Just last week I posted an article on Facebook about the Bainbridge House in Princeton, #NewJersey becoming the future home of offices and exhibit space for the @princetonu_artmuseum. Here is what the house looks like from Nassau Street. The house was built in 1766 by Job Stockton. Today, it is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Princeton. When the Continental Congress occupied Princeton in 1783, it served as lodging for its members. The house was later leased to Dr. Absalom Bainbridge whose son Commodore William Bainbridge fought in the War of 1812. Carpenters' Hall in Philadelphia, #Pennsylvania. Completed in 1775, the meeting hall was built for and is still owned by the Carpenters' Company of the City and County of #Philadelphia, the country's oldest extant craft guild. The First Continental Congress met here. The federal Custom House in Philadelphia was located at Carpenter's Hall between 1802 and 1819. Congress Issues the “Declaration of the Causes and Necessity of Taking up Arms”

On this day in 1775, the Second Continental Congress issued the Declaration of the Causes and Necessity of Taking up Arms, explaining why the American colonies had begun resisting British rule. Written primarily by Thomas Jefferson and revised by John Dickinson, the document listed major grievances such as taxation without representation, military oppression, and violations of colonial rights.

Even as tensions escalated into open conflict, the declaration carefully insisted the colonies were not seeking independence—at least not yet. Instead, it framed their resistance as a fight to defend constitutional freedoms while still expressing loyalty to the British Crown.

July 2, 1776 – The Continental Congress Moves Toward Independence

On July 2, 1776, during the American Revolution, the Continental Congress took a decisive step toward breaking away from British rule by adopting the Lee Resolution. Introduced by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia, the resolution formally declared that the American colonies “are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States,” effectively severing political ties with the Kingdom of Great Britain.
