when alphabetizing a list of titles, should “the” be ignored (eg should “the shining” be listed under S or T)? if so, are there other words that should also be ignored? does this apply to titles in foreign languages?
for English titles, it's common practice to sort titles that begin with "the" as though the article were either not present or at the end of the title instead (Shining, The). this is sometimes extended to titles beginning with any article at all, as in Series of Unfortunate Events, A or Extremely Goofy Movie, An.
whether or not this is best practice depends on the use case. if you're only alphabetizing a short list of titles, it's probably fine to leave the articles unchanged, but if it's a longer list, if you don't do something with the titles that start with articles you're gonna have this huge section of stuff that starts with "the", which can be inconvenient.
other languages have different common grammatical words that are often ignored when alphabetizing things, with articles and grammatical particles being the most common cases. however, if these are non-English titles included in a mostly-English set, it would probably be confusing to apply these rules to them.
collation in general is a really interesting topic imo, and there's a lot of fun nuances to consider! personally, I have the opinion that whenever a list is sorted purely alphabetically, it represents a failed opportunity to find a more meaningful method of sorting things
