“We’re people too! We’re people too! We’re people too!” The crowd chanted, the voices blurring together in a massive, unified roar. Cass didn’t take part in the chanting, but he cared. He was at the point in his young life where he cared about the cause, Mutants’ Rights, enough to participate in some but not all events. He showed up to the protest, donated his time and resources, but he didn’t chant or go door-to-door or sign petitions.
He believed that mutants could be more than just other people on the planet, they could be heroes. He believed this about himself, his powers- they gave him unique skill. That’s what drove him to the vigilante gig. That’s what underlined every punch he threw in the name of dark justice for all mutants.
Cass spotted another person in the crowd who wasn’t chanting. He inched nearer to them. “Hello,” he said politely, “You don’t know me, but, would you like to... take a break from the noise with me?” Sometimes crowds had this effect on Cass, they made him anxious. Usually Cass would disappear on his own, but something about this person made them seem more approachable.
