zionism is an inherently ethnonationalist ideology bc if the state wants to keep a jewish majority, they need to enforce that. which is why palestinians will never have the same right of return rights, land ownership/building liscensinf rights, or religious privileges israeli jews do (palestinians are not allowed to convert to judaism in israel!). it's why jews are not allowed to marry non-jews in israel (without getting married in another country). you are running defense for an ethnonationalist ideology and that's not only embarrassing, but makes you a deplorable human being
Nope. To literally all of that. Let’s count the ways.
1. Zionism is the idea that Jews have a right to national self determination, in their indigenous homeland. It does not specify anything about a form of government, a political party, any specific policy, any politician, or any ethnic majority.
2. Most countries have an ethnic majority. Almost all. Mostly because countries arise around ethnicities. Israel does not need to enforce anything, that’s the kind of thing that happens naturally. You could argue that limiting immigration could be a way to enforce it, but that’s an extremely gray area, and has about 10,000 other reasons behind it.
3. Palestinians do not have a legal right of return because who’s returning? Children of people who fled during a war Israel did not start? There is no legally established right for them to return, nor is Israel obligated to allow that. Especially when the people belong to a nation that does not want peace with Israel. Good luck passing an immigration check.
4. Non-Jewish people in Israel have the exact same legal rights as Jewish people in Israel. The only thing that is slightly different is an easier path to citizenship. Which again, most countries have for their majority ethnicity. And is genuinely part of most indigenous rights movements. The point being if you’re indigenous to the land, the government representing your people should make it easier for you to immigrate. But things like land rights, housing rights, and religious rights, those are all equal.
5. Arab citizens of Israel are absolutely allowed to convert to Judaism. Palestinian citizens of Palestine, no matter what their religion, cannot use conversion to immigrate to Israel, and that has nothing to do with religious laws. Nor that unequal. It’s to do with their governments continuously attacking Israel. they should feel free to convert to Judaism, but their governments do not treat that kindly. So maybe focus that criticism on Palestine.
6. Marriage in Israel is religious. It is not civil. And in Jewish religious tradition, a man cannot marry a non-Jewish woman. And a Jewish woman cannot marry a Muslim man, because the Muslim religious authorities do not allow Muslim men to marry non-Muslim women. That part is Islamic law. Since again, Israel only has religious marriages, governed by Islamic law, Jewish law, and Christian law. Judaism ALLOWS a Jewish woman to marry a non-Jewish man. But Islamic law does not. Therefore it is not performed. But of course your only issue is Judaism.
7. So. Not only are you hypocritically critiquing an indigenous rights movement, you’re doing it badly. Most of the things you said weren’t true for Israel, but are true for pretty much every neighboring country. But you don’t care about that. Genuinely. You do not give a shit about any of those issues. You just want any weapon you could use against Israel. And that’s why your arguments fall apart every time. Because you’re arguing backwards. It’s never going to be solid. Do better.
