You guys know how to travel in a car with your canes, right? You know where to put them so they don’t kill you in an accident? You’re not just holding them on your lap?
For the record they go under your feet or under the seat. That’s the safest place for them except the trunk. Pls don’t let your mobility aid kill you in a freak accident
I’ve been driving with my cane wrong the entire time 😃
If this post saves even just one (1) person from ending up with a broken jaw/face/windshield I will be happy tbh
Nobody deserves to have to deal with maxillofacial surgeons or worse…. auto glass repair shops
bio-essentialism was bad when it said that autism is an inherently masculine condition and it's still bad when people act like male autism vs. female autism is a strict binary rooted in how women are naturally better at having cutesy autism or whatever
Hey if you’re schizophrenic/psychotic I just want you to know that you’re a wonderful person and that you deserve so much better than the demonization, marginalization and stigmatization you face in this society.
Please consider reblogging this/other positivity posts for schizophrenic/psychotic people every once in a while. If you have more than 100 followers, odds are that a couple of them experiences psychosis and that they rarely see positivity posts for people with their symptoms.
I think everyone who calls themself cripplepunk should take a moment to listen to the voices of amputees and people who have spinal chord injuries. I so often see parapalegia and lower limb amputations specifically listed as like barely disabilities, people assume they cause minimal to no pain or impairment and that people with those conditions are endlessly supported. It's really not difficult to find content creators who have these disabilities who talk about them in great detail and learn about the real barriers they create. I recommend Para Tara for learning about parapalegia, Sarah Todd Hammer for information about paralysis affecting the upper limbs, and while she's not currently posting videos Footless Jo has some great videos about her below-the-knee leg amputation and living with phantom pain. Feel free to add more recommendations for resources, especially if you have experienced an SCI or amputation yourself. I personally don't have either so my recommendations are based on limited knowledge.
I really do want to shake the people who keep saying "those mean cripples are so gatekeepy" because hoo boy you are missing at least 5 years of constant harassment from people who do NOT want to be considered physically disabled but do want to be allowed to say slurs for physically disabled people.
Like, my friend had his suicide attempt broken down and "discussed" by some fuckass YouTuber like it was an episode of whatever Fandom is interested in today. Several big Tumblr blogs (vaspider mainly) told people he did it to specifically hurt them instead of because, you know, he was in a mental health crisis and continuing to get harassment nonstop for months on end.
Like. We are ""gatekeepy"" because these are the people at the gate, saying "let us in and be our friend or we'll hurt you."
(Also the gate is held by literally the flimsiest lock ever: "do you consider yourself physically disabled?")
Just FYI, it's still murder when disabled people die by medical neglect.
Read that again.
Annual reminder that our disability is not your halloween costume and yes that includes wheelchairs, prosthetics, crutches, canes and mobility aids as props, and also mimicking limb differences, limping, blindness, delayed speech, and yes even scars and burn make up or fake hearing aids or asylum costumes like straitjackets and stuff. Disabled people are not scary.
If you've ever told a person who's had to be bedbound for a period of time that you wish you could "just stay in bed", DO IT.
Stay in bed. For days. But don't get up if someone needs you to, or you get bored, or you get antsy. Don't do anything other than rest. Just lie in your bed, whether you need to get stuff done around the house or socialize or anything else "productive". You'll have to cancel on people, you'll disappoint them, they won't understand.
And if you're thinking, "well, i CAN'T just be in bed. There's stuff that has to be done - I have plans", maybe ask yourself why you assumed a disabled person doesn't have plans or things to do or desires.
“just don’t use your mobility aid for the job interview”
you do realise some of us need our aids to function, right?
if you need your mobility aid in order to do your job, an employer very much can go “wait a second, you didn’t need that when we interviewed you, what’s changed?”. I’m thinking here about the case study in crip spacetime (2024) of an employee who had a HR rep use a 3 minute youtube video of said employee doing a task to prove that they didn’t need workplace accommodations
if you need a mobility aid you will at some point need to reveal to your employer that you are disabled and you still have to worry about the repercussions of that. like. that’s objectively true. hello.
avoiding disability discrimination is not a matter of Just Act Abled At All Times. lol. but thanks for the tip I guess
““The mannerisms that help define gender - the way in which people walk, swing their hips, gesture with their hands, move their mouths and eyes when they talk, take up space - are all based upon how non disabled people move…The construct of gender depends not only upon the male body and female body, but also on the non disabled body.””
— Eli Clare, Exile and Pride: Disability, Queerness, and Liberation
“I no longer have a gender. Rather, I have a wheelchair.”
—Christina Crosby, A Body, Undone.
hey so if you have secret prejudiced thoughts about an oppressed group. and you feel guilty about those thoughts. to be honest it isn’t very swagilicious when you go out of your way to turn a member of that oppressed group into your own personal confessional booth. I don’t need to know that you were secretly ableist about your wheelchair using coworker, actually. I don’t need to know that you used to hate trans people. you don’t need to make that my problem please
people in the notes keep saying “don’t do this to an internet stranger” and that’s true. but I need to be clear that I wrote this post after a close(ish) friend confessed her secret ableisms to my face. so also don’t go out into the offline world and do this either
It will never cease to irk me when people look at devices and tools made for disability and call it a "scam" just because it doesn't work for them.
Of course, kinesiology tape doesn't work on you if you don't have connective tissue or soft tissue damage. Your body doesn't need help holding itself together. Mines does.
"Posture braces are a scam, you should just exercise more." Okay, what if you can't? What if no matter how much you exercise, your body will always need extra support.
"Foam rollers don't actually do anything, just do exercise." Again, see the above.
"Neck traction devices? Pft, stop being lazy and exercise." Again. See. The. Above. Also, speaking as someone with a severe neck injury, sometimes you need those devices to exercise. And yes, sometimes moving half an inch is considered exercise depending on the nature of your injury and limitations. My current goal in physical therapy is to hold my neck up on my own for longer than ten seconds while lying on my back. It's taken me a year of intensive work to manage it. The traction devices have been a part of this, as recommended by my physical therapist.
"Balance boards, omg what are you, a baby who can't walk?" IN SOME CASES, FUCKING YES.
Like I get it, I get it. You've seen the infomercials and they look goofy, or you just plain cannot think of a situation where you personally might ever need some sort of assistance with your body. But good news! Disability is the only minority group you can become a part of at any moment through sheer bad luck, age, illness or a genetic ticking time bomb hiding in your DNA. May the odds be ever in your favor, and if not, may you encounter kinder people than yourself.
Caring about trauma survivors means caring about the ones who developed disorders that aren't palatable to you.
You're not a mental health advocate if you demonize any specific disorders bc you decided they're the "bad" ones.
I don't believe in the idea that a disorder makes someone a bad person, or beyond help, or not worthy of respect. Fix your heart.
Fuck it, shout out to people who take longer to do things or have to do stuff slower than the average person.
Shout out to people who need extra time on tests.
Shout out to people who take longer to internalize information.
Shout out to people who take longer to talk.
Shout out to people who walk slowly, or take longer to get from one place to another.
Shout out to people who take longer to form connections with others.
Shout out to people who write slowly.
Shout out to people who read slowly.
Shout out to people who need extra time to rest between activities.
Shout out to people who can only do so much in a day.
Shout out to people with low dexterity that makes them do things slower.
Shout out to people who in some way have been deemed “slow”.
I see you, I hear you, and I will gladly wait for you if you want me to. I see effort you put in. I’m sorry that you have to be rushed so much. I hope that you can have the time you need, and that you get a support system that understands. You deserve to be able to exist at your pace.
And to the rest of yall, please for the love of fuck be patient. We are doing our best. We are going as fast as we can.
trying to get disability benefits is less like applying for aid and more like being put on trial for a crime you didn't commit
