Duck daddy, I'm having an identity crisis! I am someone who, despite being generally awkward at life, can't handle awkward in media. I will literally cover my face or leave the room if a show is too awkward, although I seem to do better with Asian shows, possibly because there is more of a disconnect when it's not in my own language. But now I'm also liking high school setting! I've NEVER liked that before except in some manga! I thought Takara kun to Amagi kun was a one-off because they're so impossibly cute, but I just watched Kieta Hatsukoi and I found that unbearably precious too!!!!!! High school is like the DEFINITION of awkward, what is happening to me? I think now I'm just old so I see them as precious little babies flailing around at life, less relatable than college or adult awkward. I think you've said you prefer high school setting as well, what are the best ones?

These are shows that make me wince from embarrassment for the character. It took me a long time to get used to it in BL, even though it is a hallmark of origin yaoi somehow it's easier to take in print. It’s not just the uke either, in Cherry Magic the second couple gives the seme all the cringe.

Light On Me (2021) Viki - it’s Korea so the cringe it more awkward than it is frenetic, but on the basis of the dildo scene alone. Full review.

Takara & Amagi AKA Takara-kun and Amagi-kun AKA Takara-kun to Amagi-kun (2022) Gaga and Viki - Amagi is one of the best executions ever from Japan who specialize in this archetype, and I have more to say about this drama coming up in a full review. 

My Love Mix Up AKA Vanishing My First Love AKA Kieta Hatsukoi (2021) Viki - Aoki is a completely adorable absolute chaos bi disaster muffin of Japan’s First Order of the Frenetic Uke Brigade. We’d bow before the king but he climbed into a trash-bin with a banana 20 minutes ago. 

Mr Heart (2020) Viki - Korea’s version is always a little different, but pretty much this is their best effort at classic BL awkward uke cringe.

Make it Right (2016) YT - Fuse, one of Thailand’s best example of this archetype is a lot more subtle than what we get from Japan, but trust me he is the same kind of chaos monkey. 

Love Sick (2014) YouTube  - the OG of Thai BL and perhaps Noh is a bit more earnest and warm hearted than he is loopy, but wait tell you get him drunk. I think he still qualifies as a more subtle version. 

Great Men Academy (2019) grey - this is body swap and so maybe nto really BL, but Jamie’s portrayal of Love certainly fills this archetype. 

(Taiwan doesn’t love cringe outside of straight dude comedies and comic relief besties.)

Sonadowtober Day 16: Haunted

Sonic thought he was feeling nervousness, or maybe butterflies.

He was very wrong....

It was getting bad. It’d never been this bad before. And that was saying a lot, because Shadow had been living rent free in Sonic’s mind for a good long while apparently. But now that Amy had said something?

It was so much worse. The hybrid was everywhere. Always present in one way or another, in his thoughts, his dreams, his… heart?

He’d brushed Amy off when she’d brought it up. His thing with Shadow wasn’t like that. They were friends.

Kinda. Sorta. Sometimes.

It was... complicated.

But… the things she’d pointed out? They were things he hadn’t even realized he was doing. They’d just felt natural. Of course he wanted to spend as much of his free time as he could with Shadow. The guy was cool, even if he was ridiculously grumpy. He was the only person in the entire world who could keep up with him. He challenged him, actually pushed him to his limits. He kept him guessing. And not just physically. Shadow was cunning and really smart, though also gullible, which was--

Cute?

Sonic stopped mid-step and nearly fell on his face. His eyes went wide. Cute??

Oh Chaos, it was cute. Shadow was cute. Everything he did was cute. And not just cute…

Sonic felt his stomach twist as he came to a very sudden and shocking realization. Amy was right. He was into Shadow. Romantically into Shadow. And not even a little bit.

Was this feeling… love?

He took a deep breath to try and quell the butterflies that threatened to burst from his chest in the form of vomit. Around him the soft sounds of the forest at night echoed, familiar and euphonious and everything that would normally calm him on a midnight run, but… not tonight.

Thoughts of Shadow kept him awake, kept him from focusing on running, kept him from thinking straight, from thinking at all. Every waking moment was consumed by thoughts of someone he’d never consciously considered to be… his someone.

Why did he feel like this?? Why Shadow??

“You’re up late.”

Sonic wasn’t aware he could levitate, but apparently Shadow brought out the repressed ability. He clutched his chest, trying to catch the breath that had left him in surprise. “Shadow!”

The agent gave him an odd look and stepped from the shadows cast by celestial light. “You need to pay more attention to your surroundings. You make yourself an easy target.”

Sonic chuckled, a blush rising to his cheeks at the mere sight of his…. Oh Chaos, his crush? Was Shadow his crush? He felt another wave of nausea hit him and he bent over to catch himself on his knees as he fought the sensation.

“Are you well?”

Sonic peeked upwards and let out a short laugh. He meant to say he was fine, or something along the lines of being surprised Shadow cared, but that wasn’t what came out.

No. What came out was so much worse. Shadow stood there, an eyeridge raised in concern, looking like some sort of god with his arms crossed over his white chest fluff and body outlined in moonlight and Sonic was dumbfounded. He was beautiful. Too beautiful. Sonic’s mouth fell open in awe, and that was it. The perfect moment, the perfect opportunity for....

Him to throw up all over his own shoes.

He groaned, heaving as his stomach tried to escape his body. He didn’t even realize Shadow hadn’t fled, but instead was instantly at his side, a single white gloved hand rubbing the small of his back in soothing gentle circles while mumbling soft words of comfort.

Sonic wiped at his mouth with the back of his glove and struggled upright, face burning with embarrassment. Shadow took one look at him and pulled off a glove, pressing a dark hand to Sonic’s forehead faster than he could see.

“You’re burning up, hedgehog. What were you thinking coming out here like this?”

Sonic tried to catch his breath, absolutely mortified and feeling worse by the minute. A clammy dusting of sweat broke out across his fur. “Didn’t know,” he stammered.

Shadow shook his head angrily and grabbed Sonic’s arm. One flash of light, and a blink of an eye later, the two were in Sonic’s bedroom. The hybrid pushed him toward his bed. “You need rest.”

Sonic felt his mind wobble a bit in response to fatigue and fever, not fully thinking when his mouth opened next. “What I need is for you to go out with me.”

“What?”

Sonic could have kicked himself. Leave it to him to speak without any forethought whatsoever. It was too late now either way…. He cleared his throat. “Go out with me? Let me take you out to dinner? We could go to the Olive Garden!”

Shadow’s ears flicked back, unsure and silent.

Sonic kicked off his shoes and sat on the bed, blinking glassy emerald eyes at the one who’d been haunting him unknowingly for years. “Please?”

Crimson eyes narrowed, their owner waiting for some sort of punchline or joke, but… none came.

“Ok.”

“Really??”

“Yes.”

Sonic sighed and flopped back on his pillows, eyes immediately closing. “Meet you there? Saturday at 7?”

“You mean nineteen hundred hours?”

Sonic’s voice trailed off, already slipping into sleep. “S’alot of numbers, Shadow….”

The dark hedgehog shook his head, and ignored his racing heart to grab Sonic’s bathroom trash and push it alongside his bed. With a mere thought he darted downstairs to the hero’s kitchen and grabbed a glass of water before returning it to the cobalt male’s bedside. He set the drink on the single nightstand, easily within Sonic’s reach and paused for a moment more before stooping low and pressing a kiss against an overly warm blue forehead. “Until Saturday,” he whispered.

In a flash Shadow disappeared, leaving Sonic alone with happily haunted fever dreams all featuring the same person.

Now decidedly his person.
