My Pampering Night Time Routine
Always oil cleanse first! No matter what I’m using after, I always make sure I use an oil cleanser to create a clean slate to work off of.
Apply Lush Catastrophe Cosmetic face mask.
Hop in the shower and do a quick wash (Using up the last of my Lush Rose Jam 💔 ). Apply OGX Conditioner (probably Kukui Nut) and let sit. Rinse off Lush face mask and follow with Fresh Soy Face Cleanse.
Exit the shower and get a bath running. Apply a well-soaked sheet mask (Prelab Aqua Energy 💖 ).
Get into the bath and dissolve whatever Lush bath product I’m going to use (Been loving the bath oils lately).
Relax and watch Youtube videos (There may or may not be wine involved in all of this 😁 ) Rinse out hair conditioner in bath water before I get out. Never get bath water on your face.
Get out of the bath and put some hair product in. I’m using up my OGX Coconut Curls Styling Milk. I’ll usually pull my hair back in a headband until I go to bed.
I’d then complete my skin care routine; I would usually go onto the moisturizing phase of my routine after a sheet mask.
Once I’m mostly dry, I apply body moisturizer. This time of year, I’d usually apply a lighter lotion, such as the Hempz Age Defying Lotion. I’d follow up with the Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse, because that scent is TO DIE FOR. 😍😍😍
Get into my pajamas and chill out! Watch TV, do my nails, read, etc. etc. Until I’m ready to sleep.
Take my meds and brush my teeth. A little Glossier Coconut Balm Dot Com on the lips and L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream when I’m about to go to bed. So many good fragrances to lull me to sleep!

I’ve been cleaning out my bathroom cabinets and I found traces of Good Intentions that I never followed through with. For example, it looked like at one time I really meant to get on the nighttime face (or else I picked up the wrong facewash and never got around to returning it, which sounds more likely) routine. SO! Instead of letting it sit under the sink for who knows how long again, I’m actually going to make a concentrated effort to do something. While I’m not seeing a ton of fine lines and wrinkles (thank you, genetics!), I’m not getting any younger and I’d like everyone to keep thinking that I’m a few years younger than I actually am.
Here’s what I’ve been doing for the past week, and reactions my skin’s been giving me.
I’m taking some of these reactions with a grain of salt, mostly because I’m doing some hormonal breakouts around this time of the month anyway.
Daytime:
Face wash: Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser
Skin reaction: None. This has been my go-to cleanser for the longest time because it doesn’t irritate my skin like some of the other OTC cleansers have. When I was taking birth control pills, I started getting a red, almost like rosacea type rash over my cheeks and that “mask of pregnancy” hyperpigmentation. That, coupled with astronomical weight gain/trouble losing said weight gain made me quit taking them. A year later and I’ve gotten rid of most of the hyperpigmentation, but the redness and dry skin on just the tops of my cheeks has lingered. I don’t know if this is because of the BCP or not, but I do know that it started shortly after starting them and I don’t remember doing anything different. ANYWAY, this cleanser is very soothing and calms down any breakouts relatively quickly for me. I’ll use it in the shower in the mornings and again in the evenings.
Toner: Thayer’s Alcohol-Free Witch Hazel and Aloe Vera toner
Skin reaction: None. I’ll pat this on after getting out of the shower and it makes my skin feel softer. I’ve also noticed that this calms the red spots, not to the point where they go away completely during the day, but where they’re less noticeable.
Sunblock: CeraVe SPF 50 Sun Lotion
Skin reaction: slightly more breakouts, especially around the corners of my nose. I’ll admit that I haven’t used sunblock on a regular basis, so I think this is more a new product reaction. It does leave a faint white film if you don’t rub it in or put it on too thickly though, so you have to make sure you get it all rubbed in.
Moisturizer: EO Coconut Oil and Lemon Lotion
Skin reaction: None. What I like about this (aside from the HUGE bottle it comes in) is that it’s thin enough to use as a facial moisturizer, yet you can build up the coverage and use it for your entire body. In the wintertime I like to slather it on dry patches at night and it really helped to clear up painful cracked skin. I tried a few other lotions when my eyelids decided to flake and crack this past winter (wtf, skin?) and nothing helped heal them better than this stuff. It comes in several different scents, but I love the lemon and coconut for a morning pick-me-up.
Vitamin Help: Nature’s Bounty Hair, Skin and Nails gummies
Skin reaction: too early to tell. I had a coupon for these, so I thought what the hell. You take two gummies daily, and I like the strawberry flavor. They have Vitamin E and C, plus Biotin, and there’s 120 gummies in the container, so we’ll see what happens once the 60 days are up.
Nighttime:
Cleanser: Clean & Clear Night Relaxing Deep Clean Wash
Skin reaction: None. If anything, the red spots are less noticeable after using this one than they are after using Cetaphil. This was the one under the cabinet, so I’ve only been using it for a week, but I like the scent and it makes my face feel really clean. I’ll use it with the Clarisonic cleanser.
On the Clarisonic: I think I need to use this one sparingly, since the “purging phase” that everyone seems to say they go through feels a lot more like over-exfoliation instead of bringing all the “deeply imbedded dirt and oils” to the surface. Yes, my face feels incredibly smooth after using this, but even with the sensitive skin brush head, keeping the brush on the problem areas for a small amount of time and using very little pressure, my cheeks look like someone has taken a brillo pad to them. My nose, forehead and chin, on the other hand, feel great and there’s no redness to be seen there. I’m going to try using it once a day every other day instead of twice a day every other day to see if that makes any difference.
Toner: Thayer’s Alcohol-Free Witch Hazel and Aloe Vera toner
Oil/Serum: Boscia Tsubaki Beauty Oil
Skin reaction: None. I got this at the Sephora clerk’s suggestion and I’m SO GLAD that I did. It's pricey ($46) but a little goes a long way. I’ll put 4-5 drops in my palm and pat it over my face. It takes a little while to sink in, so I’ll brush my teeth while it’s doing its thing. Some people online have said that they don’t like the smell, but I think that the lightly floral scent goes well with the face wash scent and it does fade quickly. The day after I started using this, I noticed that the dry patches on my cheeks were softer and there wasn’t much flaking during the day. I don’t know how much adding this made a difference or if it’s the sunblock lotion/moisturizer in the mornings, but I felt like my skin had a softer, hydrated texture to it upon first waking up.
Moisturizer: First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Hydra-Firm Sleeping Cream
Skin reaction: None. I got this sample size as a points reward after buying the Clarisonic at Sephora. Since it’s a sample size, I’ve only been using smaller than a pea size portions and smoothing it mostly over the tops of my cheeks, forehead, and chin. I’ve seen reviews that say that their pores got really clogged, which makes me leery about getting the full-size and using more product. So far though, I haven’t had any reaction to it, and layering it over the Beauty Oil seems to help with the extra moisture. I may switch over to the Boscia sleep mask just because I’m really pleased with how well the oil from the same brand is doing, but that’s another paycheck.
The best thing is that Izzy doesn’t try to eat it. I had to stop using Oil of Olay because I woke up to her licking my face.
But anyway, there you have it. After breaking it down and noting that the majority of these products haven't broken me out, I really think that the Clarisonic is the culprit for the tomato face. I’m really hoping that knocking the use down to two or three times a week will help, because if not, I’m going to kick myself for wasting the money. They have a delicate skin brush head that feels a little softer than the sensitive skin one, so if anything, I’ll switch out brush heads to see if that helps.
