What's Stopping The Man with the Yellow Hat?

you read the title. what's stopping theodore "ted" shackleford from just throwing george on the street, and then speeding away?

george is an annoyance to him, right?

throughout his life, ted has always been portrayed as someone extremely stressed and worryful. it is also quite evident when stuff gets invovled in his work.

lets talk about his yellow hat now. he has had it since he was a child and it means so much to him. he gets really upset when anything bad happens to it. this could indicate that it is hard for ted to part with certain stuff.

there is no reason to not think the man in the yellow hat suffers from depression.

while george might be quite an annoyance to him, he's one of the first real friends he has ever had. being one of the first real friends he has ever had has made it hard for ted to part with george.

george and ted share a familial bond, with george being his son. the conflicts george has caused is quite similar to the ones a young child might cause.

and ted, being his father, will love him unconditionally either way.

TL;DR: Ted would be a total wreck if he just shoved his best friend AND son out of his life like that.

Cinder by Marissa Meyer (The Lunar Chronicles)

Rating: 4.5 Stars.

Genre: YA, Sci-Fi, Fantasy

In this sci-fi fantasy retelling of the classic Cinderella, a deadly plague sweeps through Earth and cyborgs live among humans as second class citizens. Cinder is a gifted mechanic who longs to be free, but as a cyborg she is her wicked stepmother’s property. After she meets Prince Kai, the son of the ailing Emperor, Cinder finds herself caught in an intergalactic struggle and must fight to uncover the truth about the past in order to save their future.

Let me start this off my saying that I have loved The Lunar Chronicles since I was 14 and read them in my school’s library, however, until recently I didn’t actually own any of the books. COVID-19 gave me the perfect opportunity to buy them and re-read them.

The characters in this are amazing! Cinder as the heroine is incredibly relatable. Under the ownership of her stepmother Cinder is trapped, treated poorly, abused and she is desperate to escape. She is tragic, but stong; fiercely independant, but scared. In sort, she make the perfect reluctant heroine.

Prince Kai is a fresh take on the dreamy Prince Charming. He is lovable and charismatic, but at the same time struggling under the weight of all the pressure. This poor boy cares so much about everyone else, there’s very little left to care about himself.

And Iko! Cinder’s android bestfriend is without a doubt one of my favourite characters in the entire series. Her snarky and sarcastic wit is the perfect comic relief.

The final main character is Queen Levana, the evil ruler of Luna (the colony that inhabits the moon). She’s a character that’s so easy to hate. She’s manipulative and evil. While this means she works as a typical fairytale villain, she is lacking in depth. There’s nothing that makes her human, but perhaps that’s the point.

While not to some people’s liking, I find the world building in Cinder to be impressive. Meyer presents a post-post-apocalyptic world as fact. The explaination of what happened to transform our world into theirs is simple. There was a massive war, civilisations were wiped out, they rebuilt. The little details in the exposition are what really makes this book excellent - small details about Cinder: she can’t cry, or blush.

The plot is fast-paced and packed with just enough action to make it interesting, but not so much that it becomes unrealistic or a gore-fest.

My only issue with this book is that for a story set in China, it is infused with very little Asian culture - to the point where it could have been set anywhere in the world.

TL;DR Marissa Meyer is an excellent writer and this book is amazing.
