course he was going to greet you like he greeted the rest of his brothers, but new blood had always set him on edge. When he caught sight of your significantly shorter frame he would be sure to track you: not maliciously, but to observe and understand.

Gaz liked trying to get you to open up. He’d crack jokes, save you a spot beside him during Soap’s movie nights, and explain inside jokes whenever one was cracked in front of you. Gaz slowly got into a rhythm with you, though, even though you hadn’t said a word to any of the guys nearing your four month ‘anniversary’ of joining the force. You’d go to breakfast, train, lunch, go over intel, game a little here and there, read a little, dine, and go separate ways. Gaz, for the record, considered you his family before the day even ended.

My boy Soap. He would drive himself to the brink of insanity to get you to even smile! He saw you as a challenge— just as Gaz did (at first). But John? John was scared for you. He’d seen many take the path you did and it didn’t turn out well for them. The smart but not Harvard level smart kids who were good athletes and even better problem solvers who enlisted because they wanted to make a change in the world or because they had no other option. They either caught a bullet or went insane. And you? You were young with quiet praises from people you previously worked for. You had a life ahead of you that should’ve stayed untainted by the actions of others. John’s heart squeezed in his chest when he watched you watch the guys: breathing steadily and occasionally tilting your head whenever one of them got put in a headlock. Missions came and went. A year went by, you communicated with sign language and written words. You had grown more than acquaintances but less than friends with the guys. You had built your walls so high, you didn’t think you could escape them.

Then you spoke and Johnny pissed himself and Simon’s jaw went slack and John himself almost had to sit down.

It went like this:

Gunfight somewhere in America. You had heard Gaz’s short, wounded cry from thirty yards away. He cursed, mouthpiece catching the garbeled words he tried to speak. You flitted around, ducking and diving and doing everything to get to Gaz- Kyle. Your brother in arms.

Ghost and Soap were screaming something unintelligible through the coms. You couldn’t hear them if you wanted to: you were too preoccupied with soaking your skin with the blood of the people that had harmed your family. You stuck the knife into the man’s neck- and while he was gasping for air- you took your sidearm out and shot the last guy in the thigh to deal with later. You took hold of the knife in his throat and dragged it harshly—violently— to the other side.

When he fell to the ground you sneered at him as his glistening eyes searched yours in fear. Your brought your foot up and stomped on his bleeding neck.

You threw your knife into the back of the last man, the one crawling away. You watched him slump forward and immediately turned to Kyle, who looked at you like…

“Hey, imp,” Kyle greeted raspily. “I see wh-why people call you that now. You’re short… and you’re super crazy.” The smile he offered you was not white and soothing like his usual smile; it was bloodstained and more of a grimace than anything.

You glared at him, seeing the bullet wound in his shoulder and lower chest. You also noticed that his ankle was twisted at an angle that was not normal. Your hand pressed harshly on the hole on his shoulder as you pressed his own hand into the wound on his stomach.

His groan of pain made you grit your teeth. You remember how you built those walls: people died or left you and you were left alone. And as much as you hated being alone, you would rather to yearn for comfort than mourn for comfort that would never come. But being here and now, you realized your walls were clearly not nearly high or strong enough than they should have been.

“I love your eyes,” Kyle muttered, shuddering with every breath. “I like how your eyebrows are furrowed right now, and-and I- fuck- I like the way your nose curves like it got broke and never healed right. I like-“ he coughed violently and you wondered where the hell Ghost and Soap were, “-I like lookin’ at your lips and wond’rin’ what you’re voice sounds like and if you’d taste like the raspberries you like.”

Your eyebrows seemed to furrow even more. Before you blinked, Ghost’s voice crackled through your ears: “Keep him talkin’, Imp, we’re on our way.”

Kyle’s watery eyes flickered between yours and he seemed to go lac under your arms, something that scared you greatly. “I really don’t wanna die without knowing your name, but it’s selfish to say that, I think.”

Gunshots in the distance and Kyle was blinking slowly.

“Y/n,” you finally said when he had just closed his eyes again.

Kyle’s eyebrows shot up. “What?”

Your lips pursed. “My name is y/n, Gaz.”

Kyle’s lips pulled into a smile. “Y/n. You- wow. Please talk more.”

You blinked. “Whaddaya want me to say?”

“Kyle. Say my name, y/n. Please call me Kyle.”

You heard footsteps and new your other boys were coming to help. Kyle was watching you completely: limbs slack and breathing slow and eyes trained on you. “Kyle, you’re coming home alive.”

Kyle nodded, silently encouraging you to continue. You heard a chopper somewhere, undoubtedly sent by Price. “Again.”

“That chopper’s here to take us home, Kyle,” you said.

Kyle’s eyelids were getting heavy. “Please.”

“I’ll be here when you wake up, Kyle.”

Kyle passed out as soon as you’d gotten in the air. You sat staring at the knife in your hands. The blood had long oxidized and was starting to flake. You slid the blade under the thin white line of your nails and rid yourself of the caked blood.

The turbulence of the plane soothed you. You didn’t like going from rabid with an unhealthily high heartbeat to being rocked back in forth in the pretty blue sky like a baby.

The boys had taken a page from your book and hadn’t spoken a word (which, if we’re being real, was really painful for Soap). They didn’t say anything when they returned to base. They didn’t say anything when you followed Kyle to the medbay. They didn’t say anything when they led you to your room and pulled out clean clothes. They didn’t say anything while washing some fresh raspberries and watching you to make sure you ate before going back to wait for Kyle’s surgery. And they didn’t say anything when they fell asleep on either side of you, hulking frames offering you something to lean on while you dozed.

The first word they spoke was to Price. Price also didn’t say anything until he roused the soldiers to go check on Kyle—who’d been sleeping since getting out surgery.

Ghost patted your shoulder and urged you into the room, saying “anyone needs ta see ‘im, it’s you, little Imp,” he grumbled affectionately.

Kyle twitched occasionally: sometimes small like a finger or his nose, but sometimes they were whole body twitches like his leg or arm. You quietly pulled a shoddy plastic chair closer to his side and slid into it. Slowly, you slid your calloused hand into his. “Kyle,” you murmured. So lightly, so delicately. As if a butterfly was sitting cautiously an inch from your lips, and, should you disturb the creature it would simply dissolve into atomically small ashes.

“I’ll be here when you wake up.”
