Angry, possessive girl with massive abandonment issues loves girl whose instinct is to run away because of trauma from her angry, possessive ex? That's not romantic, that's toxic like nerve gas. These two are the living embodiment of each other's triggers.

That said, in fanon I've seen the bees written very well! They can be a good couple, but they need to actually address and work through the ways they hurt each other, and instead of that, in the show CRWBY goes the exact opposite direction, intensifying the toxic traits and calling it sweet and romantic and lovey.

Ya know what? I was gonna leave my little joke about the weapon scene as a little joke but I actually do want to share me feelings about that scene and I have a few so listen up.

Whitley is a child and victim of abuse first and foremost. His ‘bad’ behavior was a trauma response. It is not uncommon for people to try to appease abusers. It was a way to make pain pause for a moment and part of that pause meant hurting Weiss in the process. But ya know what else hurt Weiss? Winter leaving which was also a trauma response. Whitley was a part of the pain Weiss felt in her abusive home but he was also surviving. Winter was a part of the pain but she was also surviving. Whitley did what he had to do he tried to thrive where there was no room.

Weiss is older than him and has had the chance to learn about healthy bonds and love. Her coming back and putting the weapon in his face was no alright. She could see that she had been hurt by her family but didn’t comprehend that Whitley was also a victim. She needed to be better is the bottom line. I am not saying Weiss is bad as a character but she made a mistake. Weiss struggles so much with her family and identity yet in that moment she was her fathers daughter using her power to make someone listen out of fear.

Weiss was a part of whitleys suffering in that moment. When he mocked her Whitley was a part of weiss suffering. They are siblings they are connected they hurt and heal each other. That dynamic is delicate.

Now the writers did something beautiful but goddamn it they did it by accident. What they did was show that sometimes becoming the abuser can feel like overcoming your abuse. The showed that when you had no power you then sometimes use the power you get to exact revenge. But Weiss was able to turn around and hug her brother, she left him and came back she is growing an learning. It was not a ‘girl boss’ moment it was a moment of pain and revenge. She thought she was claiming her autonomy but she was hurting her brother.

This is coming from someone who has deep rooted feeling about weiss as Whitley since I grew up in an abusive home and my brother reacted the way Whitley did. I have grown to the point I know my brother should not be blamed for his role in what happened to anyone else in that household. When you are abused and you take steps to survive then you are STILL a victim. Survival tactics don’t stop your abuse. Weiss owes her brother a GODDAMN apology. She needs to say what she did wrong she needs to own it. Whitley is a victim and he is her brother, she should be able to find her compassion for him or maybe Weiss isn’t the hero I thought she was.

Hi, so I never got a part one of this, but I’m going to answer this anyway and tbh, I feel like you don’t have to send me a part one if you’re just going to argue that there isn’t anything wrong with the way the RWBY writers wrote the WF arc. I hate to go off on you, Anon, but tbh, I’m a bit at the end of my rope on this subject.

Please stop. Telling people what the White Fang was written to be. To defend the writers who wrote them that way. I can’t stress this enough, ask yourself why things were written the way they were and listen to people of color who say the writers severely mishandled an allegory to the racism they face. I don’t care if you saw the arc as fine, listen to people of color who have real problems with these narratives and believe them. You’re comparing the only civil rights group in the whole fucking show to fucking N*zis and you don’t get why maybe the writers wrote it that way because of their own internalized bias or white comfort?

“The White Fang was a terrorist group, so Blake fighting them isn’t wrong,” maybe ask why the only Pro-Faunus rights group was written to be an extremely violent terrorist group that wants to destroy humans (who are in the place of white people) who no one in their right mind would agree with. The only Pro Faunus rights group, the only group fighting for the rights of the Faunus, the only group standing up against literal slavery, is written to be so extreme that only the cruelest of the cruel would join up. That’s bad. That’s a badly handled allegory to racism. There’s no ‘what was Blake supposed to do’ in this conversation, there’s ‘Why did the writers make an ‘allegory of racism that people of color face’ and make it about stopping violent people of color who are too angry?’ There’s no ‘Fighting the White Fang isn’t bad, they were trying to kill innocents,’ there’s ‘why does this entire thing feel like anti Black Lives Matter propaganda disguised as a feel good narrative? Why is the message ‘people of color need to stop being violent towards each other and stand up for white people if they want equality?’

The world of RWBY isn’t real, Adam doesn’t exist, the RWBY writers weren’t just penning a story that was already written that they... Heard from God or something, they made these writing choices! They made this up themselves! Adam wouldn’t be a violent murderous abuser if the writers didn’t make him that way. The White Fang wouldn’t be trying to murder all humans if the writers didn’t write it that way. Instead of saying ‘idk why these people are mad that violent murderer’s are presented as violent murderer’s’ the real question is ‘why did the writers go out of their way to write the allegory in such a harmful way?’ They literally are pushing the same sort of narratives that are hurtful to people of color. “I’m all for equal rights, but I can’t get behind a movement that involves breaking property” is literally something I’ve heard in real life. “People of color want to lecture us, but they’re hurting themselves,” is something I’ve heard in real life. “My family didn’t deserve to have our business hurt by these violent extremists.”

Whether the writers meant to or not, they wrote a narrative that perpetrates harmful stereotypes and feeds harmful viewpoints. Maybe this wouldn’t be a problem if the Faunus weren’t meant to be an allegory to people of color. You’re right, Adam needed to be taken out in the show, the White Fang needed to be taken out in the show. But ask why they were written that way, what white comfort or bias or internalized racism might’ve leaked into even well intentioned writings, whether or not this helps or hurts people of color in the long run.

But most importantly, listen to people of color and believe them about the arc and the allegory that was supposedly written for them, whether or not you realized it yourself, whether or not you see the problem, whether or not you agree. I don’t care if you don’t agree with me and don’t believe me, I’m not a person of color, I’m just trying to speak about these issues. But it’s not hard to find opinions of people of color on this show and their Faunus arcs and plotlines. Look into it, stop trying to invalidate, and leave me alone about it.

It’s now unpopular to like RWBY.

What the fuck? Literally the only non-negative RWBY thing I can go to is reactions. And even some of those are filled with whining, people angry they’re not getting answers NOW, and, wait for it...not getting their ships. MurderOfBirds is the only truly good soul I feel like I can sit down and genuinely enjoy the show with. Not actually sit down, I’m not cool enough to know the guy, but watch the show with him via reaction. If I didn’t love the story, the characters, the lore and everything else so much the toxic fanbase would have pushed me away a super long time ago. CRWBY, thanks for all you do. Volume Eight was great.

N… no, that's how you get things like multiple dei ex machina within several episodes of each other, sudden inexplicable nuke canes that only affect enemies, genies who ignore their own rules literally within minutes of explaining them, etc.

You shouldn't care about your story being surprising. At all. A clown appearing out of nowhere riding a unicorn and solving the problems with lasers that turn said problems into cupcakes that instantly make anyone who eats them your bestie is surprising; that doesn't mean it's a good idea. You should care about your story being good, that's it.

I think people like to forget even more so the people defending rwby that the show never was meant to be revolutionary or full with rep or even that deep. It was a passion project with fun and cool concepts. Its a what if red riding hood would be a badass but naive monster hunter. And sure stories like this can still have a lot of depth but we all saw the first seasons and knew its gonna be more on the cool and fun site. And thats okey! Stories dont need to be revolutionary or have a lot of depth to be enjoyable. But some fans act like its the gold of storytelling and foreshadowing when its not and never will be. Again thats okey! Just wish the rwby stans would pop a few chill pills before watching or going on tumblr to write paraghraphs about a youtube cartoon.

Hey anon! I agree completely, in the early volumes of RWBY we were sold a fighting anime set in a school with flashy fights and cool weapons and semblances where Corgi's get fired out of a canon and live to tell the tale. I do not say this to bash the show at all! There is nothing wrong with shows like this, back then when that was the show, I loved it. The fights where fun and exciting to watch, I was eager to see the new weapons and semblances of characters we hadn't seen yet. It was a blast and we need shows like that honestly. Lighter shows that are fun and an escape from the hellscape we find ourselves in right now. Like another favorite show of mine is Phineas and Ferb. It's fun its silly its quirky it has memorable and loveable characters and it never goes that deep at all in any of its themes or stories but I adore it because of that. It's light its fun and safe content to consume.

I get wanting a show to be deeper then it really is. Going back to my Phineas and Ferb example, the show sprinkles in these hints that the main antagonist's brother who is beloved by everyone at his core is a bad and almost cruel person. We get these nuggets and I keep hoping the show will delve into more and go into their childhoods and they never do and that's okay because the show was never supposed to be about those kinds of topics, its about the adventures of two kids trying to make the most of their summer vacation and having fantastic adventures with their friends with a side plot about their pet platypus who is a secret agent. It's a silly show and their is nothing wrong with that. RWBY could have been a fantastic slice of life show about battling the monster of the week and I would have adored it. But the show wanted to try and be more then the writers knew how to handle.

RWBY is not the gold standard for storytelling, hell its not even the bronze standard. It's got a lot of flaws and plot holes and retcons and unretcons? Undoing of retcons? I don't even know the proper terminology for this but it is retcons of retcons and back to the original and it is insane trying to keep up with it all. But that is okay. You do not need to justify enjoying a show, just as you do not need to justify not liking a show or why you chose to criticize its flaws. But trying to pretend RWBY is something its not is only setting people up for disappointment. If you promise a deep and emotional story with top tier story telling and they get RWBY people are going to be upset and frustrated.

I remember when a college friend told me about Ruby and she showed me all the trailers and I was so excited because it looked so fun. She told me I was getting a fun fighting show based off of fairytale characters and I was down for that. It sounded fun and exciting and I didn't care the animation was....flawed lolz. I didn't care about that, I was just here for the fun ride. And hell the show deciding to try and switch gears and try to tackle heavier topics is also fine! Shows can successfully make that kind of transition, but RWBY's writers simply where not prepared to be able to tackle these topics. They weren't ready to do the necessary research and have the necessary conversations to do so properly and respectfully. That really at the end of the day is the problem. A lack of willingness to do the work to try and become the show RWBY and its fans try to pretend it is now. I just wish the fans would accept that the writers just didn't have the tools needed to write the story they where trying to.
