There is a concept that I love to work with when I write fanfictions and/or play with the idea of cursed lovers in a similar situation Meliodas and Elizabeth have, and I feel like that detail might add just a little another layer to the story (and their trauma).

In the case of Elizabeth and Meliodas, it would take the form of a natural way to break the curse. When I say natural, I mean not by using offensive magic against the curses, like they did in the series. Usually, it takes the form of a task, something to bring to the god you've pissed off, a set of actions to earn forgiveness or something like this.

But I say, we make them suffer.

I like my stories and fanfictions salty.

And I don't care if I go against canon. I'm writing this. I'm captain here.

Elizabeth wasn't cursed to love Meliodas. It's a test her mother set out to break the curse. If she falls in love, the curse goes on. If she doesn't, it breaks.

Meliodas wasn't cursed to indefinitely love Elizabeth. It's a test his father set out to break the curse. If he stays in love, the curse goes on. If he falls out, the curse breaks.

The supreme deity probably thought that a different background would make her daughter "see sense," but Elizabeth keeps falling in love with Meliodas no matter what her life looked like before, because he's a lovable goof ball with too much love to give.

The Demon King probably thought that the pain her deaths brought him would eventually make him fall out of love because it would be the most effective way to make the pain stop. But Meliodas can't stop loving her. Even without his emotions, he loves her because the joy she brings to him is worth every bit of pain he feels because of the curse.

That would make their story so much more beautiful because not only would it strengthen their bond, but it would also make a perfect example of: "When you love someone, you're by their sides for the laughters, the 3 a.m panick attacks and the sobbing messes."

Bonus points if good/original representation of magic and/or minorities (queer, neurodivergent, dys, indigenous...).

Hello! I'm trying to create an OC for a project I'm in. In your opinion, how do you develop a good character, backstory, personality, etc.?

How do you expand upon the OCs you already have made in the past?

Make 'em flawed. Make 'em unlikeable a little bit. Make 'em awkward and impatient and react poorly in some situations. Give 'em fears and selfish wants and desires.

Make 'em human.*

*In the behavioral sense, not necessarily species-wise. I don't know what your project is, or what species your oc will be.

The stereotypically dreaded "Mary Sue" oc isn't generally disliked because it's an oc, it's usually disliked because the character doesn't fit in with the rest of the cast, or is too perfect. They're everyone's friend, the canon characters immediately trust and like them, (sometimes romantically), and they always do and say exactly the right thing. They're perfect fighters, perfect singers, perfect bakers, perfect snark banterers, perfect therapists, etc, etc.

Yes, you can give your oc some skills, you can have them become or be friends with canon characters, but it needs to be a good mix of good and bad. They have to feel real before your audience will accept them.

Okay, so they're good at fighting--why? This isn't a natural talent, this is something they worked toward. Why? Have a believable backstory for this ability to fight.

Okay, so they're wicked smart. What are they really interested in? You don't want a know-it-all character who's gonna "erm, actually" everyone because they're sooooo smart. Give 'em a focus in that intelligence. (And for the love of all things holy, make sure you're getting their information right. Do proper research and don't rely on AI answers.)

Okay, so they're super good at snarky banter. Does that mean they cover their true feelings and thoughts with it, and have a hard time opening up in any sincere way? Do they sometimes go too far with the snark and unintentionally hurt the other person's feelings?

It's okay for them to be good at something, but they also have to be bad at something, too. They make sinful cupcakes, but can't carry a tune in a bucket. They notice little details but miss the bigger picture. They can read a map like a pro but can't drive for shit. (They don't always have to counter each other like this, but it can be fun if they do.)

My oc Callie is good at projecting an image that she's got it all together and nothing phases her, but inside she's an anxious, insecure mess. Her backstory put her on this path, and she's resistant to change. It's a mask she shows the world, but when she's with someone she truly trusts, she lets it slip.

My other oc Scarlett is similar to Callie in that she shows the world a shield of confidence, and has the tongue of a diplomat, but she also has a temper and is more stubborn than what's good for her. She'll get herself into trouble because she's too damn stubborn to admit when she was wrong, especially with the canon character she grew up with. They butt heads and bicker like crazy, but underneath they truly care about each other and would die protecting them.

Both ocs can be cold and vicious when backed into a corner, or protecting those they care about.

What designing an oc boils down to is, don't make them perfect. Don't always have them say exactly the right thing, or have just the skills necessary to solve a problem. You want to insert this character as though they're part of the world you're playing in, and you can't do that if you're too focused on making them the most perfect oc who ever oced.

Make 'em nuanced. Make 'em react in real, believable ways to situations. When they interact with canon characters, don't change the canon character's personality to suit/compliment your oc.

Cripes, this got long. I had tossed around the idea of writing a book on how to create good ocs so maybe I'll just make a series of blog posts instead. I dunno. We'll see.

Anyway, I hope that answered some of your questions. It's hard for me to completely answer this, because in my case my ocs always start out as a little bit me, so they already come with a seed of a personality. They tend to change as I play with them, becoming their own person after a while. Just whatever feels right for them.

If you're struggling with breathing life into your OC's, try this funny yet stupidly simple trick/writeblr tag game I just came up with. I call it the 'Roast Your OCS and Make It Into a Title' tag game. 🤣

So, we've all heard of fictional character archetypes and stereotypes that are often present in fiction, right? We all know it's not good to have shallow, surface level characters that have no complexity or nuance to their personalities, because real life humans contain multitudes, contradictions, and are in general very complicated beings.

Throw all that shit out for this exercise and toss it into the trash! 🗑️ In this tag game, we're gonna be reducing all our OC's to the most basic, mundane, stereotypical/archetypal renditions of themselves and making it Fit Into a Title!

People are absolutely free to ask me whatever but I'm afraid I'm not one for oc ask games...

You'd think that I, the creator of the ocs, would know everything about my little guys, but no. They just kinda spawn in the corner of the room (my brain) and I need to get to know them, but not all of them are easy to approach.
