Hi! I read your amazing post about Lan Wangji's way of speaking and realized I could get some explanation from you for something very basic. Lan brothers in series are called Shuāngbì which is 双壁 according to the subtitles from official episodes. Every translator tells me 壁 means wall. So why is it translated as jade? I found a homonym 碧 bì which can mean green jade? I checked the original novel, it uses 壁 [wall] character. I've almost 0 knowledge of mandarin, hence asking! Mind clarifying? Tx
hi! there is indeed a very simple explanation for your problem, which is that understandably, you’ve got the wrong character ahahaha
壁 | bi4 = wall
璧 | bi4 = jade annulus
if you look closely, you’ll notice that the lower radical for wall is 土 (earth) and the lower radical for jade annulus is 玉 (jade). when the characters are small on the screen, it’s hard to see! :)
so i suppose just to add slightly more information, shuangbi isn’t referring to generic “jade”, but specifically to the circular ring-like jade pendants that i’m sure you’ve seen before, but “twin jades” sounds much better than “twin jade annuli” XD

I'd guess it's probably stored as a cookie though? So if you're reading multiple chapters in a row each one won't count, but (at least if you aren't logged in) if you have your browser set up to clear cookies, read some one day, and then a new chapter when it updates that'll probably get counted as a new hit?
Yeah, that’s what I’d assumed initially! But IIRC, they actually did a lot of paying attention to logins and/or IPs instead... which still doesn’t fully deduplicate hits, but catches more.
