me carrying a stuffed animal around while being disabled is not "infantilizing disability"
I am an actually disabled person who carries a stuffed animal as comfort bc disability is hard
what's "infantilizing disability" is assuming that just bc I carry a stuffed animal I'm not capable of making decisions for myself. or that having a stuffed animal makes me a less serious, adult person than you are.
"why don't you just walk" my braces cause muscle atrophy and crutches do not
"why don't you just walk" wearing braces in the heat is barely tolerable
"why don't you just walk" because i'm in a rush and i'm twice as slow when walking unaided
"why don't you just walk" because crutches let me pass off my disability as a temporary injury, whereas unaided i am very obviously congenitally disabled and experience far more ableism
"why don't you just walk" because if i don't take breaks i will lose most of my existing function in both my legs
"why don't you just walk" because i'm going shopping/to a museum/catching a train and i cannot stand for more than 3 minutes without my legs giving way
"why don't you just walk" because i'm fucking tired
if youre considering using a mobility aid, youre probably thinking about getting a cane. even if it seems like youre issues arent bad enough, you should probably still consider other mobility aids. please look into the pros and cons of several different mobility aids, especially in conjunction with your specific disability/diagnosis/needs.
i got a cane at first because i thought my issues were "mild" and therefore i needed a "mild" mobility aid. but canes are moreso for stability than support. i damaged my wrist and worsened my scoliosis by deciding to use a cane without an educated opinion.
i now use forearm crutches primarily, a rollator for longer outings, and a wheelchair for worse days and longer events. dont make the same mistake as 16-year-old me. dont choose your mobility aid based on palatability, consider your needs and address your internalized ableism if need be.
The ignorance towards how crutches work in pretty much any article or page I can find, even ones from companies that are supposedly experts, pisses me off. "Open cuff" (forearm) and "closed cuff" (elbow) crutches are NOT the same thing and shouldn't be grouped together, even if they look similar. Forearm crutches are not "also known as" elbow crutches or vice versa. They aren't interchangable. They distribute weight through different parts of your arm, they affect your gait differently, they are DIFFERENT MOBILITY AIDS. If you need a forearm/open cuff crutch and you use an elbow/closed cuff crutch long term you WILL fuck up your wrists. Perhaps permanently. Making it confusing by acting like they're interchangeable makes it so hard to find which one you need and to find resources for anyone who uses them.
