ATTN: Possible New Fandom Name Proposal
HI Skeleslime! I’ve discussed this idea with you a bit through PM already, and since you liked it enough I thought I’d submit a post about it for others to consider. I recommend adding tags for all those nonhuman characters to give this some more exposure too.
Hey everyone! So something I’ve noticed on Tumblr, probably since the early 2010s, is that there are many blogs/fandoms around that tend to focus on exotic non-human characters. Specifically things like Monsters, Robots, Demons, Aliens, Object Heads, and so on. They tend to talk about & make art of existing characters from different media, as well as create their own non-human OCs. And there also seems to be lots of overlap between these character fandoms, regardless of genre or setting.
It almost feels like it’s own thing (somewhat similar to the furry fandom but distinctly different) and I’ve wondered if there’s a general name for it, but I haven’t really seen anyone try to describe this stuff in some kind of umbrella term. So I’ve been thinking about a possible title for this fandom/subculture, and I think I just came up with a good one.
The name that I propose is………Creaturepunk
Why this name? For one, it’s all about creatures! The word “creature” can be defined as any non-human animate being, which would technically cover all those non-human characters that are liked so much, and it seems to be a unifying theme. And the “punk” part comes from the other ’-punk’ fandoms (cyberpunk steampunk etc.) because many of these creature fandoms seem to have a punk-ish style to begin with; As I’ve said these creatures (especially OCs) can sometimes borrow from different genres and concepts and mash them up into really unique creations. Plus I think Creaturepunk just rolls off the tongue really well.
Frankly I think this fandom has technically already been around for a while now, but AFAIK it’s just that no one’s really tried to put a good label on it like this. But hey, sometimes you have to start somewhere. There’s probably more things I could discuss here, but mostly I just want to throw this idea out there.
