Control Fields are what Ingress is all about.  It is the vehicle that drives the control of mind units for the two factions you are given as option to play in the game: Resistance or Enlightened.

I was visiting some friends a few hours away from my home base. Turned on my Ingress scanner and was surrounded by friendly blue skies. This control field took me 10 minutes to drive thru in a car going 45 miles per hour. Wow!
