Here's a classic card that any long-time fan would easily recognize: "De-Magic"! To them, it's a symbol of days gone by, a card that's terribly limited by modern standards (it doesn't even negate the card it affects!). But there's more going on with this one than you might expect.

There's a lot to cover with this card, particularly its intended effect and the mechanics behind it. But first, let's start with its name.

You might look at my name for this card, compare it with Konami's name for this card, and think that all I did was swap out a 'spell' for a 'magic'. But the truth is, I really dove deep into the technicalities for this one. I really struggled to find out what I should call this card. 「魔法解除」was a hard name for me to get a handle on!

解除 has a lot of possible meanings. My first idea for this card's name was "Magic Dissolution", a phrasing that Viz's translators stated they preferred in the end section of "Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelist" volume 4. (They also considered "Magic Liquidation" before settling on "Undo Magic" in the story itself.)

Looking over other meanings for the words on jisho.org, it seemed there were many different ways to go. "Magic Cancellation" was an easy choice. "Magic Rescission" was a fun, if inaccurate, rendering. Then I saw that one of the possible meanings here was 'release', as in 'releasing a lock'.

Suddenly its illustration made a lot more sense! It's possible that this card's name was meant to be a sort of pun, likening its ability to release something from a magical effect with the act of releasing a lock!

The trouble was, how would I retain that pun? "Release Magic" doesn't really get that same sentiment across. "Magic Unlocking" isn't a pun. I could call it "Un-Magic", as in unlock, but that doesn't really do it either. This is one case where I like Konami international's rendering; "De-Spell" still doesn't take into account the 'unlock' aspect, but it does retain the pun aspect even if that pun is now disconnected from the image.

The other thing is, whatever I chose here, I'd want it to reflect 「融合解除」, "De-Fusion", which was a card with an intentionally similar name. And a lot of choices for this here just didn't line up well as possibilities for "De-Fusion". In the end, I chose to prioritize the fact that these two names are similar, so I called this "De-Magic" so that it would match "De-Fusion". I regret that I wasn't able to retain the 'unlock' pun, but that's just how things go sometimes.

Aside from that, Takahashi seems to have had trouble with this card in the colorized version of the manga. Here are examples of what it looked like there:

The top-left image is how it looked in its first appearances in the Duelist Kingdom and Battle City arcs, when it was used by Mei the Elder in the labyrinth duel and by Dark Yugi in his duel against Pandora the Conjurer. The top-right image is how it looked when Yugi used it in the duel where Jonouchi was brainwashed by Malik, and the bottom image is how it was colored when Rishid used it against Jonouchi in the Battle City quarterfinals.

The first one matches Konami's version pretty closely. The second one is easy to explain as an unfinished version of the first image. The last one, though, is very different. The lock seems to be yellow-ish rather than gold, and the details aren't colored in at all. The smoke is white, and the background is a sort of lighter blue.

What does this mean? Is this perhaps the original intended colors for "De-Magic"? Was Takahashi just having fun with the palette he chose for this chapter? Or did he mess up and forget what he'd done in the previous color volumes? Unfortunately, we'll never know what the story behind this is.

Now, let's get into how this card's effect is actually supposed to work. It utilizes a wholly unique mechanic that doesn't appear in Konami's game! Full details under the jump.

First, let's establish what the card does. The on-card text states: 「敵から受けたすべての魔法効力を打ち消す」. I understand this means something like: "Negates all magical effects inflicted on you by your enemy".

Seems pretty wide-ranging. Of course, I judge a card's effect based on how it's actually shown to work on-panel.

In chapter 96, Mei the Elder controls a "Wind Demon God: Hyuga" affected by Dark Yugi's Trap Card "Binding Hexagram Curse" (Konami's "Spellbinding Circle"), activated last turn. On his turn, he plays "De-Magic" to negate "Binding Hexagram Curse". Notably, Dark Yugi has an active Magic Card, "Magical Silk Hats", active before and after "De-Magic" is played. So here, "De-Magic" only affects a single card, "Binding Hexagram Curse". (Some of you will notice something unusual about this interaction- I'll get to that after I finish listing "De-Magic"'s usages in a sec.)

In chapter 162, the Rare Hunter Pandora activates the Magic Card "Thousand Knives" in an attempt to destroy Dark Yugi's "Black Magician". In response, Dark Yugi activates his set "De-Magic" to negate Pandora's "Thousand Knives". Once again, "De-Magic" affects only a single card.

In chapter 197, Jonouchi activates the Magic Card "Angel's Die" and the Trap Card "Demon's Die" simultaneously. In response, Yugi activates his set "De-Magic" to negate Jonouchi's "Angel's Die".

In chapter 212, Jonouchi attempts to activate his set Magic Card "Scapegoat"; but Rishid plays "De-Magic" to negate it.

So it's pretty clear. Despite what the text says, "De-Magic" can only affect one card when it's used. It can also either affect a card already in play (like "Binding Hexagram Curse") or a card that was just activated after being set (as in most other cases).

Now, you'll notice that "De-Magic" is able to negate "Binding Hexagram Curse"/"Spellbinding Circle", a Trap Card. Why is this?

Here's where that manga-exclusive mechanic comes into play. In the manga, some non-Monster Cards are considered to have 'magical effects'. Whenever a card effect is being negated in the early manga, it's likely that what's actually being negated is that card's magical effect.

Panels and excerpts from chapters 96 and 128. In these specific cases, Viz's translators retained the term 'magical effect'; in other cases, like chapter 104, the term was omitted.

The thing is, unlike some other mechanics seen in Duelist Kingdom, magical effects still matter well into the Battle City arc. They get mentioned several more times, particularly in regards to the god cards:

Here, the phrasing is a little muddled, but the intent is clear. Notice that Malik is referring to "Binding Hexagram Curse" as having a 'magic effect' that only lasts for one turn against his god card. This is part of where the commonly-held idea that 'A Magic Card can only last for one turn against a god card, and a Trap Card can't affect a god card at all' comes from, but right away we see that Malik doesn't actually say Magic Card here (in fact, if he did the translators would have rendered it as 'Spell Card').

No; in this specific instance, Malik is referring to a card's magical effect...and he's referring to it specifically in the context of the Trap Card "Binding Hexagram Curse" having a magical effect. Which is perfectly consistent with Mei the Elder's use of "De-Magic" to negate Dark Yugi's "Binding Hexagram Curse", all the way back in chapter 96.

But how do we know that this isn't just a special property of specifically "Binding Hexagram Curse"? Well, in chapter 236, Kaiba talks a little about the known abilities of god cards. He states:

Here, that same commonly-held idea that 'Magic Cards can only affect a god card for 1 turn' is stated outright...but it doesn't say Trap Cards can't affect a god card. Instead, the the idea is that some Trap Cards can affect a god card, though it doesn't specify how. The panel art implies that "Holy Barrier: Mirror Force" can't destroy a god card...but because of chapter 174 we know of a Trap Card that can affect a god! The difference lies in the fact that "Binding Hexagram Curse", and per Kaiba some other Trap Cards, have magical effects, and those other Trap Cards don't.

The last we read of magical effects is during Dark Yugi and Kaiba's semifinals duel.

Here, Kaiba plays "Dragon's Ruler: Lord of Dragons", a card whose on-panel text in the Japanese version only says only something like "A magician who has the power to control Dragon-types". Kaiba's dialogue is more illuminating; he says this makes it 'immune to magic'. A vague statement, but Dark Yugi clears things up a little: before this, he was planning to use his "Black Magician" to attack Kaiba's "Blue-Eyes White Dragon", aided by his set Magic Card "Magic Spellbook", a card that boosts "Black Magician"'s ATK by 500 points, and his set Trap Card "Binding Hexagram Curse", which lowers a monster's ATK by 700 and makes them unable to attack or switch their battle position. Now, he says, he can't do that.

Logically, what Kaiba's dragon support monster is doing is stopping him from using "Binding Hexagram Curse", because it can't stop him from using "Magic Spellbook". Once again, a link between Trap Cards and magic is established.

So, to recap: some non-Monster Cards have a property called 'magical effects'. It's likely that, by virtue of being, well, magic, all Magic Cards have the magical effect property. In contrast, not all Trap Cards have magical effects. I speculate that the only Trap Cards that have magical effects are Trap Cards that have some kind of magic theme to them through their name or illustration; but not enough information is given in the manga to confirm that.

No other types of cards seen in the manga- Equip Cards, Virus Cards, Illusion Cards, or Slot Machine Power Units (yup, that's a real thing in the manga- read the Jonouchi vs Bandit Keith duel to learn about those) are said to have magical effects in any way, though Virus Cards are said to be unable to affect a god card and the other types (with the possible exception of Illusion Cards) don't have much in the way of magic theming.

And to bring it all back!...

...THAT'S why this version of "De-Magic" is able to affect some kinds of Trap Cards!
